Interest query on BWW --

I'm having the worst luck here...

Being not at all familiar with the set design for this show, what would we say is the better vantage point: The 200's (on the aisle, or closer to center?), or the 100's?

Nobody really knows what the set design is for the show -- all the seating chart indicates is that there will be a thrust stage ( so it will not play totally in the round) because there needs to be some sort of wings for the characters to come in and out ( If you have read the play, this is important!) ? I also wonder if the seating chart graphically represents correct distances ( such as the side rows compared to the center rows in relation to the stage). From the look of it -- the center row seems a bit further away from the stage, but the distance might actually be just a few meters? How much would you like to see Hugh Jackman close up -- LOL! I am sure it wouldn't really matter that much -- given the size and configuration of this theatre.

I guess we will only know when the first preview unfolds ( which would be in almost a month's time).

I don't think the staging in London would be any help because the theatre there is a small seater ( less than 100) using a proscenium stage.

Hmm... my own guess is that the aisle seats ( e.g., 201/202) might be a good compromise between side and center rows. I could be totally wrong, though

Do actors for straight plays use microphones all the time now? Or are there still plays where the actors use their natural voice projected to the last row of the theatre... I can't remember how it was for A STEADY RAIN.

What would be interesting to me is whether Hugh is going to speak with an English accent or use a generic one -- in which case his co-stars may have to do the same thing

Back from Rosh Hashanah services. To all celebrants, have a sweet New Year! (Actually, wishing everyone here a wonderful year.)

Most actors in straight plays now wear those headgear mics that make them look like quail, LOL. There are some exceptions, usually in smaller houses, but it looks as though wearing a mic is fairly commonplace now, at least on Broadway. As to A STEADY RAIN, I don't remember any devices curling around Hugh's sideburn, so unless I'm misremembering, I don't believe he and Daniel Craig used sound amplification. Anybody remember differently?

I'm looking forward to seeing what accent they use. I have a feeling it will be British, since the two women are British.

I would love to hear Hugh speak unaided by a mic! All the more I am excited if I am gaping by the riverbank - LOL! And if he does an English accent -- that would be another treat! Hmmm - he has English parents ( esp his Mum who has lived in England since way back) and has spent his gap year there... and he has been filming a few movies there recently ( Les Miserables and Pan), so it may be easier for him to adapt to, than say the Italian/American Chicago cop accent of "Denny".

Will there be water on stage? The only show I remember where water was featured on stage was for the Banderas revival of NINE - there was a scene where Guido was seen trampling on the water by a fountain -- and there must have been a few inches of water onstage!

Offhand, I can think of 110 IN THE SHADE (revival) and LEAP OF FAITH. Also, the recent revival of THE GLASS MENAGERIE had a visually interesting pool of black water enveloping the stage. I'm sure there are more, but it's too early in the day to start thinking.

Let's face it-plays deserve more appreciation. And sadly, in the New York City theatre scene, they are often denied the same credit as the musicals which are so widely advertised. While I am typically partial to the musical (with my background in singing, it is hardly a stretch), sometimes I just have to work in a good play to spice things up. And I'm always glad I did. With the variety of plays that the City has to offer, there really is something for everyone. So here are 3 must-see plays that will make your Broadway experience!...

It is clear to anybody with even a modicum of sense that Hugh Jackman can do pretty much anything. I almost wouldn't be surprised if he turned out to be super-human. I mean, this is the same guy who played Wolverine, and a little too convincingly, I might add. He can dance, sing, act, and as far as I can tell, he has managed to remain unaffected by the ravages of time. And on November 16th, he'll return to Broadway in Jez Butterworth's new play, The River, playing at the Circle in the Square Theatre. Jackman plays a man trying to convince a young woman to accompany him on a late night fishing trip. The consequences of this seemingly harmless fishing trip quickly turn mysterious, leaving the audiences with no choice but to piece together what might have happened. The River is expected to run until January 25th, 2015.

Rehearsals begin today, Thursday, October 2 in New York City for The River, a new play by Jez Butterworth, starring Hugh Jackman, Laura Donnelly and Cush Jumbo and directed by Ian Rickson. The River begins preview performances in four weeks on Friday, October 31 and will open on Sunday, November 16 at the Circle in the Square Theatre (50th Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue). The production will play a strictly limited 13-week engagement through Sunday, January 25, 2015.

On a moonless evening, a man brings his new girlfriend to a remote cabin for a night of trout-fishing. But before the night is over, it becomes clear that nothing is as it seems… and as memory collides with desire, the truth becomes the most elusive catch of all.

The River was first developed by Sonia Friedman Productions and was subsequently produced by the Royal Court Theatre. It was presented from October 18-November 17, 2012 in the Royal Court’s Jerwood Theatre Upstairs, in a production directed by Mr. Rickson, also featuring Ms. Donnelly, who makes her Broadway debut alongside Ms. Jumbo.

Hugh Jackman, Laura Donnelly and Cush Jumbo are appearing with the support of Actors’ Equity Association. The Producers gratefully acknowledge Actors’ Equity Association for its assistance of this production.

The production marks the sixth collaboration between Mr. Butterworth and Mr. Rickson. Mr. Rickson has previously directed the world premiere productions of Mr. Butterworth’s Mojo, The Night Heron, The Winterling, Parlour Song and the multi-award-winning London and Broadway production of Jerusalem.

Circle in the Square’s unique configuration and intimacy has made it a favorite of many stars who have graced its stage over the decades in both classics and new plays, including Colleen Dewhurst, Lillian Gish, George C. Scott, Julie Christie, Al Pacino, James Earl Jones, Vanessa Redgrave, Kevin Kline, Joanne Woodward, Rex Harrison, John Malkovich, Nathan Lane, Philip Seymour Hoffman and many others. The 2009 critically acclaimed and Tony Award®-winning revival of The Norman Conquests, produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, also played at the theatre.

The River is designed by Ultz, with lighting by Charles Balfour, sound by Ian Dickinson for Autograph, music by Stephen Warbeck, and casting by Jim Carnahan.

PLEASE NOTE: Riverbank seating for The River ($95) is now sold out. The following are additional ticket access policies for The River.

$35 TICKETS

The production will sell $35 tickets for every performance. There will be two ways to purchase these tickets.

OPTION ONE
Starting every Monday for the current week of performances, 20 seats for each of that week’s performances (160 seats per week) will be available for advance purchase for $35, only at the Circle in the Square box office. Customers will be able to purchase one or two tickets with a photo ID. The customer will receive a receipt and the tickets will be held in their name at the box office. The tickets will be available for pick-up at the box office one hour before the purchased performance and the ticket holder will need to show ID and receipt to receive the tickets. The policy will go into effect starting on Monday, October 27 at 10:00 AM at the Circle in the Square Theatre box office for the first week of performance.

OPTION TWO
There will also be 20 tickets available for $35 and sold for day-of performances, available for purchase when the box office opens daily at 10:00 AM (noon for Sunday performances).

STANDING ROOM
The production will have $30 standing room locations available for purchase. The seats will be on sale at the box office and available when the performance is sold out.

BIOGRAPHIES

Hugh Jackman is an Academy Award-nominated, Golden Globe and Tony Award-winning actor. The Australian native was most recently on Broadway in his one-man show Hugh Jackman – Back on Broadway in the fall of 2011. Jackman’s dedication to the Broadway community was feted at the 2012 Tony Awards, where he received a Special Award from the Tony Awards Administration Committee, recognizing his accomplishments as a performer and humanitarian. He previously starred on Broadway in Keith Huff’s play, A Steady Rain, opposite Daniel Craig, and as 1970s singer-songwriter Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz, for which he received the 2004 Tony Award for Best Actor in a musical as well as Drama Desk, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards. Additional theater: Carousel at Carnegie Hall, Oklahoma! at the National Theater in London (Olivier nomination), Sunset Boulevard (MO Award, Australia’s Tony Award) and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (MO Award nomination). Laura Donnelly grew up in Belfast, Ireland before moving to Glasgow to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Since graduating from Royal Scottish in 2004, she has worked extensively in film, television and theatre. Cush Jumbo received one of the top honors at this year’s Evening Standard Awards when she was presented with the “Emerging Talent Award” for her self-penned solo show, Josephine and I. She was also nominated for “Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre” at the Oliver Awards for her performance. Josephine and I played at The Bush Theatre in July and August 2013, where it was well-received by critics and public alike. She also reprised her role of Marc Antony in an all-female version of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar at St. Ann’s Warehouse in New York. The show, which originated at the Donmar Warehouse in London, earned rave reviews on both continents. In a star-studded cast, she was singled out by the Olivier Awards as the sole acting nominee. Both productions were directed by acclaimed film and theatre director Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!, The Iron Lady). She also won the award for Best Actress at The Manchester Awards for her performance as Nora in A Doll’s House at the Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester. In 2012, she was awarded the prestigious Ian Charleson Award for her performance as Rosalind in As You Like It, also at the Royal Exchange. This award honors the finest classical performance of the year by an actor under 30. His singing teacher once told him the best way to warm up his voice for theatre was to ride his bike.

And Wolverine star Hugh Jackman did just that when he jumped on his hybrid and demonstrated the true meaning of peddle power as he headed to Times Square to rehearse new show The River.

The 45-year-old Australian, a fan of two-wheeled transportation, took to the streets of New York on his bicycle on Thursday, looking every inch the serious cyclist in a helmet, wind-proof jacket and wrap-arounds.

He was greeted at The Circle stage door by a phalanx of fans and theatre staff, one of whom he affectionately hugged, planting a kiss on her head

The fitness fanatic is known to pack in the exercise as part of his daily routine, which begins most mornings in the gym, but he is often seen riding around town mid-afternoon.

Jackman, whose Broadway credits include The Boy From Oz and Carousel, previously revealed his voice coach Joan Lader advised him to ride his bike to get his breath going for singing auditions and now he does it whenever he treads the boards...
