Thanks, Sue, for your kindness...and to all those who would express their sympathy in this manner. You are all very kind!

May I also suggest Shelter Box. They are already on the ground providing shelter for those devastated by the typhoon and are one of the most ethical charities I've ever used for these huge events shelterbox.org/

Yes, I did. Although not a great musical (the score is only so-so), it has spectacle and warmth, a rare combo. Tale-teller salesman Norbert Leo Butz and his long-suffering (and loving) wife Kate Baldwin had wonderful chemistry together. As always, their acting and singing were top notch. The set pieces were gorgeous, imaginative and whimsical. My favorite bit featured huge, dancing elephant butts, as choreographed by Susan Stroman. So memorable and delightful! There was even a mermaid "swimming" near the orchestra pit. Bobby Steggert was more or less wasted in a surprisingly small role as Butz's son; even so, he was quite effective, too. If only the score had been better, or if certain scenes hadn't appeared to be all over the place instead of more focused, I think this show could have been a hit, even without household-name stars. You can still get tickets, you know. It's not closing until Dec. 29. It's worth seeing.

Yes, and then to Michael C. Hall. So much can change in the multi-year course of prepping a stage musical.

Jo, Quick question...I've seen the typhoon in the Philippines referred to as both Haiyan and Yolanda, which is correct? Or is it Tagalog vs English? Thanks Sue

Sue,
The international name is Haiyan, but we have our own naming system for the typhoons/tropical depressions which pass our way. Haiyan is called Yolanda and was the 24th weather disturbance to have passed this way. There was another more minor one which followed it and was called Zoraida, which thankfully was a much weaker one. That completes the alphabet and the next one will adopt a name which starts with A. CNN has described Haiyan/Yolanda as more powerful than Katrina and Sandy combined.

They consider it a level 3 disaster which is their highest level. Anyone interested in donating to Unicef (helps children) can read up on it here: fieldnotes.unicefusa.org/2013/11/typhoon-haiyan-relief-update-unicef-emergency-response.htmlSue

Thank you, Hugh Jackman smiley-signs101
I just saw Tim Costello, President of World Vision, being interviewed here. It seems World Vision has had a Philippine base for sometime now because of poverty and disaster relief issues here. Thanks to Mr. Costello, too, for his concern and personal involvement in the efforts here. smiley-signs101
I remember when he accompanied Hugh and Deb in their trip to Ethiopia to meet Dukale.

I'd like to share something really inspiring: I missed 60 minutes last Sunday, but they had the following: a community sprang up around a garbage dump at Cateura, near Asuncion, Paraguay. Now they have a Youth Orchestra... who play instruments made from recycled trash. Amazing. www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50159349nThey have a Facebook page (in Spanish): www.facebook.com/orquestadeinstrumentosreciclados.cateuraThey just played at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, no less, on November 6. Exemplary human beings bringing hope and beauty to the people of one of so many forgotten places. It makes me wonder just how far we humans COULD have come at this point in time if instead of trying to overpower each other and creating so much waste WE ALL PULLED TOGETHER. Humbling. Alma

Hugh going to be on today show this am! Was he on it, foxie? I've seen it mentioned a couple of places now, but I was watching the first half of that show and saw them chit-chatting about it, but I didn't catch on that he was actually going to be there. I'm mad at myself for turning if off, if he was on.

The only media message from Hugh ( apart from his social media announcements) was a brief VARIETY phone interview ( featured elsewhere on this board). Understandably, Hugh was spending time with his medical team and his family after the surgical procedure. And resting...

Are you old enough to remember Abbott and Costello's famous baseball sketch? Well, there's really a guy named "Hu" now, so someone updated the bit with lots of other current, and in this case appropriately funny, players' names. It's a long one. You can read it here....and if you prefer the "classic" version - there are a few variations on YouTube - - ...and while looking for that, I found a "sequel" with Jimmy Fallon, Billy Crystal and Jerry Seinfeld.

I think the sketch originated in the A&C movie, THE GAY 90s. I used to watch the repeats of their old TV series every day after school and always looked forward to the "Who's on first" bit. I remember being surprised when I heard slightly saltier language used in a replaying of that classic bit done on a radio program. Suddenly, "I don't give a darn" became "I don't give a damn." Ellen

The local Fox5 station ran a segment in its late-afternoon news about local celeb-owned restaurants. It featured a nice segment on Hugh's Laughing Man coffee places in downtown Manhattan. I'm hoping they'll repeat it on the late-evening news.
