From a very early stage, the Festival de Cannes has placed an emphasis on its Marché du Film as a way of promoting the dual cultural and economic nature of cinema, and in 2019, the Marché du Film celebrated its 50th anniversary! Today, boasting in excess of 12,500 participants, it remains the world’s leading market, serving to add dynamism to the global film industry. It forms an integral part of the Festival in the sense that it also facilitates networking and provides professionals with the services and tools they need in order to exchange information, hold negotiations and uncover new opportunities.

I don't know how this is handled -- are there presentations in case there are questions? Or are the bidders solicited before the festival and provided all the information. The outfit coordinating this is WME Independent ( a division of WME, Hugh's agency). Have they already received advance bids, hence the label " Hot" Cannes Festival offering?

I was lucky to have been in Cannes during festival week - and when we looked for a coffee shop at the famous Blvd de la Croissette -- you can see many people huddled together in separate tables having serious discussions. I had wondered then if this is how some sales are facilitated?

Hugh was in Cannes for a presentation ( not part of In Competition) for XMen:TheLastStand).

New plot and filming details for Hugh Jackman’s offbeat detective film have come to light! ‘Three Bags Full’ is slated to begin shooting in summer 2024. Jackman will take up the leading role as the shepherd to a flock of anthropomorphic sheep. The film adapts Leonie Swann’s 2005 German novel of the same name.



Set against the backdrop of the quaint Irish village of Glennkill, the narrative follows a flock of sheep who find their shepherd murdered, with his body pinned to the ground with a spade. These aren’t your average run-of-the-barn sheep, however, as George had taken very good care of them, reading to them every night and exposing them to a range of literature. This practice gave them the ability to understand human speech as well as the workings of human minds. Seeing their caring master so brutally murdered, the sheep turn sleuth and begin investigating the villagers of Glennkill.


The investigation is led by Miss Maple, the smartest sheep in the world, who assembles her A-team to track down the killer. She is joined by Othello, the maverick black ram; Mopple the Whale, a merino with the appetite and memory of an elephant; and Zora, a black-faced ewe inclined towards existential nihilism and staring into the abyss. Along with other skilled members of the flock, the sheep spend the night analyzing the crime, engaging in discussions and metaphysical speculations.

Putting their theorizing on hold, the sheep head into the village to conduct reconnaissance and gather leads. Scouring the villagers for potential murderers, it doesn’t take them long to draw up a list of suspects. There is the obviously terrifying butcher, Ham; Gabriel, a suspicious shepherd to a strange flock of sheep; Rebecca, an enigmatic and scheming newcomer who is hiding a secret; and Father Will, a baleful priest. As they dig deeper into the mystery, the sheep are faced with their own baa-rdens of love, guilt, morality, and responsibility.



Coincidentally, Hugh Jackman visited Ireland in February 2024 after wrapping up his filming for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ with Ryan Reynolds. He is set to lead the drama ‘Apostle Paul,’ based on the titular historical figure whose visions of Jesus Christ transformed him. Jackman is also expected to star in ‘The Death of Robin Hood,’ a dark reimagining of the classic tale that sees a scarred version of the character grapple with his sins while being offered a chance at redemption.

‘Three Bags Full’ is joining a range of interesting and eclectic movies being made in London this season. Kunal Nayyar’s ‘Christmas Karma’ puts an immigrant spin on ‘A Christmas Carol’ and began shooting in the capital city on April 22, 2024. Noomi Rapace’s ‘Reckoner’ is a psychological thriller that will begin filming here in July. Principal photography for ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ recently took place in the city. Some of the other latest projects lensed in the city include Tom Kingsley’s action comedy ‘Deep Cover,’ Tom Cruise’s ‘Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part Two,’ Prime Video’s ‘Levon’s Trade,’ and the fifth season of Apple TV’s ‘Slow Horses.’

Hopefully, the film project THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD will have an excellent reception at the Film Market where WME Independent will present it for the sale of distribution rights.

Hugh Jackman & Jodie Comer have excellent acting credentials!

Hugh Jackman is a Tony winner for TheBoyfromOz & an Olivier nominee for Oklahoma!. He is also an Oscar nominee for Les Miserables.

Jodie Comer won a Tony and an Olivier for her role in Prima Facie.

Both are also Emmy winners.


So, while both are known for their film acting, they also have excellent theatre credentials.

And in a story set in Merrie ole England -- both have British roots!

The overriding message this market? “There’s a lot”.

“A few weeks ago we thought there would a decent amount but, wow, there’s a lot”, one packaging agent told us.

They continued: “After a busy EFM, once again it feels like a healthy market in terms of product. The early responses from the sellers and indie buyers has been good. Those international distributors have re-stabilised their business somewhat, more so than the streamers. We’ll know more in a week but at the moment there are plenty of decently priced projects with meaningful actors, directors and scripts, and there is a good spread of projects.”



There’s Kristen Stewart returning on a vampire movie, Dwayne Johnson in a big-budget A24 wrestling movie, Mahershalah Ali in a gritty big-canvas crime movie, a couple of Jason Statham projects for those who want brawn, historical drama with Russell Crowe, a YA empowerment pic with Chris Pratt, and there’s musical comedy with Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas for those who want something lighter.

As buyers point out to us, the sheer volume means that some of the scripts aren’t hitting quality wise, but there is a solid nucleus of good ones. The safe space of genre is being leaned into with plenty of thrillers and horror. Long-awaited international buyer collaboration is coming into effect via groups like the MadRiver consortium of buyers and the Vuelta group. Hunting in packs may be a way into the best content.

Domestic remains a major challenge in terms of acquisitions: “The US is really tough,” one packager told us. “The values domestically are probably a third or quarter what they were even two years ago. We need a healthy ecosystem from the top to the bottom of the chain so in an ideal world even the smaller distributors would still have their TV deals in place.”

But the mood is one of optimism that buying will get done. “I think the A and B level distributors will be biting in Cannes — the studios and streamers,” another seller told us. “There weren’t a lot of US deals in the end at the EFM but there were a number of offers made. We’re already getting interest from buyers of different sizes.”

It was a stacked EFM slate and solid dealmaking was done even if there weren’t quite as many splashy announcements made. Our Cannes hot list below has 20 more projects (coming in at close to 50 pre-sale titles) on it than our EFM list and more are still being announced.

The festival lineup also offers opportunities with movies such as Donald Trump pic The Apprentice starring Sebastian Stan and Jacques Audiard’s English-language film Emilia Perez with Selena Gomez among intriguing projects expected to sell. Coppola’s Megalopolis is also in play — as we revealed it has recently been picked up by some major international buyers.

As the Cannes Film Festival kicks off with a star-studded lineup, the real intrigue lies beyond the red carpet in the bustling Cannes market, where the next big film projects are brewing.

LATE FAME Sandra Hüller leads a star-studded project expected to command a lot of buzz on the Croisette — and future red carpets.



The Cannes Film Festival officially kicks off on Wednesday, with new films from globally known auteurs like Andrea Arnold, Paul Schrader, Jia Zhangke and Yorgos Lanthimos filling the competition slots.

It’s a good reminder that Cannes is much, much more than the red carpet at the Grand Palais, and in a much less glitzy corner of the Croisette you’ll find the bright shining hopes of film festivals yet to come: the Cannes market (the sort of stuff our joint newsletter will dive into).

Sales titles are technically none of my business — we hand statues to the finished product, not the best laid plans of a press release. But some of the projects that hit my inbox inevitably caught my attention and just might be fodder for awards seasons to come. A few favorites:



Willem Dafoe and Sandra Hüller in Late Fame. A project that very well could have been born at an event during last year’s awards season — Poor Things’ Dafoe and Anatomy of a Fall’s Hüller, joining up with May December writer Samy Burch and producer Christine Vachon. The director is Kent Jones, the former head of the New York Film Festival who’s teamed up with Martin Scorsese for several documentaries and made his narrative debut with 2018’s Diane. If your movie isn’t selling at Cannes, you can tell yourself all the big names were taken up by this one.

Ben Stiller and Colin Farrell in Belly of the Beast. All of Us Strangers may have sputtered out at the end of last Oscar season, but director Andrew Haigh remains a major talent, and he’ll further raise his profile with this project, recounting the troubled friendship between Norman Mailer (Stiller) and former convict Jack Henry Abbott (Farrell). Stiller, who has mostly been working on his own projects like Escape at Dannemora and Severance, could be the fascinating wildcard here.

Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer do Robin Hood. Spare me your eyerolls about yet another Robin Hood story — like King Arthur or Harry Potter, you’re simply never going to be rid of him. With direction from Michael Sarnoski, of Pig and the upcoming A Quiet Place: Day One, this might be an imaginative take that actually lives up to the word. Yes, that’s what we thought about Ridley Scott’s 2010 version, but let us dream, okay?

Russell Crowe and Rami Malek go to Nuremberg. It’s been 63 years since Judgment at Nuremberg won two Oscars, and Oppenheimer has World War II back on Hollywood’s radar, so why not give it another spin? James Vanderbilt, best known as a writer for Zodiac and recently Scream VI, is writing and directing, and the cast is pretty stacked beyond the two best actor winners at the top: Michael Shannon, John Slattery, Richard E. Grant, Colin Hanks, One Day breakout Leo Woodall and more.

Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård in leather. No, there’s no set photo, but it seems like a safe assumption based on the description for the “kinky queer romance” Pillion. Skarsgård plays the head of a motorcycle club who takes on Melling’s Colin as his submissive, and takes “all sorts of virginities along the way.” Harry Lighton is behind the camera for the first time, and it doesn’t exactly scream Oscar bait, but I look forward to it being an extremely coveted ticket at Sundance 2026.



Doing the Math on The Bear
Last week FX released a very coy teaser trailer and confirmed a release date for season three of The Bear, which is pretty remarkably sticking to its traditional June release despite last year’s strikes. Last year, season two debuted in the thick of Emmy nomination round voting, a canny move that ensured it was top of mind as the first season was up for its first awards. This year, probably more confident that the nominations are in hand, FX is debuting the show on June 27, four days after nominations round voting closes.

Still, it will ensure that the show is still far fresher in voters’ minds than pretty much anything else — not exactly an edge you need when you’re the odds-on favorite in your category, but hey, it doesn’t hurt.

In a competitive situation, A24 has acquired the U.S. rights to Michael Sarnoski’s The Death of Robin Hood which will star Academy Award-nominee Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer from Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company.

Lyrical Media is fully financing the film. Academy Award-nominee Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce under their Ryder Picture Company banner alongside Alexander Black for Lyrical Media. Lyrical’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers will executive produce with Rama Gottumukkala, Michael Sarnoski, and Hugh Jackman.


A24 is planning a theatrical release. WME Independent, which represents the worldwide sales rights to the film, negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers with A24.

The film follows the title character grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder, an aging Robin Hood finds himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman, he is offered a chance at salvation. Production on the film is set to begin in February 2025.

Lyrical Media, Ryder Picture Company and A24 recently partnered on Adam Wingard’s action thriller Onslaught. Lyrical and RPC entered into a first look deal last week to produce and finance RPC films, genre agnostic with budgets of $10 million and up, over two years with an option to extend to a third year.

This marks the second project with A24 and Comer who is set to star in a series adaptation of Jen Beagin’s Sex Therapy and the novel Big Swiss For HBO with A24 and Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries producing.

Out of Cannes, A24 recently acquired the U.S. rights to Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down, starring Kirsten Dunst, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun and Samantha Morton.

A24 has nabbed U.S. rights to “The Death of Robin Hood,” one of the hottest packages at this year’s Cannes. The Sherwood Forest-set film stars Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer and is directed by Michael Sarnoski, the filmmaker behind the critically-acclaimed “Pig” and this summer’s “A Quiet Place: Day One.”

According to the official logline, the film will find Robin Hood “grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder.” Instead of the merry outlaw seen in certain previous versions of the story like the one portrayed by Errol Flynn, this Robin Hood is “a battleworn loner [who] finds himself gravely injured and in the hands of a mysterious woman, who offers him a chance at salvation.” Production on “The Death of Robin Hood” is set to begin in 2025. A24 will release the film theatrically. Negotiations were highly competitive with several potential buyers circling the film.



Jackman will next be seen opposite Ryan Reynolds in this summer’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.” His other credits include “The Greatest Showman,” “The Prestige” and his Oscar-nominated role in “Les Miserables.” On stage, he won a Tony Award for his performance in “The Boy From Oz” and was nominated for the same prize for his hit revival of “The Music Man.”

Comer won an Emmy for her work on “Killing Eve” and a Tony Award for her one-woman performance in “Prima Facie.” She also starred in Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel” alongside Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and will soon appear inn “The Bikeriders” co-starring with Austin Butler and Tom Hardy.

It’s a reunion of sorts for the companies behind “The Death of Robin Hood.” Lyrical Media, Ryder Picture Company and A24 recently partnered on Adam Wingard’s action thriller “Onslaught.” Lyrical and Ryder entered into a first look deal last week to produce and finance Ryder’s films, which will be genre agnostic and carry budgets of $10 million and up. The writer is also directing the movie. I've also thought of seeing a similar storyline & character development as in LOGAN. The leads are strong dramatic actors so it is likely this is going to be more of serious drama? I don't think this is meant to be a spectacle.

In TheDeathOfRobinHood,the 2nd part is supposedly about redemption,forgiveness&mercy.Sounds like 2 roles that HughJackman has delivered, both w/ strong dramatic endings,LesMiserables/Logan.
I wonder if Part 2 turns out to be an exceptional 2-character standoff (Jackman&Comer)
