Just saw this, too. I hope it's not a prank - they're supposedly selling tickets to it! Maybe Hugh will come out and confirm it soon. It would be wonderful if true! But yeah, one of my first thoughts was, why Philadelphia? But still, I hope it's true!

It's a good Oscar voting campaign move given the timing with Les Miserables in wide release around most of the globe.
1/10 Oscar Nominations 1/13 Golden Globe Awards 1/27 SAG Awards

According to the Deadline.com scoop about Jake Gyllenhaal finally signing up for the role of the detective, there is mention that the movie is slated for an early 2013 filming to give it room for a fall 2013 release date!www.deadline.com/2012/10/jake-gyllenhaal-joins-hugh-jackman-in-thriller-prisoners/So, why would Hugh be signing up for a special show in Philadelphia ( unless it is just a personal appearance and not a performance, maybe as a favor to someone) if there are early filming plans for PRISONERS? Why not? If the PRISONERS movie might film in Philly, why not perform a benefit show beforehand in the City of Brotherly Love? It shows good will, too.
Pricey tix, yes--but such is usually the case with Hugh's projects. Still, very exciting news.

I've thought about that, too - -that it might film in Philadelphia -- although the last time the movie was planned for filming, the location was in Derby, Connecticut. The story's setting is somewhere in Boston.
The first time around, do you remember when he shared with the box office people at the Schoenfeld in late 2009 that he would be doing this movie somewhere in Connecticut or thereabouts?
But I stlll think this is for a special cause or maybe a favor to someone?

Of course, there has been no official announcement from the producers or the city/town concerned.
The update info came from a site which provides this kind of information for current or planned film productions.
We'll see if the filming actually takes place in those areas.

If you scroll down that page there is a horrendously scathing comment by someone who apparently knows nothing of Hugh's performance history. PS: Please, spirits of the universe, let this be recorded by someone!

It's an hour away from home for me, but I'm not at home and won't be on that date. Out of curiosity, I checked availability, and it's sold out except for the uppermost balcony. I remember seeing Liza and Joel Grey in concert many years ago, and those were the only seats left. It was like watching a couple of ants on that stage. I vowed to never again sit in nosebleed territory at the Academy.
I'm sure that those lucky enough to have gotten decent seats will be in for a real treat. I wonder if he'll do something from Les Mis?

www.mcall.com/entertainment/music/mc-hugh-jackman-academy-music-philadelphia-20130124,0,5456423.story [/b] Hugh Jackman performs with the Philadelphia Orchestra for the Academy of Music 156th Anniversary Concert Jan. 26. (NICK LEARY, CONTRIBUTED PHOTO / September 3, 2008) •420 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106, USA By Jodi Duckett, Of The Morning Call 10:21 p.m. EST, January 24, 2013 The Academy of Music in Philadelphia is a grand old lady, an elegant European-style performing arts space that opened in 1857 on the city's vibrant Broad Street. The country's oldest running opera house, featuring a crystal chandelier 50 feet in circumference, it was the home of the Philadelphia Orchestra for 100 years and continues to host performances of opera, theater and other cultural events. Some of the biggest stars in the world have graced its stage and one more arrives Saturday night for the Academy's 156th Anniversary Concert and Ball, the academy's biggest fundraiser of the year. The featured performer is Hugh Jackman, a Tony and Emmy winner currently at the top of the A-list as an Oscar nominee for Best Actor for his role as Jean Valjean in the film version of "Les Miserables." Jackman will sing and dance with the Philadelphia Orchestra, led by new young conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin.The evening is being billed as a nod to the first Academy Anniversary Concert on Jan. 26, 1957, during which conductor Eugene Ormandy shared his podium with show biz song and dance man Danny Kaye, and other guests included classical artists Marian Anderson, Hilde Gueden, Arthur Rubinstein and Isaac Stern, along with popular singer Dinah Shore. The academy gala has always been star-studded. For most years, the guest artists were rooted in the world of classical music. Then came the academy's 150th anniversary in 2007. Organizers "decided to look back at all the performance genres that take place in the academy and create a concert that touched on a lot of them," says Joanna Lewis, president and CEO of the academy. Singer Rod Stewart took the stage that year for a program of popular and classical music. Recent years have featured Billy Joel, James Taylor, Sting, Paul Simon (with opera singer Renee Fleming) and Diana Krall. The 150th anniversary was further glamorized by royal visitors — Prince Charles and his wife Camilla — who attended at the invitation of Lee Annenberg, who was being honored for a major gift to restore the ballroom. Annenberg's husband Walter Annenberg knew the prince from his time as British ambassador. Crowds lined the streets hoping for a glimpse. "This year we decided to change it up again and looked at other ways to create an exciting concert, and Hugh Jackman's name came up," Lewis says. "He is an exciting, vibrant and talented performer and we thought, 'Wouldn't he be great with the orchestra?' Yannick liked the fact that we're doing something a little different. We thought Hugh would be well known enough and we knew that 'Les Mis' was coming out. But we signed him a long time before the movie came out. We were lucky it is as successful as it is." The program is a closely guarded secret, designed to increase the excitement, but here's what Lewis would say. The concert will begin with the orchestra performing classical selections that show off its talent and spotlight one member, whose name is not being revealed. Jackman will present familiar work — "bits and pieces of the various shows he has been involved with" — backed by the orchestra, and is expected to use his comedic flair. It remains to be seen if Wolverine, his famous "X-Men" character, will make an appearance.
Will Jackman — who is a three-time host of the Tony Awards — take the conductor's wand? Lewis wouldn't say, but comments, "People will be talking about this for awhile."The annual academy event is one of the highlights of the entertainment and social scene in the greater Philadelphia region. "It's a wonderful beginning of the year celebration of the city," says Gloria de Pasquale, a cellist in the orchestra since 1977. "A lot of people come from different walks of life. You don't just see the society crowd." However, the society crowd is always there, dressed in their finest ball attire. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter plans to attend, as does Gov. Tom Corbett. It's also one of the few times the orchestra returns to the academy to perform, having moved to its new home at the Kimmel Center in 2001. "When we come back to the academy, it's always a special moment for us," Pasquale says. The event is an important part of keeping the academy, a National Historic Landmark, alive. It funds improvement and maintenance projects. Gala proceeds have funded a new main house curtain, conservation of the ceiling murals and wood sculptures, and the restoration of the main lobby and grand staircase to their former splendor. Lewis says this year's projects are to replace the steps in front of the building and the cornice on the Broad Street facade. "Our theme is 'Celebrating New Beginnings,'" Lewis says, "a nod to the exciting new era with Yannick, the fact that we emerged from bankruptcy and are plowing forward in a new era to attract a younger generation.[/quote]"

Hugh Jackman wows @ 2night's Academy Ball that benefits Academy of Music & @philaorchestrahttp://tinyurl.com/b56crzsA report on the evening -- Saturday, January 26, 2013Hugh Jackman Wows at the Academy Ball Tonight was the 156th Philadelphia Orchestra Academy Ball, which benefits the Orchestra and the Academy of Music. Globe Globe winner Hugh Jackman, who will probably win the Oscar for his performance in "Les Miserables". was the special guest star. Jackman performed a Peter Allen number in honor of today being Australia Day, Australian Independence Day. Naturally, he performed a number from "Les Miserables". He made it clear that he came to sing with one of the wold's great orchestras. "Singer rarely get to sing with an 18 piece orchestra let alone a 75 piece orchestra," said Jackman. "I sang on the set of "Les Miserables" with a transistor like device in my ear that had a piano playing nearby. " As a tribute to the orchestra, he recited the first names of all 75 members of the orchestra. The personal movie star acted like a native. Being a big soccer fan, he wiped Yanick's brow with a Philadelphia Union T shirt. He danced with Pennsylvania's First Lady, Susan Corbett, and kissed Academy of Music president, Joanna Lewis. Of course, there were the obligatory Philly cheesesteak jokes. His young daughter Ava brought him one on stage." Cole Hamel of the Phillies and his wife Heidi also briefly graced the stage. They attended the Young Friend's Ball. Heidi said, 'It was their first ball." The Hamels thanked the Philadelphia Orchestra and Academy of Music for preserving the cultural heritage for their children On the same page are two brief video clips from his performance:*MACK THE KNIFE *WHO AM I (alas, too short!!) Philly cheesesteaks rolled out with Ava's help ... (Her stage debut) ... Reciting every member of the orchestra"s name ...singing the most richly resonant version of "Who Am I?" I've ever heard him do ... Riffing about a guy and his wife whom he met in the hotel elevator ... the best "Soliloquy" I've ever heard (what great acoustics!). ... Leading a boys' choir in ISCAH ...bringing out Kierran, Emily and Hilary for "One Night Only" ... chatting with Hugh, Patrick and others... just some of the highlights of a fabulous evening. Tired now; to be continued.
