Last night's rerun of Franklin and Bash mentioned "Real Steel" both Hugh's movie and a supposed porn version as well as referring to Hugh by name and a variation on the name by the porn star (euphemisms R Us  ) Unfortunately, this movie was supposed to have been ordered in 2009 and Real Steel came out in 2011 but still nice that it is creeping into scripts. |

I've just watched the live coverage of the Grand Prix Formula One race at Silverstone (UK), won by Australian Mark Webber. I had exactly the same thought as this tweet --

Watching the Olympic opening ceremony live. Its just after 6am Sydney time.
Hope Hugh doesn't fall off his treadmill at the gym when he hears the music from "Australia". It's about 5 mins in from the start (sorry-can't remember its name but it's an iconic British piece).
Brought tears to my eyes. Much watch the movie again.

So far -- what a great show of Britain's historical, cultural and social heritage!! What an amazing display of Britain's theatrical talent and history!!
Very evocative...and very easy to connect to! But I wonder how it is received everywhere - as it turned inwards ( British history and society) in its overall theme?

We here in the U.S. were the only country not to have it televised live! >  I DVR'd it and only tuned in last night and watched the end with Paul McCartney (he got all choked up at the beginning of Hey Jude, but then persevered!) I heard about the bits with the Queen and Daniel Craig--looking forward to watching it. |

From the US wish it had been televised live, but guess the advertisers had to get their pound of flesh - Thoroughly enjoyed it, particularly the part dedicated to British children's literature. Also, rather liked the "take that!" attitude about the National Health Service ... "We've had it for 60 years what's your problem." |

Jo,
It was played during the last scene of the movie, just prior to the credits, where Nullah returns to his grandfather with the Drover and Sarah looking on.
During the Olympic ceremony it was played whilst Kenneth Branagh was acting as Brunel.

The piece of music mentioned is from the Enigma Variations, Op. 36, Variation No. 9, and is called 'NIMROD' written by Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934), a famous English composer. It is used a lot in military ceremonies in Britain especially those of the Royal Air Force, particularly on Remembrance Sunday. Being related to an RAF pilot who, thankfully, survived all of his tours of duty, it is of special significance to me.

Well, it would seem that Jerry Seinfeld is more popular than Hugh. I tried for a full hour and a half to get through on the phone this morning for one of Jerry's fall shows in the NYC boroughs, and all I ever got was a busy signal. When I finally got through, I learned all tix had been sold within a few minutes. And here I'd thought getting tix to Hugh's shows was rough!

Remember Dakota Goyo ( aka Max in REAL STEEL) -- he is busy as a bee these days! LOL - the younger version of Russell Crowe in NOAH. I think he did better as Hugh's son in Real Steel  ... I am biased, of course! I wonder if Hugh referred this talented boy actor to Russell and Darren Aronofsky...and also his signing with WME as his talent agency?? Jo |

Wasn't sure where to put this, but Jo, I was wondering where you are in regards to the flood last week??? Have you been affected where you are? One of the employees I work with has a husband over there (in Manila) on business and the flood happened while he was there! He was supposed to fly out last Friday to be here for their anniversary and all flights got cancelled because of the flood. He won't be able to return for another few days. He sent videos of the devastation there. I am sorry to hear this has happened. Are you okay?  Just concerned. |

We are used to monsoon weather because our 7100 islands lie in the wet tropics! But this has been very unusual -- with two weeks of heavy non-stop rains! The consequence is the heavy flooding in Metro Manila and other areas in the major island. Can you believe that the USA embassy which has a huge location by Manila Bay has had to close for a few days because it was also severely flooded??
But it is both nature and man-made reasons which contributed to the watery onslaught. It looks like climate changes may have already raised the ocean's water level ( we are surrounded by two major bodies of water - the China sea and the Pacific Ocean) and causing difficulties in coastal areas while man-made reasons ( such as forest denudation) contribute to the sudden flood onslaughts.
I have had no problems, other than a postponed dental appointment - I finally saw him this week. Plus the spotty TV transmissions which have caused my missing some of the Olympic events. But very, very trivial, compared to what my countrymen have suffered!
But it is almost depressing to hear the heavy raindrops dropping on the rooftops for days and days and days.
We are in the middle of a typhoon now ( the difference between a typhoon and monsoon rains is the presence of winds in the first) but it is not as bad -- however, if the two combine, it is even going to be worse. Hopefully, it is supposed to be gone by tomorrow - I do have sister who is flying home from the USA via Japan tonight, though.
Longterm solutions will not be easy ( very costly infrastructure such as more huge dams in the mountainous areas to control the water flow from the mountains and relocating people who build their houses near flood-prone areas) -- but I guess it has to be done over the longterm.
Btw, we run through the alphabet ( averaging 26) when naming the typhoons in one year. But this is the first time we have had such a terrible monsoon season, so it has remained unnamed - we just call it "Monsoon" ( actually "Habagat" in our language)! Hopefully, it stays that way.
But I guess having such beautiful islands and fairly glorious weather in general has also a price in where our islands are located.

I'm so glad to hear you're okay where you are! I have seen photos and videos of the devastation being endured by your countrymen and my heart goes out to everyone there. When I first heard about it, I thought immediately of you and hoped you were okay! I cannot believe that even the US Embassy had to close for a few days!
I pray the heavy rain stops as soon as possible and does not worsen and that God will bring swift renewal to Manila! I will be praying for both this, and for your sister's safe return tonight.
Please keep us posted on any further developments!

Can't believe we are on a kind of watch again - a tsunami alert, this time.
Breaking news - 7.9 Magnitude ( now downgraded to 7.6)earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, off one of our islands. Earthquake occured in the so-called Philippine Trench, supposedly second only to the Marianas Trench for being the deepest part of the ocean in the world. Tsunami alert is up to Japan and down to Indonesia ( now updated only to the Philippines, Indonesia and Palau)
Manila is far ( 700 km away) and we personally did not feel it. But it is scary because we have never really experienced a major tsunami. Hope the waves stay calm!
