In a competitive situation, A24 has acquired the U.S. rights to Michael Sarnoski’s The Death of Robin Hood which will star Academy Award-nominee Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer from Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company.

Lyrical Media is fully financing the film. Academy Award-nominee Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce under their Ryder Picture Company banner alongside Alexander Black for Lyrical Media. Lyrical’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers will executive produce with Rama Gottumukkala, Michael Sarnoski, and Hugh Jackman.


A24 is planning a theatrical release. WME Independent, which represents the worldwide sales rights to the film, negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers with A24.

The film follows the title character grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder, an aging Robin Hood finds himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman, he is offered a chance at salvation. Production on the film is set to begin in February 2025.

Lyrical Media, Ryder Picture Company and A24 recently partnered on Adam Wingard’s action thriller Onslaught. Lyrical and RPC entered into a first look deal last week to produce and finance RPC films, genre agnostic with budgets of $10 million and up, over two years with an option to extend to a third year.

This marks the second project with A24 and Comer who is set to star in a series adaptation of Jen Beagin’s Sex Therapy and the novel Big Swiss For HBO with A24 and Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries producing.

Out of Cannes, A24 recently acquired the U.S. rights to Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down, starring Kirsten Dunst, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun and Samantha Morton.

A24 has nabbed U.S. rights to “The Death of Robin Hood,” one of the hottest packages at this year’s Cannes. The Sherwood Forest-set film stars Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer and is directed by Michael Sarnoski, the filmmaker behind the critically-acclaimed “Pig” and this summer’s “A Quiet Place: Day One.”

According to the official logline, the film will find Robin Hood “grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder.” Instead of the merry outlaw seen in certain previous versions of the story like the one portrayed by Errol Flynn, this Robin Hood is “a battleworn loner [who] finds himself gravely injured and in the hands of a mysterious woman, who offers him a chance at salvation.” Production on “The Death of Robin Hood” is set to begin in 2025. A24 will release the film theatrically. Negotiations were highly competitive with several potential buyers circling the film.



Jackman will next be seen opposite Ryan Reynolds in this summer’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.” His other credits include “The Greatest Showman,” “The Prestige” and his Oscar-nominated role in “Les Miserables.” On stage, he won a Tony Award for his performance in “The Boy From Oz” and was nominated for the same prize for his hit revival of “The Music Man.”

Comer won an Emmy for her work on “Killing Eve” and a Tony Award for her one-woman performance in “Prima Facie.” She also starred in Ridley Scott’s “The Last Duel” alongside Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and will soon appear inn “The Bikeriders” co-starring with Austin Butler and Tom Hardy.

The writer is also directing the movie. I've also thought of seeing a similar storyline & character development as in LOGAN. The leads are strong dramatic actors so it is likely this is going to be more of serious drama? I don't think this is meant to be a spectacle.

This is a different reimagining.
HughJackman has strong dramatic skills -as seen in some of his dramatic movies (Logan/LesMiserables/Prisoners/Prestige/Fountain. etc) & w/ co-Tony winner Jodie Comer, may surprise us with the presumably contentious second part of the story?

The Connery/Hepburn version, although also based on the old legends, was turned  into a romantic love story.

This movie project is different from that slant -- even if it also borrows from the old folktales/ballads on the death of Robin Hood.

I have read a review of the script with some details on the story...but i am still trying to get a copy of the full script because the review did not cover the presumably contentious part where Robin Hood and the character played by Jodie Comer bring on the drama & the contentious sides of the protagonists!

GENRE : REDEMPTION THRILLER

In a sense, the genre description of "Redemption thriller" relates to Les Miserables as well, as it does to Logan.

Those 2 films, while generally perceived more as involving action drama, also shows peaceful resolutions of the crisis at the end, even if death of the protagonist is involved.

How will this movie end and bring it to that kind of ending?

For sure, they are the kind of storytelling and dramatic plots that brings out Hugh Jackman's best acting moments!

PS: Someone has shared the screenplay with me, so my conclusions are based on my initial assessment of this film project ( which can change when it is actually filmed) vis-a-vis completed movies like Les Miserables & Logan.

I hope “Deadpool & Wolverine” is Hugh Jackman’s last time in the claws for his sake. He Is Wolverine onscreen to me, but he’s given over 20 years of his career to the role and has shown great talent outside it. I want him to enjoy what he does, not be burdened by it.

Zygi Kamasa’s True Brit Entertainment has pre-bought UK rights to Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture company’s The Death of Robin Hood, which is set to star Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer.

The acquisition, brokered by WME Independent, was lined up at the Cannes market where A24 took domestic rights.

As we revealed heading into the market, the dark reimagining of the classic story will see Robin Hood grappling with his lot after a life of crime and murder and chart how a mysterious woman offers him a chance of salvation. Michael Sarnoski is directing with production due to start in February or March, 2025.


The film is expected to shoot in the UK, qualifying it as at least partly British, and thus a fit for True Brit, which specialises in British projects.

Lyrical Media is fully financing the film. Oscar nominee Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce under their Ryder Picture Company banner alongside Alexander Black for Lyrical Media. Lyrical’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers will executive-produce with Rama Gottumukkala, Michael Sarnoski, and Hugh Jackman.

Zygi Kamasa, CEO and Founder of True Brit Entertainment, said: “Our role in the industry is to champion British stories on a global stage but also to bring the best of British stories to audiences in the UK. This movie is an important title for the British indie space with two major global stars in a film that shows a different take on a well-loved figure of English folklore. We are undoubtedly very excited to have it on our growing slate.”

True Brit has picked up seven films since launching last fall.

What an irony if they did not film this most English tale elsewhere than in England!

Hope they can film early (February, not March) with the possibility of a late limited theatrical release in December ( to qualify for any Oscar consideration)?

As I was going through this process, I was like, 'It's pretty obvious that it has to be that movie.' I just kind of fell in love with it more and more. Then, as we brought these incredible actors on, it's where my heart's gonna be at for the next year," he explained.


When Will 'The Death of Robin Hood' Begin Production?

The Death of Robin Hood is set to begin filming in February 2025. Sarnoski acknowledged the peculiar feeling of planning so far ahead, stating, "It is, but with movies, time collapses so much. You're shooting in February, that means you're gonna start prepping in, like, November, and then suddenly it's like, 'Well, November is only a handful of months away.' The timelines compress pretty quickly, and there's so much to do — location scouting, figuring this out and that out, and getting the whole team together."


When asked whether the movie would be a two-hander in a house or feature action set pieces, Sarnoski said, "It's a little bit of both. It has a sort of different version of the epic Robin that we're used to, while also a very intimate story that's going throughout, as well. So, it'll have a little bit for everyone in that sense."

The first part focuses on the some of the late-age battles that Rohin Hood is confronted with... while the second part is all about his healing time at the place where he interacts with this mysterious lady who is both a healer ... and maybe something else?

But it looks like the sketch is based on another Australian who was identified with the Robin Hood role -- Errol Flynn.

Gravely injured, Robin is taken in by Sister Brigid, a mysterious healer who offers him a chance at redemption.



The plot progresses through the encounter of a young girl, disguised as a boy, with a hermit who kills her when she tries to attack him. The hermit’s old friend, Edward, seeks his help to reclaim his stolen farm. Together, they brutally eliminate the family occupying it, but Edward loses his wife in the battle. When the local warlord learns of Robin’s presence, he attacks, leading to a fierce confrontation. Near death, Robin is taken to Sister Brigid’s island for healing.



Jackman is joining a long line of stars who have portrayed Robin Hood, including Errol Flynn, Sean Connery, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe, etc. The Australian actor is currently awaiting the release of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ which will mark his long-awaited return as the Marvel Comics superhero Wolverine since the 2017 film ‘Logan,’ which also explores the themes of ‘The Death of Robin Hood.’ He also lent his voice to Big Greg in the animated sitcom ‘Koala Man,’ and will appear in ‘Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie.’

Comer, having risen to prominence with her breakout performance as the psychopathic killer Villanelle in ‘Killing Eve,’ recently starred in ‘The Bikeriders‘ as Kathy Cross, opposite Austin Butler and Tom Hardy. Of course, given the success of Jackson's most recognizable character and his recent return to the franchise in Deadpool & Wolverine, the similarities are sure to bode well for The Death of Robin Hood.

The fact that this new version of Robin Hood is so similar to Logan makes it no surprise that Sarnosk would think of Jackman when casting The Death of Robin Hood. The aged and weary hero archetype requires a great deal of emotion be communicated to the audience through minimal dialogue. The performance is entirely about body language and facial expressions, which isn't something every actor has experience with. Jackman's portrayal of Logan came with spatterings of comedy and was even campy at times. However, when it came time to bring nuanced emotion to the screen, he was ready.

There is still a lot unknown about The Death of Robin Hood, but the film's tagline describes a character that will demand the same of Jackman. So far, it seems that Sarnosk is aiming for a darker, more somber tone than even other Robin Hood movies, so the project itself should differ significantly from the X-Men films in every other way. However, Jackman's character is sure to feel very similar on the surface. Of course, such similarities between roles can be dangerous for actors, who may fear being typecast moving forward in their careers. However, this isn't something Jackman would need to worry about.

Director Michael Sarnoski gives an update on the filming window for Hugh Jackman's The Death of Robin Hood. Described as a “dark retelling” of the story surrounding the legendary figure from British folklore, The Death of Robin Hood is also set to star Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer. Per the movie’s official logline, Jackman’s titular hero will find himself depicted as “a battleworn loner” who is grappling with his criminal past and finds himself in the care of a mysterious woman after being gravely injured.

Speaking with Screen Rant for the digital release of A Quiet Place: Day One, Sarnoski revealed that filming on The Death of Robin Hood is planned to begin early next year. While he wishes to avoid spoiling the movie’s unique approach to the Robin Hood legend, he did suggest that Jackman’s version will “go beyond what people are expecting.” Check out his comments below:

So I think we're planning to start filming that early next year. I don't want to give too much away, but I think Hugh Jackman, we all know, is an incredible actor. We're gonna get to see him do some pretty different, amazing stuff. He has quite a range with this character that he's going to be exploring. I think people think of Robin is sort of like, he's gonna steal from the rich, give to the poor. We have an idea for what that character is. But I think what he's going to do with this character is going to go beyond what people are expecting, and I'm really excited to see to see him dive into it.

Having already been portrayed on screen over 70 times in various film and television incarnations, audiences are no strangers to the tale of Robin Hood and the different spin each filmmaker tries to put on his character. From gritty, historical epics to more romanticized and far-fetched reimaginings, the famous outlaw of Sherwood Forest has been played by many actors, from Sean Connery and Russell Crowe to Kevin Costner and Taron Egerton. However, the vast majority of these adaptations have largely focused on Robin Hood’s origin story and his initial transformation into a legendary outlaw.

Yet from the details that have already emerged about Sarnoski’s movie, The Death of Robin Hood will likely cover an equally important part of the folklore, albeit an arc that has largely been overlooked in modern times. Potentially harkening back to the 17th-century ballad, Robin Hoode his Death, this portion of the legend's story covers his murder at the hands of one he trusts the most. While two different, yet incomplete, versions of the ballad have survived, both suggest that it is Robin’s own cousin, from whom he seeks healing, who betrays him and is ultimately responsible for his death.

In one version of the ballad, Robin's cousin leaves him weakened from blood loss so that her lover, and Robin's sworn enemy, Red Roger can slay him.

Based on the screenplay that has been shared with some scriptwriting websites -- there is much more to the story.

It is described as an "action-drama"

Unless the director/screenwriter changes the story drastically, as it stands --

*the first part is all about the last fierce battles the aging Robin Hood faces. Unexpectedly, he is injured seriously, even mortally.

*the second part is all about his search for healing... leading to his meeting a mysterious woman who is supposed to be a healer. It explores their relationship as he goes through a long period of healing...or a period that leads to his death.

There is some truth to the comparison to the Ballad that exists on the death of Rohin Hood.

I think what Sarnoski will develop even more fully is the second part - the changing good and/or antagonistic relationship between the mortally-wounded Robin and the mysterious healer -- it is expected that we will see a strong storyline on this relationship. The hiring of a strong theatre actress like Jodie Comer seems to indicate that the relationship will not be a calm and peaceful one. Will she cause his death??

Hugh & Jodie are considered strong dramatic actors - why is why I think Sarnosky was interested in casting them in the roles.

I do not think there is any similarity to LOGAN at all...

unless Sarnoski decides to change his screenplay.

Up next for Sarnoski is “The Death of Robin Hood,” which he spoke about at length and said he hoped would be a bridge between his first film, “Pig,” and his latest film, “A Day One.”

“I’m doing the ‘The Death of Robin Hood’ with Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer. And this is a script I wrote just before writing ‘Quiet Place,’ it was a little bit of a deal I made with myself,” he explained. “I was like, ‘If I’m going to make a big studio movie, I wanna have a smaller movie that is all mine that I can be working on in the background. So, we’ve been piecing that together while working on this, and I’m really excited about it. ‘Pig’ was a very tiny movie, ‘Quiet Place’ was a very big movie, and ‘Death Of Robin Hood’ is right in between there, so it’ll be fun to use what I learned on both sides and—it’s only my third movie so, I still have tons to learn, but hopefully I’ll be able to take the best of both worlds and make something that I really love. I think Hugh is going to be incredible in it and Jodie is amazing. “

Sarnoski also suggested that the idea scared him a bit, like all his films so far, which was a good sign.

“I like movies where you’re like initially, ‘Are you sure you wanna do that? ‘Are you sure you want to make a movie about a dying person getting pizza?’ ‘Are you sure you want to make a movie about a guy looking for his truffle pig?’” he recalled of this thinking. “And Robin Hood movies kind of have a legacy of being like, ‘I dunno, maybe we should take a break from Robin Hood movies,’ and so it was kind of a challenge to myself like, ‘Can I write a version of a Robin Hood movie that I would have to make, and when you do that, you almost want to fail, to be like, ‘Oh, thank god, I was right, it was a bad idea, I shouldn’t have done Robin Hood,’ but I wrote this version, and I was like, ‘Oh no, I have to make this movie. This is the version of the story I need to make. So, unfortunately, I think it’s going to be really good, and I’m really excited about it [laughs].”

1st part of DeathOfRobinHood is action filled as he fights his last battles( yup, in his waning years). But the second part is the dramatic story of his healing or not healing, in the hands of mysterious healer played by JodieComer! Both are theatre-trained - acting histrionics!
