A website noted how weird the Blackbeard look is --












*He is obviously wearing a wig to hide his secret ( a bald pate) -- it looks like the wig was actually meant to make him look creepy.

*And we know he is also weird-looking  with his bald head, although with that earring, he does look malevolent but somewhat mesmerizing.

*Is he wearing teeth prosthetics ( like he did in Les Miserables) except here, it makes him look more frightening.  Maybe that was also why his vocal range has deepened ( " Well, well, well!!...")

*Look at his vain look - the rings on his fingers and the unusual Spanish-conquistador looking costume, all in black. And that earring which looks like a fashion statement - LOL!

*Is there a mole ( a fashion mole, if he were a woman) on his cheek?




LOL- Depp was weird but was amusing in Pirates of the Carribean ...while Hugh looks weird and althogether thoroughly frightening in PAN

Depp did get an Oscar nod as Capt Jack Sparrow ( a character supposedly written by S. Beatty with Hugh in mind) -- hmmm...

WB has announced they're moving Pan's release a week later in July 2015...and away from its previous head-to-head Ant-Man rival.


Despite having arguably the best trailerof Thanksgiving weekend, Warner Bros. announced today that they are moving Pan one weekend later than its initial release. The picture is now scheduled to open on July 24, 2015, one week after its initial July 17, 2015 release date.

The cause for this move is likely to avoid a head-to-head with that weekend’s other occupant, Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man, which despite much production woe is definitely now making that date.

Still, fans of Pan will not have to wait long to see Hugh Jackman ham it up as the villainous Blackbeard, or Rooney Mara hopefully justify why she, a very talented actress, was cast as Tiger Lily in this reimagining of J.M. Barrie’s classic story.

For a reminder of the intriguing approach by director Joe Wright, watch the trailer below in anticipation for the now July 24th release.

Looking back at the Wiki notes pages at the start of this thread --

Edward Teach (c. 1680 – 22 November 1718), better known as Blackbeard, was a notorious English pirate who operated around the West Indies and the eastern coast of the American colonies. Although little is known about his early life, he was probably born in Bristol, England. He may have been a sailor on privateer ships during Queen Anne's War before settling on the Bahamian island of New Providence, a base for Captain Benjamin Hornigold, whose crew Teach joined sometime around 1716. Hornigold placed him in command of a sloop he had captured, and the two engaged in numerous acts of piracy. Their numbers were boosted by the addition to their fleet of two more ships, one of which was commanded by Stede Bonnet, but toward the end of 1717 Hornigold retired from piracy, taking two vessels with him.

Teach captured a French merchant vessel, renamed her Queen Anne's Revenge, and equipped her with 40 guns. He became a renowned pirate, his cognomen derived from his thick black beard and fearsome appearance; he was reported to have tied lit fuses under his hat to frighten his enemies. He formed an alliance of pirates and blockaded the port of Charleston, South Carolina. After successfully ransoming its inhabitants, he ran Queen Anne's Revenge aground on a sandbar near Beaufort, North Carolina. He parted company with Bonnet, settling in Bath Town, where he accepted a royal pardon. But he was soon back at sea and attracted the attention of Alexander Spotswood, the Governor of Virginia. Spotswood arranged for a party of soldiers and sailors to try to capture the pirate, which they did on 22 November 1718. During a ferocious battle, Teach and several of his crew were killed by a small force of sailors led by Lieutenant Robert Maynard.

A shrewd and calculating leader, Teach spurned the use of force, relying instead on his fearsome image to elicit the response he desired from those he robbed. Contrary to the modern-day picture of the traditional tyrannical pirate, he commanded his vessels with the permission of their crews and there is no known account of his ever having harmed or murdered those he held captive. He was romanticised after his death and became the inspiration for a number of pirate-themed works of fiction across a range of genres.

Yes, he did have a romanticized image of a fearsome-looking pirate but who ruled the seas with the reputation of a modern management man

However, based on the script by Jason Fuchs in the origin story PAN...and based on the trailer...Blackbeard seemed a little more tyrannical. However, his initial dealings with Peter ( to discover the secret with which Blackbeard had megalomaniac intentions) were persuasive and, on the surface,kind. His true colors come out as he becomes more and more agitated about his ambitions.

We'll see how Joe Wright's own cinematic vision and Hugh Jackman's characterization present the true image of this real-life pirate

Because the example that best illustrates that the joy of a father and son communing at the movies is still emphatically around is shown at the end of the article, as follows :

When I started this project, I wondered if someday my kids would even ever want to go to the movies, and if the whole idea would be obsolete by then. I think I found my answer.

I sat next to a young kid of about 4 or 5 and his father at the second to last movie, Black or White (January 31). As the trailer for Pan popped up, full of flying ships and a snarling Hugh Jackman and dancing pirates, I heard a “Whoa!” come up from the son. Then he turned to his father and said, “Dad, can we see this here?”

"Sweet, piercing sweet was the music of Pan's pipe" reads the caption on this depiction of Pan.

The pipes he plays are replicated on the pendant that Peter wears...as well as the new artistic configuration of the movie title.

Barrie never described Peter's appearance in detail, even in the novel Peter and Wendy (1911), leaving much of it to the imagination of the reader and the interpretation of anyone adapting the character. Barrie mentions in Peter and Wendy that Peter Pan still had all his "first teeth".[2] He describes him as a beautiful boy with a beautiful smile, "clad in skeleton leaves and the juices that flow from trees".[3] In the play, Peter's outfit is made of autumn leaves and cobwebs.[4] His name and playing the flute or pipes suggest the mythological character Pan.

Nothing to do with Hugh, or this movie specifically, but since we've wandered down this tangent, here's a thought -

JM Barrie came from a large family. I believe he had 8-9 siblings. According to some biographical info -

When he was 6 years old, Barrie's next-older (there were a few girls in between) brother David (his mother's favourite) died two days before his 14th birthday in an ice-skating accident. This left his mother devastated, and Barrie tried to fill David's place in his mother's attentions, even wearing David's clothes and whistling in the manner that he did. One time Barrie entered her room, and heard her say "Is that you?" "I thought it was the dead boy she was speaking to" wrote Barrie in his biographical account of his mother, Margaret Ogilvy (1896), "and I said in a little lonely voice, 'No, it's no' him, it's just me.'" Barrie's mother found comfort in the fact that her dead son would remain a boy forever, never to grow up and leave her.

I think Barrie's own brother may have been the inspiration for his eternally youthful character, Peter Pan, and, if so, he certainly succeeded in immortalizing the memory and spirit of his sibling.

(I haven't seen the movie Finding Neverland in a long time, nor have I seen the new stage musical. Is any of this mentioned in either?)

I wonder how James Barrie might have felt if he had known that in this origin story of PAN, Peter's mother is given a key role ( portrayed by Amanda Seyfried), albeit briefly.

How is PAN going to differentiate itself from all other adapations ?

For one, it focuses on the origin story of Peter and how he eventually became Peter Pan.

It introduces a new main character, in the person of the pirate Blackbeard. It casts Tiger Lily in a more feisty role. It puts Peter and James Hook as allies, something that people think  may be unthinkable,  given how they will end up in their relationship in some other time

.

The setting of the movie is more visually appealing! Hopefully, the main cast delivers more remarkable performances compared to previous adaptations.
