No Hugh at golden globes? I guess Valerie will move this post (and yours) over to a more appropriate location, but yeah, Foxie, I'm also disappointed Hugh will likely not be at the Golden Globes. Doesn't the previous year's winner usually get invited to present, like in the Oscars? He's too busy too far away... not even a video appearance? Alma There! We're in the right place now. Thanks, Valerie!

If Fey and Poehler were not hosting, I would probably not watch the Golden Globes. But I think they are very funny, very adept hosts who deserve to be seen and appreciated, so I'll be turning in--all the while grumbling about the absence of Hugh and PRISONERS on the ballot.

There goes my Bizarro-world fantasy in which Hugh sneaks in out of nowhere to cop a Best Actor nom. Didn't happen. I still don't understand the love for AMERICAN HUSTLE. Annoys me that Bale & Cooper are nominated again--especially Bale getting a Best Actor nod over Hugh??? Unbelievable. By the way, Will Forte in NEBRASKA and Jake G. in you-know-what blew Cooper out of the water, IMHO. At this point I wouldn't mind a win by either Bruce Dern or Chiwetel Ejiofor. Re Hugh, as they say in the sports world, "Wait 'til next year!" Ellen

Only nine nominees for Best Picture?
Congrats to Roger Deakins -- that is a well-deserved nod!

Amazing that people are still talking about the controversial points ( mainly the kidnapping and torture acts committed by Keller...the unconventional ending...and a few other interesting plot points ) on the IMDB board and how Twitter is still sending out messages about the film being a true cinematic surprise!
Too bad the AMPAS chose to ignore the movie, when it can only fill up 9 of the available 10 nominee spots for BEST PICTURE <rant>... Instead of talking about which film really brought home some mental provocation and amazing filmmaking ( only nod was for Deakins's cinematography) at this time that the Oscars are about to air, media is gushing about the list of presenters and how Jennifer Lawrence is concerned that her " who- are- you- wearing" gown will not fit smiley-rolleyes010

The only nod to Hugh's presence in PRISONERS at last night's Oscars was a nanosecond of him as Dover during Deakins' cinematography nomination. So now the awards season is officially over. Let's hope that next year's THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH (if it's released this year), PAN and CHAPPIE are hits critically and commercially.

I didn't watch the show ( except the Opening number by Ellen -- sorry, too bland, as if she was simply hosting her TV show...and caught Anne's winner presentation for BSA) but according to some posts on the DOFP board on SHH, there was a clip of movie heroes. I saw the YT upload and saw two Hugh nanoseconds from The Wolverine - the one with the Ninja arrows and the train sequence, if I am not mistaken.
The over-lobbied and some people dub as overrated "American Hustle" had the unenviable record of winning zero out of 9 nominations.
I also read a mention that Catherine Martin ( Baz Luhrmann's wife) won her third and fourth Oscars ( this time for Great Gatsby costumes and production design). Too bad her meticulous work in "Australia" was not one of those four wins ( she also won 2 for Moulin Rouge).

I thought it was an enjoyable show. My criteria? I stayed awake and didn't do much channel surfing during the commercials. Ellen did a good, serviceable job. She is a likeable person, and that came across. I have accepted the fact that no one will ever match my memories of shows hosted by Bob Hope or Johnny Carson - definitely my two fave "veteran" multi-year hosts. Hugh would have been preferable, of course. The worst was the year they had a (mismatched) "pair" of hosts.
Yes, two fleeting glimpses of Hugh as mentioned. Prisoners didn't stand a chance next to Gravity, which was walking away with most of the more technical awards. Prisoners just wasn't an "Oscar-type" film. I'm pleased, though surprised, it got any nominations at all. I'm thrilled that 12 Years A Slave won for Best Picture. If Gravity had taken Best Picture I would have had a fit. (It was this year's Argo for me. . . which BTW I saw again on cable recently and enjoyed far more than I did in the theater, but I still don't think it deserved Best Picture.)
The big plus for me this year was the In Memoriam segment. FIRST they did the montage and THEN Bette Midler sang. The last few years I've found it very annoying as the director felt compelled to switch back and forth between the screen and the live performer. This was an improvement, style-wise IMHO. BUT... other than the nominated songs, I don't think there were any other performances - were there? One extra song - "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" - a nice, melodic rendition that didn't stray too far from "classic" expectations, over a montage from the film. Judy's children were in attendance for this 75th anniversary tribute to The Wizard of OZ.
Did I doze off and miss the big production numbers?
I didn't watch any of the pre-show silliness. I find it a waste of time... and I'm so sick of "Who are you wearing?" that I could spit. Mentioning such things in print or in a post-show commentary would suffice for me. And there are far too many interviewers jostling to accost the actors. I think it takes away from the "glamor" of the occasion.
Though there were a few "odd" moments, I found most of the acceptance speeches to be poignant, sincere and appropriate.
Personally, I've gotten to a point where I prefer The Tonys to The Oscars. I think they do a much better job of taking advantage of an overabundance of talent in the room. ... 'til June then - and a show where "the more HOST the better" will be my cup of tea this year for sure.

Ellen Most of the talk, tweets etc all day has been about John Travolta's gaffe in introducing Idina...he called her Adele Dazeem. Apparently not a real person but a twitter account was created after the Oscar show and has been tweeting very amusing tweets all day. Sue

Yes, I got a kick out of that. Reportedly that gaffe has made Idina Menzel a trending topic and may help sell tickets for her upcoming B'way musical, IF/THEN. I know Travolta has dyslexia--although he says Scientology "cured" him of that learning disability--but if he knew he'd have trouble reading her name, all he had to do was memorize it by sound. Gheesh, just one name; it wasn't like he had to read a full list of names.
