I've owned a copy of LES PARAPLUIES DE CHERBOURG for many years. I practically memorized most of the recitative. When my daughter began taking French in high school, during a parent-teacher meeting we got to talking about the movie, also one of the teacher's favorites. I launched (quietly) into some of my favorite lines: "Mais je ne pourrais jamais vivre sans toi/Je ne pourrais pas; ne pars pas, j'en mourrai..." She gave me a big smile and said now she knows why my daughter seems to like French so much.

"But I could never live without you / I could not; do not leave, I will die...: How melodramatic -- but very French. I remember another movie from that era - not a musical -- A MAN AND A WOMAN but with another fantastic music score ( Anouk Aimee and Jean-Louis Trintignant -- and I do remember seeing it at an East Side cinema in NYC a very long time ago)...The tradition continues with Marion Cotillard, who also sings I need subtitles for French movies -- I might recognize a few phrases here and there but because conversational dialog is said fast, I could hardly cope  But I did see LES MISERABLES in French at the Mogador Theatre in Paris in 1992! LOL - at that time, I was very French-illiterate and could only figure out " 24601 " Last year, we were going to see CATS in French at the same theatre ( which was very near our hotel - we figured that it would be entertaining enough even if we didn't catch most of the lyrics) but they were sold out. Recently, I have just read that the 30th anniversary show for LE FANTOME ( aka Phantom of the Opera) may not be able to proceed at that theatre because they had a big fire. I think it is supposed to be Sierra Boggess who is singing Christine in French! But I love this one -- Mascarade/Masquarade! And it looks like they are actually rehearsing at the Garnier Opera House, which is very near the Mogador Theatre, and where the fictional Phantom was supposed to have resided. It is said that an actual underground river has been found underneath the layers of soil/stone where the Opera House has been constructed. Masquerade is actually one of my favorite scenes and songs from the show! They are also singing in front of the Garnier Opera House -- with the signature song of The Phantom -- What a pity that Hugh could not consider the role of the film Phantom when his availability was sought as they were casting the film adaptation! It conflicted with THE BOY FROM OZ. Two extraordinary Frenchmen ( who sang their dialogs and were both dramatic personalities), Le Fantome and Jean Valjean, would have been both gems in his acting portfolio! Tres bien, Ellen  Jo |

Another confirmation that GREATEST SHOWMAN is filming soon and in New York!
I wonder if any Broadway performers have been cast in this project, given the filming location (which could provide easy access to the pool of Broadway talent) ?

Start of filming presumes that the studio recording of songs will already have been more or less completed by then? I wonder if they will release the movie soundtrack ahead of the film release, or at least one or two songs from it? Presumably the soundtrack will be taken from the studio recordings with some adjustments after they have completed filming?
This is so different from the Les Miserables filming experience!

Too early to do promotion for GREATEST SHOWMAN, but Hugh and Zac were already publicly seen together probably at the invitation of the New York Jets!  But it is very likely that the Jackman/Efron team will be as engaging as the Hugh/Taron promotion tesm for EDDIE THE EAGLE! |

I have never heard of the site ( it was posted by an IMDB poster) but their recent article notes the casting of Emily Kinney and Mackenzie Marsh. There is also mention of the old rumor of Rooney Mara being cast as The Bearded Lady, but this is very doubtful as to its veracity. creators.co/@nathaniel_Rego/4104358It seems Ms Kinney and Ms Marsh have some musical background or training, so there is a likelihood that they may have been cast in smaller support roles. |

Re table-readings -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Read-throughA lot of things mentioned here in general terms seemed to have already been accomplished ( such as many of the introductory parts -- they did have a workshop with the executives/financiers last February)...so the project may be undergoing a shorter path at this point re table-readings. |

Fortunately, it looks like he is a dancer ( based on one Instagram photo he uploaded showing him nursing a dancer's foot injury). Julius Anthony ( Rubio) seems to have extensive dancing experience on Broadway shows ( he eventually became dance captain for FINDING NEVERLAND).
I guess the rehearsals for dance numbers will be more exacting and exhausting -- and given the quality of choreography that Michael Gracey has shown in previous work ( although he may not directly be involved in designing the choreography plan for this movie as he might be busy with the overall filming needs) -- it will likely be topnotch!

Here is a concern about this film. Maybe I've mentioned it before. Circuses are now looked on as politically incorrect because of animal rights, etc. Despite the cast, good music, production, direction, etc. is anyone else worried that it will be rejected by audiences? Have the producers, writers, etc. considered this? Have they addressed this in their screenplay? Thoughts anyone?

Not having read any screenplay, I"m not certain what aspects of Barnum's professional life will be covered in the movie. But I do know that early on, he concentrated on oddities, inventions and interesting items from around the world along with the likes of Tom Thumb and such. That material was covered in the stage musical BARNUM. You pose an interesting question, Kathy. I thought audiences, especially families, still flocked to circuses. Is that not the case?

Ellen My impression is that circuses are not as popular as they used to be, mainly because of animal mistreatment issues. In the internet culture, negative chatter over this type of subject matter can influence the success of a film. However, if as you say, the emphasis is on inventions and characters rather than animals, that could make a difference. My fear is that animal rights people might trash PT Barnum as a character because of "political correctness" animal protection issues. My hope is that the musical score, film direction, and performances will earn enough critical acclaim to drown out the criticism of the political correctness crowd. |

Some hints on earlier screenplays -- *The first draft written by Jenny Bicks was supposed to focus a lot more on his relationship with Jenny Lind. However later reports indicated that that angle might have been de-emphasized. *A revised draft indicated the following -- deadline.com/2014/11/hugh-jackman-greatest-showman-on-earth-pt-barnum-1201286864/However, the final screenplay was written by Oscar winner Michael Arndt ( he won his Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine and was also nominated for Toy Story 3...he also wrote the scripts for Hunger Games:Catching Fire and Star Wars :The Force Awakens ) and the word is that it is a "homerun" script! Who knows what is emphasized in the final version. But since it seems that this movie will be pitched to general audiences (with some emphasis to the family-friendly sector) with its release date of December 25, 2017 ( although to people in Hollywood, that hints more of hopes for Oscar attention ), the screenplay will likely be carefully polished not to be offensive to any sector. It might be hard to ignore history ( the circus is the circus, as it was then) but they will probably inject the right touch between realism and cultural norms of the present day. This project has gone into so much revisions and attention that the script will likely be one that will not offend while it entertains! Just my two cents worth. Jo |

Thanks for the clarification, Jo. You can't make a Civil War movie without mentioning slavery, and you also can't do BT Barnum without showing some circus history. Smart people worked on this, so hopefully it will entertain without offending, as you say.

Didn't he say once that he has been advised before that biking opens up the lungs/throat ( can't remember which -- maybe both??) and makes singing a lot easier? He said it when he was asked why he was using a bike to get to his Les Mis audition ( the incident when his bike wheels were stolen). Maybe that is why he is using a bike on the way to rehearsals?
