While reading the reactions of the fans from the forum of SUPERHEROHYPE when they attended the Fan Event on Times Square -- I thought maybe we should already have a separate thread for the fans/public reactions to the movie itself!
I'm seeing the movie for the first time tomorrow - that would be around 6:00 am EST, Thursday July 25 (we're 12 hours ahead at this time of year).

A bunch of us went to the NY premiere yesterday. We were all warmly greeted by Hugh, which was wonderful. I truly enjoyed the film: it's visceral, violent, funny in spots and there's lots of Hugh eye-candy, of course. It's also an affecting, haunting drama. Very well done. I hope it does extremely well at the b.o. You only need stay for the first couple of minutes of credits to see the scene that sets up DoFP.
Hugh answered fans' questions in person atop a slightly raised stage. All "special event" ticketholders also received a Wolverine T-shirt, foam claws with the 7/26/13 date on it and a badge bearing the inscription, "I saw it first, bub." LOL. Fun evening.

It was great to see everyone at the screening, and especially Hugh! As usual, he was warm and charming with the fans. I loved the movie! Loved the exotic setting. Great story and great action. I thought it was much better than the first Wolverine film, even though I liked that one too. James Mangold's direction was beautiful.

Ellen, Annette, and Cheryl - Thanks for sharing smiley-gen126 I have posted a video of the event ( including a brief shot of the people in the queue and what was happening at the lobby) -- it is on the Wolverine Publicity Thread -- maybe you may want to check out if you were caught on candid camera ) Ellen - was that you and Sue who were being bussed by Hugh outisde the David Letterman Show? This post from IMDB ( known for having the most number of trolls ) is worth noting -- Have you noticed -- all the reviews generally praise Hugh's performance (and muscles) and I have yet to read a single one which accused him of phoning his performance in! Jo

Just got back from my first viewing --
*There were three cinemas simultaneously showing the movie
*Point of interest at the lobby of the cinemas ( this was at an entertainment complex) was a fairly large showcase/vitrine of various Wolverine action figures and collectibles ( there must have been around 40 pieces - from very huge to small ones, some signed by Hugh (engraved) or identified as "Hugh Jackman". NOT FOR SALE -- look only! But you can take photos -- which some teenagers were doing!
On the movie --
WOW!
There's a great sense of the epic in the story and at the same time there is an intimacy about his personal journey to rediscover himself!
It's a drama, a sci-fiction delight, and an action movie! It's romantic (A man's journey especially when seeking something about himself is always romantic, Japan as the backdrop adds to the mystery and enigma, and the relationships of Logan with women of different backgrounds and personal qualities are part of the story's emotional appeal), it's intriguing ( when getting deeper into the story and alien culture), and it's visually breathtaking and the heart throbs at the sounds of the battles!
I like fast-paced movies, with great story-telling, and fascinating characters -- and this movie suits the bill! I never disliked Origins (as some fans do) and had that been better edited and not focused on the mutant rainfall at the end, I was reminded of that movie with THE WOLVERINE, in the tone and romantic appeal of discovering a hero who is someone not of the same template as other screen heroes.
Mangold and his creative team have delivered! Hugh, as always, marshalls his dramatic, romantic, and manly appeal to further enhance the Wolverine persona and admirable qualities! I wish the Oscars nominating committee would seriously consider roles of this nature when they look a the year's best!
An excellent movie of its genre... although it also represents great screen drama, with a sensitive character portrayal which sets it apart from other action heroes screen stereoptypes!
I'm seeing it again tomorrow!
PS: I am intrigued as to what happens now to his bone claws! Also, how come nobody said anything about the bathtub - LOL!

As with XMO:W, I'll bet the more interesting bits of the forced bath scene were left on the cutting room floor for being too revealing, LOL. At the very end, it looks like we're about to see a hint of what that Japanese spa goer saw, but of course the scene then ends abruptly.

Or, since that was spoken, he could have been saying, "the Jacked Hugh-man," very similar to Hugh's drama school nickname, Jack Human. Ellen

I am going to see it tomorrow for second time. I really liked it that much. Yukio character was great. Both of them were great, for the first time actresses. Very natural. Oh, and the bath tub scene...*sigh*

I saw it again, the second time!
Of course, it made a few things clearer ( which whizzed by me in my first screening of the movie).
But I was struck by how deep his speaking voice has now become -- or has it been there all the time, even when he sometimes speaks with a higher-pitched voice in other performances ( onstage usually) ? Although someone has once noted how wide his vocal range ( his physical speaking voice)is.
I also appreciated how subtle some of his acting choices has become. The scene where the Silver Samurai was sucking out the Wolverine mutation gene or stem cells through his broken adamantium claws was such an admirable show of acting range on his face! The consternation, the anger, the physical pain, the hopelessness, the resignation, all the emotions that showed how he was reacting to the most powerful moment in the movie -- excellent acting from the man who could not now be replaced as The Wolverine!
He does have a way with portraying subtle scenes of humor ( even the " I felt violated" muttered after he was cleaned up in a bathtub was so amusingly delivered) - his gruff manner makes the funny moment even more humorous!
Physically-speaking -- Hugh seems to have become even more manly over the years! :o But I wonder when the next time we will see his face without facial hair in a movie will be ?
Also, it was very apparent how excellent the fight choreography for this movie was! The thrilling scenes were very well executed.
Re the ending -- did it leave room for a sequel - maybe more adventures of Wolverine and his sidekick -LOL!
Something from the updated BIOGRAPHY channel hourlong feature on Hugh -- someone said that Hugh "is very old-school Hollywood" when it comes to acting because his range is so wide and so versatile. The versatility is all there for any kind of role - from action to romcom to drama to musicals and even to arthouse!
But it goes even beyond that -- as he belongs to both film and stage! Hopefully, he is now getting even more interesting script offers. I wonder what kind of professional skills he will be challenged with if and when Houdini comes along?
LOL- I am trying to finagle someone to see it -- so I can see it a third time! Wish me luck giggle
PS: I wonder why he has chosen not to be named as a Producer for the movie. I double-checked the credits ( when I saw the movie the second time around). He's worked so hard doing some producer duties - looking for a director, working out the tax rebate to make the budget more acceptable, helping out in the casting, and I have even read that he threw a party for the cast and the crew before they started filming in Sydney.

I was surprised he wasn´t in the credits as a producer either. John Palermo was there instead.
As for the subtle acting - look at the after credit scene, the moment he professor arrives - Hugh´s face there has all shades of emotions. I think he not only gets better with age physically but also acting-wise.

You'd think with such a (sometimes too) zealous crowd, the opening weekend should have seen at least $85 million. Go figure.

Some articles attribute this lesser opening to memories of the disappointing X-Men Origins: Wolverine film. Perhaps word of mouth will help if THE WOLVERINE remains in theaters long enough to bolster the box office.
