Anyone been reading about Into The Woods which seems to be a done deal as a movie. I just read the latest casting here I personally don't think it will do well, maybe it's just me. First because I'm so over Johnny Depp. Second because I can't picture anyone as the witch except Bernadette Peters. (probably because that's the version I have) I kind of think Meryl is getting a bit over exposed but not in a good way, similar to Depp. Finally, I don't see there being a big enough audience for it. Maybe Marshall & Sondheim are trying to take advantage of the popularity of Once Upon a Time but I still don't see it doing that well. Any thoughts?? Sue

If I were to go with a witch other than Peters it would be Glenn Close simply because she could sing Children Will Listen and Last Midnight. I don't think Streep has that ability. Also, I love Into the Woods but it is looooooooooong. If they go only Act One for a Disneyish movie, it loses all meaning, but how to cut down almost a four hour show? Very dicey.

I saw the original production on Broadway and it was my very first Sondheim show -- almost a bit of a shocker, given the themes ( I used to refer to it as "fairy tales gone awry") - LOL! I am not sure about the general appeal of this show as a movie project. Sondheim songs are not always melodic ( I actually like his lyric-writing much better) and I wonder if it is only avowed Sondheim fans ( and some theatre fans) who are terribly excited to see this made into a movie. If they think it will have the universal appeal of Les Miserables or the dramatic heft of Sweeney Todd - I think they may be a bit mistaken ( I could be wrong, though). I do have the DVD - but I am not sure if I have actually watched it -- I collect musical theatre filmed productions and one day I will get down to watching it ( again). But I have listened to the duet of Hugh and Debra Byrne of two numbers from the production ( No One Is Alone/ Children Will Listen). www.youtube.com/watch?v=W14-bH2fWpoJo

It looks like Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine may be cast in the movie, too. Hmm...it seems that after the success of Les Miserables, everyone wants to do a movie musical now?
Does each one have some background in the theatre, and musical theatre in particular?

Other than James Corden, I do not like any of these casting choices. As to the newest additions, it's just getting worse IMHO. Scroll down for video of Jake singing OK, it's SNL and it's a joke - but still, this does not strike me as a good idea.
