"In negotiations" means that the deal is now under discussion, which presupposes that he may have already agreed to take the role but the contract is up next. In many cases, it is just a formality. He was seen with Hugh at Pearl Studios during the preparations for the workshop last February. Hugh and Zac...and who else I am also curious about three additional things -- *Where are they filming the movie? *Who will play the role of Charity ( his wife) and Jenny Lind ( the singer)? *If they film in NYC, will any Broadway triple threats ( shown in the workshop photo), be asked to join the film project? Also, the Variety report needs a little updating because the screenplay was also reviewed/retouched by Bill Condon ( who is directing Beauty and the Beast) and further down by another scriptwriter. Plus the twitter reports on the February final workshop seemed to indicate that the final set of composers are Pasek and Paul ( the only ones shown on the photo of the workshop participants). Pasek and Paul are due to open their acclaimed off-Broadway show DEAR EVAN HANSEN on Broadway this late fall ( presumably it might coincide with the filming for GREATEST SHOWMAN, which is very likely because the movie musical is due out on December 25, 2017). Busy period for this upcoming composing duo! Hope Zac finally seals the deal!Jo

The Hollywood Reporter is also reporting the deal discussions with Zac... so it sounds like a news leak from the studio itself. Presumably, we will hear more about this project soon? Or could it be from Zac's side? www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/zac-efron-talks-join-hugh-903338With Hugh and Zac...er, the ladies will probably come in droves to see this movie Jo

Here's Zac from HAIRSPRAY --
Hey, if you are wondering who that seemingly-familiar-face who is playing the dj -- that is James Marsden ( aka Cyclops in the original XMen trilogy).

Carol,
Was it a categorical announcement that Zac is definitely signed up...or still in negotiations? Thanks.

The current corporate upheaval at FOX, with the announcement that Jim Gianopulos will end his tenure as studio chief by June 30, 2017 may impact on projects that he may leave when he takes on a separate strategic role in the parent company (21st Century Fox).
Please see the full article from Variety posted in UNDERSTANDING THE FILM BUSINESS topic.
Will incoming solo studio chief Stacey Snider be reviewing projects that she may fully inherit? Wolverine 3 would already have been released by the time Jim G leaves his current responsibility...but Greatest Showman will be released only on December 25, 2017, so that is likely going to be coming under her review?
Hope any review will be positive in terms of the project plans for eventual filming and release!

It was allotted most of the time given for the 2-hour Fox presentation! It was given a prominent way to sell the upcoming movie musical project to the theatre exhibitors! La-la-land is going to open the Venice Film Festival! Beauty and the Beast is a blockbuster even before it opens. Pitch Perfect will rely on its 2 previous film successes! On the one hand, maybe the theatre exhibitors would appreciate the biopic because it is about a kindred historical personality ( who invented how to best sell entertainment) Too bad Hugh is busy with Wolverine 3 ( which is also on a tight schedule now, given that its release date of March 2/3, 2017 is only about 8 months away, give or take a week or so!) or he could have been there ( he has attended this trade show in Barcelona once) . But it's time to create strong buzz for this movie musical He is differentiating it from a comedy with music ( LaLaLand), the live-action Disney show ( Beauty and the Beast), and a Glee- cum- High -School- Musical appeal ( Pitch Perfect) by promising a return to the classical type of musical -- a wonderful and period-piece story, very strong characterizations, tuneful and inspiring musical score ( e.g., This Is Me), dazzling choreography, plus it has a real musical theatre star to lead the way ( Hugh Jackman vis-a-vis Julie Andrews)!! Hope the project is now on its way! Jo

Someone has put up a list on IMDB of potential 2017/2018 Oscar contenders. GREATEST SHOWMAN is among them But what is interesting is the list of possible competition! www.imdb.com/list/ls063563239?ref_=rls_5Based on the brief description for each film, it seems drama is the main focus even for the thriller-based movies. Greatest Showman is the only one that will likely focus on drama, music, and spectacle! Jo

These are the details again on the workshop mentioned in the CineEurope article where Hugh was supposed to have sung, despite doctor's orders to the contrary --
Not included in the photo but supposedly part of the workshop were Jeremy Jordan ( Newsies) and Andrew Keenan Bolger ( Tuck Everlasting) ... and not identified but I think she was also in the photo was Caroline Bowman, all musical theatre stars. Cynthia Erivo has won a Best Actress TONY for Color Purple since then.
I wonder if any of them are going to be part of the movie, assuming that filming takes place in NYC?

Greatest Showman will film in the USA ( NYC?) , according to Australian media -- www.smh.com.au/entertainment/movies/short-cuts-tropfest-nz-canned-but-australian-short-film-festival-will-go-ahead-20160622-gporf7.htmlIt is likely filming in New York. I have always thought that the film project will benefit more from filming in NYC -- *The setting of the biopic is in the tri-state area. Barnum, a famous impresario, lived in Connecticut and his entertainment events had likely largely occurred in the tri-state area, so replicating 19th century northeastern USA will be easier. *Casting of actors/actresses and hiring of other members of the creative team/technical crew outside of Hollywood can likely be filled by triple threats from the Broadway community and the extensive film production talent in the area. The workshop was performed by Broadway triple threats, including Hugh Jackman! The music was composed mainly by Pasek and Paul, who are more known for their stage musicals. It may also be more convenient or easier as some may not want to film in faraway Australia, especially if they have families in the USA. It may also elicit the full support of the Broadway community and theatre fans if some minor roles can be filled by stage actors/actresses. *Set reports out of New York may increase interest in the film project especially in the domestic market as the biopic is essentially an American story! *Also, Pasek and Paul have a Broadway opening for their off-Broadway show ( DEAR EVAN HANSEN) in late fall, so filming and prep in the Northeast will be easier for them. Maybe the writer assumed that since he was asked by his doctors not to sing right after his surgical procedures, it must have been related to his lungs Or Google Translate got the translation really wrong Jo

I hope FOX makes an official announcement soon --
I am also keen to know who have been cast besides Hugh and maybe Zac...such as the two ladies in this biopic?
If filming is going to be in NYC, does this mean that there is a possibility that some Broadway triple threats might have some roles in the film project? Especially those who participated in the workshop in February?
If Hugh is able to join the Barbra Streisand concert in Brooklyn, I wonder if he will mention his forthcoming film musical project?
