Annette -- I hear everything is camera-ready now -- so they are all set! We first heard about the project in 2009 -- after almost 7 1/2 years ( announced in August 2009), the movie is about to film now! What a wait for Hugh...and for us Jo

I think some people think that this is a film adaptation of the stage musical called BARNUM. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnum_(musical)Maybe FOX should officially announce that this is a new original movie musical! Music by Pasek and Paul. Screenplay by Michael Arndt.

Looks like the official title was indeed truncated to THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, Earth being implied. Ellen

It's actually more emphatic and more eye-catching!
Plus it no longer connotes a link to the Charles Heston film, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH!

I'm glad they seemed not to have gone for a "realistic" portrayal of Mr.Barnum! Hugh is looking great in the period costume! Besides, I don't remember that Jim Daly or Michael Crawford were made up to look like the real P.T.Barnum in the stage musical - so there is already a precedent. I do prefer Hugh in this film looking a lot like Hugh Jackman himself Jo

That reminds me of his PRESTIGE look, not bad at all.

Some people say he looked like Valjean, not realizing that he was costumed for his new movie Hugh actually specializes in the 19th century look -- *Angier *Valjean *Leopold and *Barnum PS: He also looks good as someone from other centuries -- *Tomas The Conquistador *Van Helsing ( both the leather outfits and what he wore to Dracula's Ball) *Arthur, the King of Camelot, in Night at the Museum *Er...Blackbeard, too

I know where that is--I grew up right around there. I still go to that part of the Island (Staten, not Long) for dental visits. Too bad I'm all caught up on cleanings and such. Historic Richmondtown (which my friends and I used to mockingly call Hysterical Richmondtown) features a colonial village that tourists frequent. Volunteers dress up (or at least they used to) as early settlers and guide visitors. Barnum lived way past colonial times--but maybe they're making use of some of the set-up there. Ellen

Ellen,
Interesting that the story takes place in the 19th century mostly -- and maybe that is why period architecture will likely be important.
I am keen to know if the musical score particularly suits the period or the characters from the past. Pasek and Paul have written for more contemporary characters ( such as for their new Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen) - have they turned back the time for melodies and lyrics that harken back the past? And has Michael Arndt ( who won an Oscar for a more contemporary family-friendly movie) written a screenplay that tells the story with a nod to the look and cultural notes of the past?
" A magical, old-school Hollywood musical style ", maybe?
