Thanks for your supportive post on IMDB, Jamie  Why do people dismiss the chances of a movie as well cast as Prisoners and with a potentially great script to bring the story home ? I am glad that the movie is also coming on the back of The Wolverine -- his last three movies ( not counting Movie43 - LOL!) would really mirror his versatility as an actor. Les Miserables, The Wolverine, and Prisoners! I guess IMDB/AD snobs do not think highly of actors who deign to do tentpoles, unless the tentpole is by an "auteur" ( gag!). Maybe if Aronofsky did not bail out on The Wolverine, some of the old boys club would think that this can be artistic, too - LOL! Jo |

I am not sure if you have already posted this, Jamie ( I read your feedback reaction on the page), - but Clayton Davis's updated Awards Circuit ( as of May 13) has Hugh Jackman as a Best Actor top 5 possibility -- www.awardscircuit.com/2013/05/13/2014-oscar-predictions-updated-the-year-for-ridley-scott/It is not just the stellar cast and the promising director (Villeneuve's work in Incendies), but noted cinematographer Roger Deakins is DP for this movie. Deakins has been nominated for an Oscar ten times, but no award to-date. He has been given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the ASC ( American Society of Cinematographers). Hope the trailer really comes out soon, so we can get a feel of the movie. And I hope it also clears up, to some extent, the doubts of those who cannot understand why there is buzz for this relatively unknown movie ( " with a generic theme", as dismissed by someone). Jo |

The only PRISONERS actor without an Oscar or Golden Globe nomination is Paul Dano. But he earned a BAFTA nomination for his work in There Will Be Blood

"Entertainment Tonight" is supposed to have a feature on Hugh, Jake and PRISONERS tomorrow (Thursday) evening. Perhaps they'll show some of the trailer...?

Trailer is out >  www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpXfcTF6iVkGreat drama in a quiet New England town - it looks the atmosphere is well-captured in this movie! Some pretty intense scenes with Hugh! Jake seems lowkey ( but will probably match some of Hugh's intensity eventually), Maria, Viola and Terence look well cast! Melissa looks innocent while Paul Dano could surprise with his acting. Did Maria's character say "he sings in the shower..." ( or something) and Hugh hugs her endearingly. I wonder - will we see Hugh give us some surprise singing scenes in the shower? Anything to give us another glimpse of his singing ( in the shower)  smiley-happy036 Jo |

I think the trailer is perfect. It gives away just enough. It looks really beautifully filmed, too. I hope people can see how versatile Hugh is now.

Carson Reeves's site SCRIPTSHADOW was where I first saw the link to the script of PRISONERS (sorry, he had to take down the link eventually). And I do remember that there was a lot of buzz for the script because the work of a newcomer scripwriter was bought for a million dollars :o

The reactions to the trailer across the internet has been very positive - whether on the feedback section of the trailer on YouTube, on twitter, on film sites and even on IMDB ( MOVIE AWARDS and the IMDB-PRISONERS page itself).
Of course there is not much familiarity with the storyline ( except that people equate it to TAKEN or MYSTIC RIVER or even a French film called SEVEN DAYS) and, even much less, an understanding of the kind of characters playing in this seemingly simple dramatic turn of events in a quiet town. Ha - many think LOKI's name alone qualifies him as the real baddie ( because the name LOKI in Norse mythology means "god of mischief"). Of course the Paul Dano character gets extra attention because of what the trailer implies... But even more so, people think that the role of Keller Dover is a typical hero who is tempted to become a vigilante after his daughter went missing. As simple as that!
Uh-uh...Keller is not that kind of a character and once again Hugh has taken on a role which is not exactly always sympathetic or even heroic. Hugh fans might be in for a big surprise! Maybe it is because Hugh Jackman has always had the image of a heroic figure in movies?
SPOILERS ALERT************SPOILERS ALERT***********SPOILERS ALERT*************SPOILERS ALERT
The character is much more complicated than just a nice man prodded by circumstances to act rashly but saves the day.
Keller is a control freak, domineering, must-protect-my-family-at-all-costs kind of provider, inwardly insecure ( he has a basement full of provisions for every and any kind of catastrophe). Most importantly, he is ironically a bible-quoting head of the family but eventually does not respect the teachings of the GOOD BOOK. He loses his humanity in the process. He practically became almost a monster and displayed unusual cruelty for an ordinary person! That is the challenge of the role - has Hugh pulled it off very well?
I am drawn to compare this role with other roles he has played with anti-hero leanings. In DECEPTION, he was an out-and-out rogue, simply after a big paydirt. Fairly straightforward ... and nothing complicated about his character as Wyatt. In the play A STEADY RAIN, he was also a domineering person who thought he could provide and protect his family at all costs from any danger. In the process, he falls into a physical, emotional, and mental abyss from which he did not recover - although there is some sentiment that his last act was one of selflessness.
Some people on IMDB imply that Hugh played the Keller character too much over-the-top. I guess it is because they don't know KELLER DOVER !!

Jo I think those comments may be from the one moment after he tries to grab the Paul Dano character in the parking lot and the police are holding him back. He's shouting "no, no, wait" or something and is very agitated. Anyone who read the script will know there is a reason that he carries on the way he does so it will look very different in the actual movie when we see what goes on just before the cops drag him off Paul. People are over simplifying what they see in the trailer and will be quite surprised at the complexity of both the story and the character. Sue |
