With mere days until Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine in “DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE”, I wanted to share this weird little story from the vaults of Matty’s Weird Little Stories.

Yep. It’s true. I was there the night Hugh Jackman was hired to play Wolverine. I don’t mean I was there, like I was in the building. I mean I was there. Right there. An arm’s length away when it happened. And I videotaped it.

In 1999 I was hired by X-Men Producer Tom DeSanto as Videographer for the brain-trust of the first X-Men film. A brain-trust that included, Tom, Director Bryan Singer, Screenwriter David Hayter and Associate Producer Kevin Feige.

I filmed everything. One hundred and eighty hours of footage by the end of the movie. It was my first film gig, and that tale in itself could be a book of its own. It was amazing.

Because of my proximity to that group, I became a trusted member of the creative inner circle and because we were all nerds of about the same age, we quickly became an inseparable group of friends. Even though I was as green as green gets, I was actually listened to and my opinion mattered within the group. An incredibly rare experience for a new kid on a film set, especially today.

When I came aboard the film, a young Scottish actor named Dougray Scott had been cast as Wolverine. At the time, the only thing I knew of him was playing opposite Drew Barrymore in a fantasy romance movie called “Ever After: A Cinderella Story”. Weird choice, but as we got underway in Toronto he was in Australia playing the villain in Mission Impossible 2. His star was clearly on the rise and if he could be a bad guy in a Tom Cruise movie, I figured the transformation into a mean-ass little mutant anti-hero wouldn’t be nearly the stretch I imagined.

It was only a few days into shooting that I started to sense that something was up with the conspicuously absent Dougray. I’d see new shooting schedules floating around, I’d hear rumblings of pushing his start date as deep into the shoot as possible. It was clear that his time on Mission Impossible was being extended, and that was no good for us.
With little other information to go on and time quickly running out, the director sent our Costume Designer Louise Mingenbach down to Austraila under the guise of conducting a costume fitting with Dougray. In fact, the trip was not merely a fitting, it was a spy mission to find out exactly what was going on down there.

What she discovered was not good.
The delay was much more than their shoot going long or scheduling conflicts. Dougray had been badly injured in a motorcycle accident. Not only was he unable to fit into the stunt harnesses that he would need to wear for the massive amount of stunt and wire work, but he had also lost a significant amount of weight and was down to a spindly one hundred and fifty pounds, a far cry from the three hundred pounds of the ferocious Canadian, Wolverine. Within a few hours, knowing the jig was up, the tearful call came from Dougray. He was forfeiting the role.

And we were fucked.


The offers started going out. One went to Mel Gibson. He wanted twenty million. It was not that kind of movie. He was crossed off the list. The role was offered to Russell Crowe. He turned it down. Gladiator was coming out around the same time as us and he didn’t want two of his own movies competing at the box office. He was crossed off the list. Then the audition apes started coming in. We would sit in the trailer watching tape after agonizing tape as despair set in deeper and deeper. That list was thrown in the trash as the horrible realization set in.

We had no star. We had no Wolverine.

From amidst the madness, despair and chaos appeared Producer Lauren Schuler Donner. “Remember, there was this guy I saw on stage in London? He was in Oklahoma. He was number thirty on our list or something. We should give him another look”.
This was Hugh Jackman.

Without any other options, Bryan agreed to see him. Within a couple of days, Hugh was flown to Canada to meet Bryan in person and read for the part. He arrived at the production office at Toronto’s Shoreline Studios and after shooting for the day was completed, he was ushered into Lauren’s office with Bryan to videotape his Wolverine audition.
And he blew it.

Maybe it was the flight. Maybe it was nerves. Maybe he just didn’t get it. The only thing for certain is that the performance was just… underwhelming. Everyone, including Hugh, knew it was over for the unknown Australian actor. That night, Tom and Kevin, who at the time were the lowest producers in the food chain, took Hugh out for his condolence dinner while despair set in back at the office among the higher-ups.

The next day, at Lauren’s behest, Kevin picked Hugh up from his hotel for the ride to the airport and his flight back into obscurity. As they approached Toronto’s Pearson International (or YYZ for the Rush fans out there) Kevin’s phone rang. It was Bryan. He’d had a realization.

“Turn the car around and bring him back. I want to put him on film with some real actors.”

That day we were shooting Jean Gray’s speech to the US Senate in the Council Chamber at Toronto City Hall. It was a crucial scene. The opening to the first act of the film. David and Bryan agonized over the wording of her speech and Senator Kelly’s rebuttal. It was so important that this scene worked as it set up the entire playing field for the X-Men story. What were mutants? What were they doing? Were they good? Were they bad? How was the government supposed to legislate the Mutant Registration Act? By God it was important. The First Assistant Director, Lee Cleary was also under immense pressure trying to find a way to back-load the schedule with Wolverine’s work so the casting search could continue. It was my first taste of real movie stress.

Suddenly, Bryan appeared at my side.
“He’s here. Come with me.”

Bryan and I peered around the corner of a trailer at basecamp. There he was. On a phone call, pacing around outside the Hair and Make Up trailer. I zoomed in with my videocamera to get a closer look. He was wearing a denim shirt, a vest and brown cowboy boots. He looked like Outback Royalty.


Bryan looked at me, “Honestly, what do you think?”

“I don’t know man,” I shrugged, “Wolverine is short, ugly and stupid. This dude is tall, handsome and well spoken. Plus, I’ve never heard of him. He’s like… Who Jackman?”


Hugh hung around the basecamp all day as we continued to shoot back at City Hall. Keep in mind that in 1999, it was still the Wild West in the film business. We’d shoot fourteen, fifteen or even sixteen hour days unfettered and this day was no exception. We wrapped shooting around 2am and wheeled a camera, a couple lights and two cheap folding chairs into the hallway outside the council chamber and called the cast to set. Anna Paquin and Hugh Jackman arrived a few moments later.


The screentest began.

And he was a different guy.

He nailed it. You could tell there was still a sense of “There’s no way I’m getting this part” in his head, but once he sat down with Famke and then Anna, there was no question that this guy understood the part and had a whole pile of talent we hadn’t seen before. Could Bryan have actually found his Wolverine?

I was videotaping the audition next to Cinematographer Tom Sigel’s camera while the rest of the grown-ups watched it unfold on the Producer monitor down the hall. Bryan however, had taken a small, single monitor and found a secluded corner in the building where he could watch on his own and focus without distraction. During the audition, a young City Hall Security Guard who had no idea that Bryan was the director and in the midst of quite possibly the most crucial decision of the film, started rubbernecking the monitor over Bryan's shoulder for a better look. The kid had no clue that he was about to play a significant part in the next twenty five years of film history.

“Hey. Is this the guy they’re getting to play Wolverine?” he asked.

Bryan looked over his shoulder at the kid, “I don’t know yet. What do you think?”

The kid took a beat, then said "He’s pretty fuckin’ cool.”

And that's when Bryan made his decision.

A few minutes later the audition concluded and I stood with Kevin, David, Tom and Producer Ralph Winter as Bryan approached. Without a trace of doubt in his voice, he looked to Ralph and said, “I'd like to do this. I can make it work. I want to hire this guy.”

“Are you sure?”, Ralph replied.

“Yes, I’m sure.”

“You know, we still have a couple weeks and could still find a name. There are a few more guys we could go out to.”


Bryan took a beat, thought for second and looked to Ralph.

“Fuck it. Let’s make him a star.”


His words hit me like an Adamantium bus. I lowered my video camera and marvelled at the moment. So this is how it happens. This is how someone goes from nothing to movie star in one second. All it takes is one person to say those words. One person to say "Fuck it. Let's make him a star."

I followed Bryan and the team to find Hugh milling about the set as the crew packed up the camera and lights around him. Bryan extended his hand to the actor. “Hugh. I’d like to make this work. Let’s do it.”


Everything you’ve heard about Hugh Jackman is absolutely true. He is quite literally the best human being in Hollywood. His reaction to being offered the role may have stemmed from disbelief or more likely, a deep sense of honor and loyalty to people in his life. Whatever it was, it was NOT what I expected to hear.

Hugh sort of shrugged his shoulders and grimaced a little as he said, “You know I’d love to, but my mate back in Australia is doing this little indie picture I promised I’d do for him, and I don’t know if I can leave him hanging.”


In my head I screamed, “Shut up you idiot and just say YES! They want you to be Wolverine for god’s sake!!”

Ralph, in his veteran calm and utterly professional way just smiled and patted Hugh on the shoulder, “Don’t worry. We’ll take care of your friend’s picture”.


To this day I have no idea what that statement meant but I’m sure the friend in Australia was just fine with it because the next time I saw Hugh Jackman was two weeks later in the lunch room of the Hamilton train station where he was rehearsing the Sabertooth fight sequence with Tyler Mane...

... and he was Wolverine.

The director posted on his Instagram a commissioned comic book cover from the legendary Marvel comic artist, Joe Quesada which is very reminiscent of the 80’s X-Men comic books. So, Is The MCU Keeping Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine After His Deadpool Outing?

The storyline of Deadpool and Wolverine was going to give us a lot of clues about the future of both characters in the MCU, and for a minute there, it looked like there wasn’t going to be a future at all.

Spoilers follow.

At the climax of the film it seemed like both Deadpool and Wolverine were going to sacrifice themselves to stop Cassandra Nova’s erasure of all universes, but super-healers that they are, they made it through.

The film ends with Deadpool bringing in Logan to his circle of friends, with a special request to pull Laura/X-23 from the void and into their world. Her, Logan and Deadpool are all alive, and that means they can have a future. And they almost certainly will, given that this movie just broke every single record for an R-rated movie in history.


As much as Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool is fun and I’m sure he’ll get a fourth film and maybe even an Avengers supporting character invite, I think the larger question is about Wolverine given that A) Hugh Jackman has had the role for almost 25 years with zero other actors playing the character and B) we are about to enter the mutant MCU era after this current one which has switched gears from Kang to, somehow, Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom.

At the bare minimum, I don’t think there’s any way that Wolverine avoids showing up in one or both Avengers movies. Maybe not the new Doomsday one, but almost certainly the second, Secret Wars. That seems very likely to introduce the X-Men in some form, given how core they are to the story in the comics, and with that, well, Wolverine.


But as I’ve said before, I don’t think there’s any way that Jackman is recast. I previously said the only one who could take up the mantle would be Dafne Keen’s X-23, who becomes actual Wolverine in the comics eventually, but after Deadpool and Wolverine, I think it has to stay Jackman. And of course that was also a running joke in the film, with Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool breaking the fourth wall and saying that Jackman will be forced to play the role until he’s 90.


It's a joke but I mean, is it? Jackman is 55 and looks like that, a pitch-perfect Logan retaining his superhero physique and still operating at the top of his game. He clearly enjoyed stepping back into the role, was enormously successful doing so both action and drama-wise, and his movie is probably going to set the all-time R-rated box office record. Why on earth would he quit now?

The way Deadpool and Wolverine may be setting this up is that Logan, who lost his entire team in his own universe, could redeem himself by mentoring a new crop of X-Men, alternate universe, younger versions of his old team. Obviously he would not want to do this, but I can see him being convinced to be their gruff drill sergeant, whipping the mutants into fighting shape. We’d clearly still get a Charles Xavier at some point, but it’s easy to see Logan thrust into this mentorship role when the MCU’s mutant era begins. And by then, Jackman will just be what, 58? 60? No problem.

Given how all this played out I would be shocked if Jackman is eager to just quit the part entirely all over again, and you know Marvel is dying to keep him around if these are the box office numbers he can pull. One catch is that he’d probably be forced to return to PG-13 land after both Logan and this film, which is a shame, given how awesome it was to see him fully unleashed.

I think Jackman’s staying, but how exactly remains to be seen.

It should depend on Hugh Jackman -- how many more times he would want to act out the role!

Marvel Studios does not have much of a choice now -- the fans have spoken, the Box Office has produced the rssults, and Hugh Jackman's identification with the role is even more precise and better-praised!
