Then that makes the group possibly a mix of young and older kids.

I responded to this tweet from someone who probably did not even see Greatest Showman! He would not even acknowledge that it was its originality (the story, the life messages, and of course the music) which sold the movie!

There are 225 responses to the article - mostly positive, some negative about the movie...with raging debates here and there. But I thought this was the most thoughtful --

How true -- one can discern them mostly on social media messages, especially now that his music tour is reinforcing his image of being a song and dance man!
There were many remarkable memories of Hugh Jackman playing the role of Wolverine - altogether 9 times (including a solo trilogy and 2 cameos) -- sad that some do not know or fully appreciate the body of work he has done here. To me, the most telling admiration come from fans who say " he represented my childhood" and continuing to appreciate his work even when they have grown into adulthood. Now, there is a continuing desire to see Hugh return to the role, even if only for one last time! Plus the many, many objections to any suggestion of a recasting of the role. That is how indelible his work on the Wolverine saga has been stamped in the minds of fanboys and fangirls...and any other fan who discovered Hugh Jackman via the Wolverine portrayals!
The emerging foray into drama is also noted. There was The Fountain first, then The Prestige, Prisoners (even Les Misérables, to some extent) all proofs that Hugh Jackman is also a first-class dramatic actor. His newer work lean towards this genre - The FrontRunner, Bad Education and Reminiscence! There is hope that he will eventually be recognized for this kind of work ( through an Oscar win, which will complete his EGOT stature). Interestingly, this is the kind of acting training that he underwent - a dramatic course at WAAPA! One of his bucket list wishes is to do a classical play ( work of The Bard) on stage!
Of course, musical theatre is also in his blood! He is supposed to have committed to a yearlong run for THE MUSIC MAN. Even TheManTheMusicTheShow is, in essence, a theatre show ( narrative and music blending well together...as they both advance his personal retrospective). I may be wrong, but I think there might be some misconception that what he wants is to be a concert stage artist ( so many asking him to return to the concert formats again and again). That Rockstar dream seems more like a bucket list wish fulfilled! If I recall right, he has always talked in the past on how he wanted to create a show ( not necessarily a concert) with music he has worked with and music that is in his memory cells - so it has always been from the focal point of a retrospective! Nothing more! If he revisits the format, maybe it is to add to his personal retrospective?
Of course The Greatest Showman created a totally unexpected impact on the public's perception of his talent. To old-time fans - it really confirmed that Hugh Jackman is arguably the most versatile actor/performer around - film, theatre...and now even the concert stage.
Hope the EGOT stature comes soon -- he truly deserves that accolade and recognition!!

The first photo was during the reshoots suggested by James Mangold ( who was asked to help in post production). The second one shows him signing what seems like Greatest Showman stuff - maybe either 2018/2019? Jo

We did not expect the movie to give us life-affirming messages and lessons in life -- it seems that is how it impacted to movie audiences, including the young ones!

The second musical number in the 2009 Oscars is less heralded than the celebrated Opening Number. But I think this is what gave then Oscar-producer Lawrence Mark the idea of a Barnum musical with Hugh Jackman in mind! Ten years later...and maybe after the great success of LES MISERABLES/THE GREATEST SHOWMAN/LA LA LAND, most of Hollywood wants to do musicals! LOL! *Bohemian Rhaphsody, Rocketman, remake of West Side Story/ live action BeautyAndTheBeast/Cinderella/LittleMermaid, etc/,Frozen1&2 Jo

Interesting comment re Greatest Showman on the CATS discussion thread on BWW --
What I find interesting is the comparison with Hamilton. True, Hamilton is the musical success story in America - No question about that...period! Maybe because of its appeal to the historical heritage...because of the innovativeness of the casting in multi-racial America...and maybe because of its modern music treatment for the younger generation.
On the other hand, the measure of success of The Greatest Showman is not just for its pure entertainment value. It has become a worldwide success for its music, its life messages, and its cultural assimilation! In every celebratory event, in every expression of self-worth, in every child's early awakening to music and dance, in every life message that each song/film storyline touches with personal meaning - can we really wonder why The Greatest Showman has become the musical phenomenon of our age? How music and dance have become expressions of individuality and collective joy! Even for us who followed its progress ( and certainly for those artists involved in its creation) we cannot believe how universal its appeal has reached! Every time I hear a young girl sing A Million Dreams, I am touched at the childlike vision of the future and its musical self-expression! Every moment one rises to proclaim self-belief with This Is Me, one rejoices for his triumph. And every time a young boy in resplendent red wipes the brim of his oversized hat and tosses his oversized cane, I think that his dreams are soaring into becoming The Greatest Show!

CATS is showing dismal results at the box office...and there was some comparison to a similar poor first week screening results of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. That encouraged some discussion on Greatest Showman and why it succeeded -- www.talkinbroadway.com/allthatchat_new/d.php?id=2475324That seemed like a smug oversimplification on the reason for the success of The Greatest Showman. I responded, thus --

Film analysts, for example Scott Mendelssohn of FORBES, are acknowledging SHOWMAN'S much more positive Cinemascore and RT audience scores when comparing the two. Most discussions re CATS seem to draw comparisons with The Greatest Showman, because --
*they're movie musicals *released on or close to Christmas Day *Did poorly for the initial week of release *Both composers were previous Oscar winners
The comparisons stop there --
*The Greatest Showman is an original musical and its musical score was introduced only in the same month as release. *It has no loyal stage musical fans per se because it is an original film musical *The cast for Showman has solid movie following, three of which have been Broadway performers *It is hard to appreciate the book/storyline of CATS, while Greatest Showman is the story of how mass entertainment became famous, as inspired by the life of the greatest impresario, PTBarnum.

ComingSoon.net must have published this post-mortem way after the movie THE GREATEST SHOWMAN has already awed with its tremendous success. There is a line which suggests purchase of the home video/prime video via Amazon. But this is probably very fairly close-to-the-truth analysis of what brought on the tremendous success of the movie. Except maybe the lack of mention of the power of dance! Also, the True Story Behind the Making of the Movie is not presented correctly, since there is no mention of what inspired the long-gestating project! The discovery of someone like Keala is only an incidental occurrence! www.comingsoon.net/movies/features/1046283-5-reasons-why-the-greatest-showman-is-the-greatest-musical

Two years ago, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN was released in America and subsequently in other parts of the world. In that span of time, despite the negative reviews ( 56% on Rotten Tomatoes) but with a more enlightened audience score of 86% ( *grin* ), people are still singing its praises and literally singing its songs. I am taking the time to read and reprint the most comprehensive review, with all the positives that eventually turned this movie into a cultural sensation - Owen Gleiberman's VARIETY review of The Greatest Showman - to see if what he saw are the reasons why the appeal of the movie and the soundtrack has so much universal and enduring appeal! Do read some of the feedback comments, too. In fact, movie audiences did vote with their feet and came to see the movie over and over...and listened to the score countless times, up to now! Also, notably, the soundtrack album ended up as being 2018 best-selling album worldwide ( regardless of music type). But even more amazing is how the musical score has become songs that permeate some of life's important events, including becoming theme song for the Winter Olympics! Perhaps Hugh Jackman's recently concluded music tour ( premised on some of the songs from this movie) did help give the musical an extended life! variety.com/2017/film/reviews/the-greatest-showman-review-hugh-jackman-1202644784/Jo
