No one knows if Hugh has actually been offered or he has accepted the role - but quite a few negative responses to the rumor of his being cast as HADES --
I was hesitant to reply to the reactions but there have been quite a few which were insulting to Hugh, such as this --

Not a rumor for a forthcoming project ... more like a wish list Not also sure if this will be a film musical... or a stage musical www.broadwayworld.com/article/Aaron-Sorkin-Thinks-THE-TRIAL-OF-THE-CHICAGO-7-Could-Be-A-Musical-20201111Haha - so there was a reason why he was in the ZOOM/Chat room Maybe this time, they can now actually successfully work together? But I hope the composer is not Steven Schwartz - he does take his time to complete his work. They did try together to get something done for HOUDINI but it did not push through. Jo

Is this an unlikely subject? Not necessarily. I remember once having some doubt about seeing a musical about the sectarian violence problem in Northern Ireland. But because it was a musical composed by ALWebber, I went to see the musical called A Beautiful Game ( now known as Boys in the Photograph) in London. It focused initially on young men playing football( soccer football, hence the title A Beautiful Game) but became involved in the civil unrest in the divisive religious war ( not too dissimilar to the setting of The Ferryman). It was a beautifully composed dramatic musical! But the saddest musical I have ever seen!
It is the drama in the lives of the people involved that can drive this storyline.

Given the above, which role could suit Hugh? The 2 main characters ( Hayden and Hoffman) were in their early 30's in 1968. Of course on Broadway, age-appropriate casting has not always been followed. On film, unless the character ages in the role, it is more usual to cast them close to the age of the true-life character. Maybe Hugh was simply expressing some wishful thinking Jo

just a rumor! Especially so that Warner Bros has currently adopted a release policy that was contested by Patrick Whitesell in behalf of is clients ( in this case, Reminiscence for Hugh). Also, article implies that it can only happen after Reynolds completes all his many other projects Jo

This one, while it sounds like a good project ( given the quality of BBC fare and the unique appeal of their mysteries/thrillers) but how is it going to happen -- especially at this time of the pandemic? Also, wouldn't the audience be fairly limited? For Brit TV audiences only? So far, Hugh has not done any work for TV ( save the ill-fated Viva Laughlin) -- not sure he would consider this a good career move. Unless it became a film project and poised for distribution in the world market?

Someone commented whether the role should be played by a Brit or an overseas actor.
My replies --
The River has British roots and presumably has British characters --
The Broadway transfer included Brits Laura Donnelly ( from Northern Ireland) and Cush Jumbo.

If pre-prod is in the summer, then filming will likely fall within the same timetable as the start of rehearsals for TMM ( expected around October-November if the musical revival will open for previews on Dec 20, 2021).
We'll see...

On the other hand -- this report ( in French) talks about a summer-date filming schedule --

Doesn't this setting remind you a little of the little-known Jackman film DECEPTION? *a slice of Manhattan life and culture *a film noir atmosphere *a crime story Too bad that the filming plans may not coincide with Hugh's availability Jo
