Hugh Jackman to Get Zurich Festival’s Golden Icon Honor


Jackman will travel to Zurich to receive his award.

His new film “Prisoners,” co-starring Jake Gyllenhall, will have a gala premiere in Zurich.


BERLIN – Hugh Jackman will receive the Golden Icon Award from the Zurich International Film Festival next month, the festival announced Friday.


The honor, which in previous years has gone to Sean Penn, Michael Douglas and Morgan Freeman, will be presented to Jackman in Zurich on Sept. 28.

The festival will also hold a gala screening for Jackman’s latest film, the thriller Prisoners directed by Denis Villeneuve and co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

“Hugh Jackman is in a class by himself as a multi-talented entertainer with a global following,” said Zurich festival director Karl Spoerri. “There is nothing he can’t do and he proves this time and time again with every project he’s involved in. We’re honored to recognize his brilliant career at the Zurich Film Festival.”

The Oscar-nominated and Golden Globe and Tony Award winning actor is perhaps most famous for his portrayal of comic book hero Wolverine in the X-Men and Wolverine film franchises. The latest of the film, The Wolverine, has already grossed more than $350 million worldwide. The Australian actor will revive the sharp-clawed superhero character in X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is set for a May 2014 release.

Jackman has also wowed audiences with his singing chops, both on Broadway, where he last year received a special Tony Award for his contribution to the theater community, and on screen in Tom Hooper’s Oscar-nominated Les Miserables. Jackman’s role as Jean Valijean earned him a Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy/musical and his first-ever best actor Oscar nomination.

In Prisoners, Jackman plays a man forced to take matters into his own hands after his young daughter and her best friend disappear without a trace. Viola Davis and Melissa Leo also star.

The 9th annual Zurich International Film Festival runs Sept. 26-Oct. 6.

The 61st edition of the San Sebastian Festival will present its Donostia Award to one of today's best known film stars, Hugh Jackman. The actor will receive the Award on September 27 prior to the special screening of the latest work in which he plays the lead, Prisoners.

Hugh Jackman is an Academy Award® nominated, Golden Globe -and Tony Award- winning performer who has made an impression on audiences of all ages with his multi-hyphenate career persona, as successful on stage in front of live crowds as he is on film. From his award-winning turn on Broadway as the 1970s singer/songwriter Peter Allen, to his metal claw-wielding Wolverine in the lucrative "X-Men" franchise, Jackman has proven to be one of the most versatile actors of our time.

The Australian native made his first major U.S. film appearance as Wolverine in the first installment of the X-Men series, a role he reprised in the enormously successful X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand. He then starred as the title character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a prequel to the popular series which grossed an outstanding $85 million domestically in its first weekend of release. This summer, audiences once again went to see Jackman in the popular role in the next chapter titled The Wolverine, which was number one at the box office in its opening weekend and which has, to date, grossed over $300 million worldwide. Warner Bros seems to be doing an excellent job of raising their movie's and star's yearend awards quotient, by going the festival circuit route? The timing of the completion of PRISONERS is perfect, to catch the fall festival circuit ( usually the precursors of Oscar potentials)!

Wishful thinking?? Hope not

Btw, last year, Warner Bros's hopeful for awards was ARGO! The buzz is that they are going to promote Cuaron's GRAVITY (sci-fi with George C and Sandra B) and Villeneuve's PRISONERS.

Both films are garnering excellent advance notice. I wonder if WB will be forced to ultimately put all its chips behind just one.

Maybe it is just me -- but the sudden slew of special honors given to Hugh in relation to the festival screenings of PRISONERS seems to indicate that maybe the performance they had seen of Hugh has convinced WB that this is one excellent bet for acting honors!

One of the early forecasts ( S.Feinberg, if I am not mistaken) who seemed very unlikely to have already seen the movie before his forecasts were put online - puts Hugh as a longshot for Best Actor and Jake as a longshot for Best Supporting Actor. Ditto for Melissa Leo and Viola Davis for supporting roles. The early assessment is not significant to me because it is guesswork, but putting Hugh as bet for Best Actor and Jake as Best Supporting Actor seems to say that WB may already be positioning its actors for their most Oscar-likely considerations.

I can't believe we may have to go through another tense hoping and praying period! LOL!

Some pundits are already saying that the likely frontrunners so far are Tom Hanks, Christian Bale, Leo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey and Forrest Whittaker. Other names in the mix: Michael B. Jordan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Robert Redford, and Hugh is a "longshot." Oy, here we go again.

Zurich is the model of Swiss efficiency and is very old world in look!

San Sebastian is a picturesque Basque coastal town in Spain - not too far from Biarritz, France and Bilbao in Spain ( where the famous Frank Gehry- Guggenheim Museum branch is located).

He is receiving the two awards to coincide with the festival showing of "Prisoners" one day after another. Will Hugh and Deb have time to play tourists? The Gehry museum might interest them because it is a very modernistic ( like a monolithic sculpture) all- glass wonder. Zurich - there is the lake or the mountains and yummy Swiss handmade chocolates! Although foodie-wise, I think the Basque/Spanish cuisine is really tops ( best pistou soup in Biarritz!)

PRISONERS

How far would you go to protect your family? Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) is facing every parent´s worst nightmare. His six-year-old daughter, Anna, is missing, together with her young friend, Joy, and as minutes turn to hours, panic sets in. The best lead is a dilapidated RV that had earlier been parked on their street.
