There never was a cockier boy,” wrote J. M. Barrie in Chapter Three of Peter and Wendy, the novel of 1911 that grew from his play of 1904, Peter Pan. The chapter is called “Come Away, Come Away!,” and that’s what the screenwriter Jason Fuchs (who is also writing 2017’s Wonder Woman) and director Joe Wright (Atonement, Anna Karenina) have done in the upcoming film Pan, a fresh take on the children’s classic. Though its narrative includes Peter as a baby, Pan is less a prequel (as has been suggested) than it is a fantasia on the theme of Peter Pan. “It’s a reimagining,” says Wright, who read Fuchs’s script in one sitting, loved its exuberance, and met with Warner Bros. the following day.

Wright knew the book from his own childhood and remembers “being quite freaked out by the images and ideas. It’s not like most other children’s books; it has a total honesty and goes to quite unusual places.” Which meant that he had to go there, too. Pan has afforded Wright an enormous canvas, with room for intoxicating imaginative play. “There’s something kind of Psychedelic Baroque about the movie,” he says, “its visual expression.” Of the young actor Levi Miller, who plays Peter, Wright says, “The light in his eyes comes from the light in his heart.” And of Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard: “He’s extraordinary in the movie—wicked and damaged and beautiful.” The scene where Peter and his friends, asleep in a London orphanage, are snatched up through skylights by three dozen pirates who bungee-jump from an airborne ship, “that sequence feels like a big moment in my cinematic development,” says Wright, “the sort of thing I never would have tried before.” It’s the spell of Peter Pan, perhaps, forever urging one to fly.

Already proving to be an innovative take on the traditional story of Peter Pan, the upcoming Pan also showcases Hugh Jackman in a villainous role as a pale, white wig-sporting rendition of the famous pirate, Blackbeard. Jackman, who trades his adamantium claws for a cutlass, personally posted a short trailer that gives us more of the sprawling, majestic cinematic magic.


In the new Pan clip provided by Jackman, his Blackbeard welcomes us to Neverland, brandishing the kind of demented, over-the-top hospitality expected from a ruthless pirate spreading tyranny over a magical fantasy land. He’d probably wine you and dine you, but would just as easily shove a dagger through your eye for looking at him cockeyed. Blackbeard serves as both our antagonist and expositional guide to the wondrous realm of Neverland. The place seems to be a well-timed escape for the film’s two heroes, Peter Pan and James Hook, both of whom have some serious issues that will need resolving in the future.

Approaching J.M. Barrie's traditional Peter Pan story as an origin tale, we’ll get to see the titular youth, played by Levi Miller, at a time before his childhood was never-ending. Snatched out of the dark, Dickensian orphanage in which he was forced to stay, Peter believes that Neverland could hold the answer to the definitive question in his life: Where is his mother? He’s joined in his curious quest by new friends, warrior princess Tiger Lilly (Rooney Mara) and an American explorer named James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), who has both of his hands and his sanity still intact at this point. Together, they start a magical mutiny to free Neverland from the tyranical rule of the pasty, mustachioed menace, Blackbeard.

Directed by Joe Wright, we see the helmer of slick thrillers like Hanna and Atonement approach the sprawling, sublime landscape of Neverland, putting aside ambitious cinematography for awe-inspiring storytelling. With its fantastical elements of flying pirate ships and exotic landscapes dotted with topographical oddities, the film will test Wright’s abilities to put together an inspiring, accessible cinematic experience for audiences of all ages. Clearly, the film is looking to separate itself from the 1954 Disney animated classic that likely defines the story for many. However, in a way reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s approach to Batman Begins, the film seems to define itself not as a prequel or even a reboot, but rather, as the new clip’s song implies, "the beginning." From the look of things in this footage, that seems to be exactly what has been accomplished.

Pan looks to rescue wayward urban urchins and turn them into saviors of magical lands full of fairies and flying boats when it flies into theaters powered by imagination and Hugh Jackman’s mustache wax on July 24.

I wonder if film sites who were invited for a set visit were also given access to the original draft of the script?

Hmmm....

I think a delayed release was most likely ( maybe to avoid the internet traffic generated by the Star Wars trailer) -- given that the teaser is only for 15 seconds while the rated new trailer was for 2:24 minutes.

Likewise, Warners released a big trailer of its own yesterday, for Batman and Superman. While it couldn't quite compete with Star Wars, it did garner a lot of interest as well (7 millions hits since yesterday). I had thought it was coming early next week, so perhaps Warners opted to switch its trailer release date with Pan.

I work at a theatre and I received a projection notice from the studio ordering to delete all trailers and destroy all posters for this film.

The poster is a longtime IMDB member and his previous posts seemed credible ( not coming from a troll).

I hope the change is not because the release is being pushed back but that they may be realigning the marketing strategy for a more effective exposure for the movie.

I thought the release of the set visit reports ( usually with the studio's consent) was an indication that everything was going to plans.

I wouldn't have paid attention to the above IMDB post had there not been an unexplained postponement of the release of the second trailer ( after all the social media announcements on the exact date and even the iTunes alert). Also, it was unusual to use the social media accounts of the leads ( Jackman, Miller) to announce a teaser -- that would be limited to the audience of these actors. That seemed like a stopgap measure. I have also wondered why the official site that was announced on the poster is still not up and running...while the official Facebook account has disappeared.

Is the marketing group being reorganized so another team can deliver a more effective strategy?

Or...is there a delay in post-production???

This reminds me of the shift in the release of Les Miserables, from early to December to Christmas Day in 2012...but that had a very short post-production schedule. PAN completed filming in the fall of 2014 and has a longer period to handle reshoots and major post-production aspects, although PAN presumably has a more difficult schedule due to all the CGI work in the movie.

There has been no change in the schedule posted by Box Office Mojo ( they are usually the most reliable and most updated when it comes to any release date changes) --

Hunger Games- Mockingjay 2 is slated for a November 20 release. There are two releases for WB on November 25 ( Creed and Midnight Special, both due for WIDE releases).

Yes, I noticed the two Thanksgiving (yes, Nov 25) releases, Creed and Midnight Run. Warners' Christmas slate still looks thin, with just Point Break. I wonder if they might move either of the above to Christmas to make room for Pan, or just move Pan to Christmas. It also occurred to me there might be something as simple as an error in the promo material, some problem with the credits. That seems unlikely, but if it were to happen, I guess they'd have no choice but to pull back the erroneous material.

If they decide to move PAN to the holidays ( Thanksgiving or Christmas -- which might even be more threatening in terms of competition -- Hunger Games Mockingjay 2 and Star Wars are looming during that time) -- it might also create a scheduling problem for Hugh for the media promotion worldwide as well as any series of premieres in key cities. Hugh is supposed to start filming GREATEST SHOWMAN ON EARTH in September and it is likely going to take the usual 3-4 months shooting schedule. Unfortunately, SHOWMAN is a Fox project while PAN is a Warner Bros release...not sure Fox will allow any interruption in filming to accommodate PAN, in case of a pushback to the holidays.

Hugh is not just the lead star for GREATEST SHOWMAN but he is also one of two key producers of the project - so his presence during filming may even be more necessary?

I noticed the error in the poster immediately ( when they released it) but chose to keep quiet. It was a very significant error!

If you look at the official list of credits at the bottom ( where Hugh Jackman's name is listed above the title), they forgot to list the name of Levi Miller! How could they -- when he is the titular lead!!

I am not too sure -- but I couldn't spot the name of screenwriter Jason Fuchs either ( the lettering is too vague)




LOL - I even used a magnifying glass to be sure!

People have also noticed that some posters (like the one you show) list the score as being from Dario Marianelli while others (below) list the score as being from John Powell. Apparently, there has been a transition from Marianelli to Powell during post-production. If the print posters they've sent out is incorrect in BOTH of these ways, I can see the need to pull it back. It does concern me that avoidable errors like this could derail or delay the marketing plan.

I rewatched the trailer -- they also missed the name of Levi Miller in the official list of credits! His name is mentioned in the cast highlights in the middle of the trailer but it is missed in the official listing at the end.

Having reconfirmed the major errors on the promo material as well as the initial trailer -- I'm beginning to be more hopeful that the original release date stands.

They will likely release the second trailer shortly and theatre exhibitors will be provided with correct promo materials and a corrected first trailer.

There's one scriptwriting review site that not only reviews scripts and encourages new work from new screenwriters... but also shares some inside stories and some insights on the movie business --

I got this from an email that I received as part of their service ( I once had communications with the editor a very long time ago and he put me on the exclusive mailing list) --

To be fair, Batman vs. Superman got a raw deal. They didn’t mean to post their trailer so soon after Star Wars. But someone leaked a shitty cell-phone version of the trailer a week ahead of time so Zack Snyder and crew had no choice but to post the real version (you don’t want anyone watching a visually sub-par version of your 300 million dollar film).

Even with the real trailer though, the general consensus seemed to be disappointment. Geeks everywhere tried to place blame. “Zack Snyder isn’t a good director.” “Ben Affleck shouldn’t have been cast as Batman.” But those remarks are wrong. The film looks fine and Ben Affleck actually looks pretty awesome. You want to know the real reason this trailer isn’t playing well? It’s because of a shift in collective audience expectation.

Audiences are getting tired of super-dark big budget films. Each film embracing the Christopher Nolan approach feels like a 50 pound weight placed on our cinema-loving shoulders. With Star Wars coming back and Fast and the Furious being the first movie to 1 billion dollars worldwide and Guardians of the Galaxy becoming a surprise mega-hit and everyone looking forward to the new Avengers movie, audiences are starting to gravitate towards fun again. And Superman vs. Batman doesn’t look fun. It looks, quite frankly, depressing.

That doesn’t mean it’s not going to make money. There’s too much invested in the film for the studio and they’ll spend a billion dollars on advertising if they have to to get that 200 million dollar opening weekend. But there’s a screenwriting lesson in all of this. Part of your job as a screenwriter is to see where movies are trending. You have to feel out when a trend is dying out and when one is picking up. And you have to add or subtract three years to that prediction, since that’s the quickest your current spec could be purchased and turned into a movie. In general, though, every trend dies. And this reliance on super-dark fare has been grating on moviegoers for a couple of years now. Maybe it’s time to start thinking lighter. Well, unless you’re Matthew McConaughey of course.

Maybe PAN will have its chance as an excellent movie that is aimed at bringing fun?!!

Also, maybe part of the reason for the delay in the release of the second trailer of PAN was due to the decision for damage control for the Superman vs Batman trailer ( that was leaked) which called for an immediate release, thus putting the PAN trailer on a later release schedule?

Thoughts: I’m going to tell you a secret right now. If you’re ever in a pinch for an idea – incorporate Peter Pan somehow. Hollywood LOVES Peter Pan. I see so many Peter Pan specs sell. You gotta find a unique angle. It can’t just be any old Pan script. But if you do, it will sell!

Essentially similar to what other set visit reports have indicated but this report is more picturesque.

It is a report from REGAL CINEMA ENTERTAINMENT ( Will they put together something similar to the promo presented in their cinemas for Les Miserables?) --




 The first step on our journey to Neverland begins in an office.


There’s about 10 of us squeezed into a nondescript room in nondescript building at Warner Bros’ Leavesden Studios just outside London, England. Resting on a large table in the center of the room is Neverland.


Well, a scale model anyway.



If it were a science fair diorama, it would be a strong contender for top prize. Intricately crafted from dozens of concept sketches pinned to the walls lining the room, this model of Neverland was built to provide a sense of the scale for the world of Pan. Directed by Joe Wright (Anna Karenina, Hanna) and starring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lilly, Garrett Hedlund as James Hook, and newcomer Levi Miller in the title role, Pan is an original, new look that explores how an orphan becomes the heroic Peter Pan.


On one edge of Neverland is a bright white speck of paint the size of a Lego.



“That’s the snow forest,” says Pan Production Designer Aline Bonetto. 


It is with that statement I realize that fully grasping the size of Neverland might require an assist from Neil deGrasse Tyson. 


“There’s no border for a production designer.” said Bonetto, sensing that our heads were just beginning to wrap themselves around the size and scale of Neverland.


She leads us around the room. Every detail that makes up the world of Pan was born within these walls. An albino crocodile here. A Neverbird there. Literal explosions of extensively rendered colors take up a large swath of real estate.


“There’s no blood. If someone dies they explode in color,” she says.



Then there are the pirate ships- the Ranger, the Jolly Roger and Blackbeard’s flagship Queen Anne’s Revenge. This trio of boats look like none that have ever sailed. If a pirate’s nightmares could have nightmares, these are the ships that would haunt them.



The pirates of Pan fit right in with their new-look ships. “I played on the idea of a pirate as a dandy. Dressed up. A little bit of punk,” says Costume Designer Jaqueline Durran.



In all, Durran had 250 pirates to dress. The bulk of their costumes were pieced together from whatever they found along their adventures through the twisted, salvage world that is Neverland. It is a truly clever way of giving each pirate a novel back story.


From here, our group is lead out onto the lot and is given a wonderful glimpse into the glitz and glamour that is all part of the production of a major motion picture. 



Parked next to one of Leavesden’s massive sound stages is a “dining bus.” (Picture your standard charter bus. Now remove the seats and replace them with booths and tables and an ordinary bus has been magically transformed into a dining bus.)


Inside the dining bus is where we meet our first star of the day.



Garrett Hedlund comes aboard with a trail of dust flowing in his wake and his face smeared with dirt. He flashes us a sparkling clean smile and explains the reason for his filth. He’s about to shoot a scene down in the mines. 



Of all the characters in Pan, Hedlund’s Hook is easily the most conflicted. He’s still goes by James, not Captain, and both of his hands are present and accounted for.

“Hook is still very selfish. A little maniacal and crazy. We’ll see about the future. This is a very fun place to start.” explained Hedlund who has signed on for multiple adventures.

“He learned everything he knows from Blackbeard. He’s the Blackbeard we all know and love. He’s the most notorious and villainous and caves blood and death in the giddiest ways,” he continued.

Hedlund followed up his description of Blackbeard with some thoughts on the man bringing him to life. “Hugh’s the nicest guy around. It’s refreshing to see and that is completely true. He’s nicest guy you’ll ever meet.“ 



Throughout the day we’ll learn this is a recurring theme with anyone fortunate enough to get to work with Jackman. 



While Hook’s relationship with Peter is somewhat suspect due to Hook’s inherent coldheartedness and own needs, Hedlund’s relationship with his young co-star was that of a friend and mentor. 

“I enjoy helping. I try to simplify things and offer moral support. It’s easy to forget that someone’s 11. Levi’s a smart boy. No fear. No qualms. He’s scared to swim but not scared to play Peter Pan.” 



After our chat with Hedlund, we leave the dining bus and meet Peter himself who’s waiting for us at nearby picnic table.



Levi Miller was found in Australia during an exhaustive world-wide search for Peter. He’s naturally charming with a sly grin that let’s you know he’s always up for some mischief. He easily starts chatting with the group of grown ups who’ve swarmed his table but you never get the sense that he’s working the crowd. You realize right away that he’s the perfect Peter Pan.


Asked if he were scared to step into such an iconic role, Miller said “When I got the call I freaked out.”



“The call” came from Director Joe Wright who wanted to personally let Miller know he was going to be Peter. 



“Everyone’s been so lovely. It’s like a town here,” he said. “Garrett is like an older brother. Hugh is a good friend of mine.”



And then there’s a bit of a crush on Rooney Mara that we won’t get into. 



As we wrapped up our chat with Levi, he gave some advice for what to expect on the rest of visit.



“The ships are awesome. Don’t sit on the cannons.”

Before departing Leavesden, we are lead into the soundstage to watch Hedlund and Miller shoot a scene deep in the mines. By the franticness of Hook and Peter, you know they being chased as Hook half encourages Peter to leap/half shoves him down a mine shaft to enable their getaway.


As soon as the cameras stop rolling, Hedlund and Miller revert to themselves and that bond you see between a brother and his younger sibling is instantly apparent. If it weren’t for the crew and set, you’d think they were just a couple of kids having a backyard adventure and letting their imaginations run wild. 



About an hour from Leavesden Studios are the Cardington Stages. Erected in the middle of the English countryside, these absolutely massive structures once served as an airship manufacturing facility. 



Each building is colloquially referred to as a shed but to give a modern sense of scale, Cardington would make a great garage for an aircraft carrier. The sheds are that big. 



At the moment though, it is the home of Neverland.



Upon arriving at Cardington, we’re first taken to craft services for lunch. Neverland is too big to explore on an empty stomach. 

As we settle in, the dining hall has all the excitement of a school cafeteria during finals week.



Then pirates showed up.


All 250 of them.

They are the most spectacular, well dressed pirates you’ve ever seen and they do a great job of forming an orderly queue. For them, this is simply their lunch break during a normal work day but for us it was an incredible sight. It was as if a pirate ship had just docked outside. 



We can’t help but stare and point out our favorites. Once they realize our attention is squarely on them, many of the pirates get into character and play to their audience much to our delight. 

It was a great warm up for what was to follow.


The first thing you do when you step into Neverland is to pick your jaw off the floor.


Then you pick it up again.


All the CGI in the world can’t compare to an intensely detailed and hand built set that stretches the length of several football fields. As we make our way though the forest that was built from the ground up, our instincts tell us to buddy up for it could be extremely easy to get lost exploring the cavernous space.



Eventually, we find the pirate ships. 

They were easy to spot because three full size pirate ships are a hard thing to miss when they are parked in the middle of a room, even if it is one of the biggest rooms on the entire planet.



We’re lead onto the deck of the Jolly Roger, the ship Hook is destined to steal, and we are transported to another place and time. Various trophies are strewn about the deck. There are some 18th century relics alongside a mangled postman’s bicycle from the 1940s. No era is safe from a flying pirate ship and one can only imagine how terrified that poor postman must have been when the Jolly Roger swooped in like death from above. 



While the Jolly Roger was the most completely constructed ship, some of the details of Blackbeard’s vessel were left to the artists who wield Wacom tablets rather than hammers and nails as nubs of mast and bow are wrapped in blue screen materiel. There’s no doubt the finished product will be a perfect blend of physical and digital. 


Not far from the shadow of the Jolly Roger, we meet Director Joe Wright and Rooney Mara. They’re setting up to film part of the climatic showdown with Blackbeard and his gang.



Despite a lack of experience in an action oriented role, Mara quickly adapted and fell into her character describing Tiger Lilly as a ‘hippy, punk tree-hugger.’ 



“It’s been challenging fun. I feel like I’m with the stunt people all the time,” she said.



While coy to divulge more details about playing Blackbeard’s foe, she did intimate that her favorite weapon has been a boomerang ax and that being afraid of heights has made for some challenges on set. 



Upon hearing that comment, Wright jumps into apologize, explaining that he didn’t know. 



The calm mood between director and star ahead of shooting such a key scene is a natural byproduct of the way Wright runs his sets. 



“People are at their most creative when they’re relaxed. You can’t be stressed and be creative,” he says. 



Considering the amount of creativity we witnessed in only a single day, one must think that Wright sent his entire crew to a month-long transcendental meditation retreat before production started. 



He tells us that he saw Pan as great opportunity to go into the fantasy area and take a trip back to childhood. He really pushed the artists beyond their standby greys and blues to make their world a lot more colorful. 


Most colorful of all is the man dressed in black from wig to toe. 


“Hugh has brought a lot of humor. He’s very funny,” says Mara. “He’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Just a great person to model yourself after.” 



And seemingly right on cue, Blackbeard himself strides over to say hello.

In full Blackbeard regalia, Hugh Jackman strikes an imposing figure. He’s much taller than you’d imagine but his smile and charm immediately cast away any trepidation and fear about being in the presence of such a notorious villain. 



As Jackman makes his way through our group warmly shaking everyone’s hand, you can’t help but feel like you just met the nicest man in show business.



He’s ready to go to work so he’s off to set with Wright and Rooney. 

We watch from a monitor as Jackman is rigged up to a thin wire anchored to a clip hidden within his costume. He’s promptly hoisted a good 50 feet in the air and plays with his sword as he waits for Wright to call action. When he does, Jackman floats down one of his ships lines as pirates brawl all around him. He walks directly to camera and sneers. Blackbeard has come to life.



Wright yells ‘Cut!’ and Jackman is pulled back up into position. As the crew readies for the next take, dance music starts bumping. This is all part of Wright’s mantra of keeping a relaxed set. 

After watching a few more takes, each with nuanced changes, our group quietly makes our way off the set so as not to disturb the cast and crew. 



But there’s one person who won’t let us leave with out a proper goodbye. 



It’s Hugh Jackman.



He’s dangling dangerously high above the deck of his ship wildly waving his sword as if he’s trying to coax a plane to land.

“Thanks for coming by!” he yells.


It’s a perfect end to our trip to Neverland.



Pan opens at Regal Cinemas everywhere July 24.

LOL - so Blackbeard is not dressed in pewter ( a little close) nor bronze ( must be the trick of the light) but in intimidating black!

Yep, it's official. New release date, as per Variety, Hollywood Reporter and others is October 9, ostensibly to avoid a crowded summer marketplace.
