Lauren Bacall died of a massive stroke earlier today at the age of 89. She was one of the last great "movie stars" of the 40's. Her career, both in film and on the stage, spanned decades.
Two great ones gone in less than 24 hours - how sad.

Oh my, another icon gone. Bacall was one of the last from The Golden Age of Hollywood, and she took a few turns on the stage as well. I'm sorry to hear she's gone - but what an amazing life she had! Rest in peace. More - with a nice photo slideshow

Lauren Bacall shone shimmeringly in the Hollywood firmament...and was later active in the New York theatre community. I can't find the references now but I remember that she was a fan of Broadway Hugh ...She was there in the audience for Back on Broadway...but sadly she will not be around anymore for Hugh's new play. Rest in peace, Ms. Betty!

And how could I have forgotten -- I saw her on Broadway in CACTUS FLOWER! I guess my memory cells were playing tricks because the version I remembered had Ingrid Bergman in the lead but that was for the film adaptation...and I had forgotten that I had seen the earlier Broadway staging with Lauren PS: I was also lucky to have seen Ingrid on Broadway ( I remember that I was sitting on the front row and could almost touch her long skirt because the stage was so low) - it was a drama with Arthur Hill ( More Stately Mansions). Lauren Bacall had true star charisma--and temperament, if all those stories I've read on theater sites are accurate, LOL. But that seemed to be part of her charm for many. She was a fabulous siren on screen and on stage exuded pizazz. She might not have possessed a great singing voice, but her sheer star power earned her two Tonys for Broadway musicals. May she rest in peace.

This has certainly been a sad week in the world of entertainment. I always loved Lauren Bacall. She exuded sex and class equally which is extremely rare. One of the last remaining stars of a bygone era. They are all getting on in years so I'm hoping not to see a domino effect. One of Hugh's Tony performances always made me wonder...I saw a glimpse of someone in the audience and was never quite sure if it was Lauren Bacall or Kathleen Turner. They have a similar look, at least to me. It was his I won't dance medley and the glimpse happens near the end during the ovation, at about 6:12. I used to laugh because played at regular speed she looks like she wants to eat him up (salacious intent here) but I've tried to freeze frame it & I'm still not sure which of them it is. Maybe someone who was there might remember. I don't know if we talked about this before but if we did it was years ago so it's worth another look. RIP Lauren Bacall

Sue, I never tire of that fabulous medley. Thanks for posting. My eyes tell me that was Kathleen Turner, but I agree that she and the late Ms. Bacall shared some facial similarities.

Ellen Thanks, Ellen I wasn't sure. I love the medley too and how much fun Hugh seemed to have doing it! That salacious look always cracks me up...there are probably numerous other women in the audience with similar looks on their faces when Hugh performs. LOL! Sue

That medley has lived quite a life -- *It was inaugurated by Hugh at his one-man concert for WynnLasVegas. It was supposed to have been put together by John Lachiusa, if I am not mistaken. *During the rehearsals for the 2005 TONYs, it seemed that the original number did not satisfy the creative minds, including Hugh. Hugh decided to do the medley instead! *On "Back on Broadway", that was another stunning number during the early part of the show. Presumably, he sang it again in Hollywood when he reprised the one-man show on his birthday last year. When will Hugh reincarnate this crowd pleaser once again Jo
