The competition on release date in July of 2015 would have been ANTMAN, another superhero fantasy film. www.boxofficemojo.com/schedule/?view=bydate&release=all&date=2015-07-03&showweeks=5&p=.htmBut -- So, people are expecting delays in prep and filming of ANTMAN, leading to a postponement of its original release date. Does Marvel have another movie that would be ready and can take that slot? Hmmm...as superhero action movies take a long time to prep and film, as well as work on post ( due to CGIs) -- maybe there is no immediate replacement yet? Good for PAN! Jo

One of the character actors ( Nonso Anozie) who plays "Bishop", Blackbeard's First Mate, is interviewed about Pan -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaDaTtjpi_g&sns=twHe says filming has started but he won't join it till June ( maybe because Hugh won't be filming till then) but has been in the rehearsals. He calls Hugh playing Blackbeard as "deliciously evil", a character one loves to hate Jo

It looks like pirate stories are coming up soon on TV -- here's a trailer of an upcoming NBC show CROSSBONES, with Blackbeard portrayed by John Malkovich: www.slashfilm.com/crossbones-trailer/Except JM's Blackbeard is now an old man ( Blackbeard is supposed to have died fairly young), bald and sporting a white beard smiley-rolleyes010 ...He sorts of reminds me of Yul Brynner in THE KING AND I I wonder when Hugh will start filming his version of the charismatic former privateer and now megalomaniac Blackbeard in PAN? Jo It looks like we got wind of the Malkovich TV series ( if the next ones after the pilot are not cancelled) since April. I like Malkovich in his younger days - Empire of the Sun, with the very young Christian Bale, was one of my favorites. But I hope his eccentric portrayal will not ruin expectations for the more straightforward origin story of Peter and his encounters with the "mesmerizing and Svengali-like" megalomaniac Blackbeard. Hopefully it might even whet the appetite for a longer story on this famous pirate of long ago! From the article on the pilot episode -- What The Wrap was saying was that what might work in movies may not necessarily work in serial entertainment, as it deals with the fictional story of this real-life pirate. Hope Joe Wright's cinematic vision is going to hold the attention of worldwide audiences a great deal more Jo

He looks like he's playing Ming the Merciless...or maybe taking part in a politically incorrect production of THE KING AND I. Whether or not a wig is forthcoming, he has an interesting look so far. Ellen

He does come from the right side of the world -- this part of the planet is called, sometimes officially, as AUSTRALASIA Lincoln Center would die if they could cast him as the next incarnation of the King of Siam in the forthcoming production of THE KING AND I. And I might just change my belief that no one could ever replace the masculinity and arrogance of a Yul Brynner as KING! Jo

Very interesting look -- the pirate Blackbeard was described in the script as "mesmerizing, Svengali-like" and his new film persona does evoke that kind of scary but almost charismatic look! As for Hugh going bald - nothing amazes me now. This is less shocking now because we saw him go bald in THE FOUNTAIN ...But even in that film, I got used to the shaven head after a while. There is even one photo which I liked a lot. Jo

The image is making the rounds of film and entertainment sites now, including People.com which wants to see him in full costume -- stylenews.peoplestylewatch.com/2014/06/10/hugh-jackman-shaves-head-new-movie-pan/I share the impatience. Blackbeard is supposed to be very flamboyant, too. I think Hugh is going to give us a strong "character" interpretation of the famed ( but did exist in real life) former English privateer of the 19th century. It definitely sets his "pirate" quite apart from the almost whimsical character of Jack Sparrow ( which was supposedly originally inspired by Hugh himself, hence the name of "Jack" Sparrow -- this according to the film's original screenwriter Stuart Beattie, who is also Australian).

The new look has already drawn -- 35305 likes 2926 comments from his Instagram posting. I think quite a few, not familiar with how Hugh changes his hairstyle for movie roles, would be quite shocked

It is quite amusing to see so many varied reactions to the new look ( as if we have not gotten used to Hugh with all kinds of hairstyles for movie roles - LOL) -- but this one even makes an effort to dissect it further ..and even comes up with a few graphic comparisons www.bustle.com/articles/27619-hugh-jackman-goes-bald-for-blackbeard-his-new-look-reminds-us-of-these-6-thingsAnd from the same blog, this one caught my eye -- He may not have been rewarded yet with an Oscar, but his Oscar-nominated role of Jean Valjean is already living proof that he can hold his own with the best-decorated such as DDLewis... and while the Grammy-nominated soundtrack of LES MISERABLES ( of which he is the principal singing voice, with 4 majestic solos) may not have won the prize, I thought it deserved the distinction. It did capture the pop culture imagination, having landed as No. 1 in the Billboard charts on its first week. "the living vesion of an EGOT" is rightfully used to describe Hugh Jackman! Jo

This look will not help me "convert" friends out here who think Hugh is "y'know - an OK, 'average' looking guy."
Aside: Just loaned my Australia DVD to the one who rattled off a list of C/W singers who are (in her opinion) MUCH more attractive than Hugh.

Ah, wait 'til they get a load of the Drover, especially when he's all cleaned up for the ball. Bet they'll change their tune--to "Hey, Good Lookin'."

In the movie PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN, Blackbeard was one of the pirates. He looked like this -- He looked much closer to the historical visualization of the character -- The Jason Fuchs script paints an even more calculating and fierce image, but he is also described as "mesmerizing and Svengali-like" ! Of course, this is not the complete picture yet -- we have to see him in full costume ( It would be exciting to see how Joe Wright and his costume designer Jacqueline Duran visualize his look - they were an Oscar-winning team for Anna Karenina) -- and with his height and muscular build ( although that could be almost hidden by the coat Blackbeard wore), he is going to look magnificent ( as pirates go )! Hugh's Blackbeard looks like a more interesting and fascinating character ( fearsome, handsome in a sly kind of way, vain, calculating, probably scary-looking for kids) -- and if Hugh does wonders with his wide speaking voice range - he is going to be one memorable film character!
