I'm sure he has plenty of irons in the fire and wouldn't return to a project that wasn't working out for him.

They are probably different circumstances - but Hugh did return to the PRISONERS project ( which seemed a sure thing initially as he had told some people that he would be filming in Connecticut after the run of A STEADY RAIN), after he left it and a few others looked at the role ( including DiCaprio), before Hugh decided once again that he wanted to be Keller Dover.
But maybe the parting of ways on the Houdini project had been of a different nature.

Looks like the HOUDINI project has basically been dropped. Because of Hugh's pulling out? Or maybe Hugh was prescient enough to see it was going nowhere. From a BWW interview (PC are the initials of the interviewer) with Stephen Schwartz:
"PC: Are you still involved with HOUDINI?
SS: I honestly don't know what the story is with that. I mean, currently, I am not working on that at all.
PC: He's in the zeitgeist right now it seems, especially with the recent TV miniseries.
SS: Yes, there is a lot about him out there - I know. But, I don't exactly know if anything will wind up happening with that."
- Looks like Hugh got out when the going was good.

To be honest, I think Hugh realized after being patient for so many years that working with Stephen Schwartz in the latter phases was not going to work out because while Hugh was schedule-bound ( even if his involvement with the project has been since 2008/2009), maybe SS did not feel time-bound to complete the project within practical timetables. I guess creative persons do not follow their muses all at the same pace ( I always use Lloyd Webber as the opposite example - despite health issues, he has been more productive).
Schwartz can always recycle his melodies to another new show smiley-rolleyes010
And maybe the financial legacies of Wicked ( and to some extent a few other of his shows) gives him the luxury of taking his time.

Looks like Hugh was wise to jump ship when he did.

But the relations with director Jack O'Brien must have continued to be warm-- Hugh and Deb attended a cabaret by Jack at Studio 54 to celebrate his long years in the theatrical business! Will Hugh ever get the chance to work with one of theatre's foremost directors - he has TONYs for both musical and classical theatre! Jo

The back story of what went wrong with the HOUDINI project -- www.nytimes.com/2015/01/11/theater/the-musical-houdini-travels-a-bumpy-path.html?_r=1*This back story could be the subject of a play or a new musical itself *During the period Hugh was attached to the project ( I remember him saying at the stagedoor of the Schoenfeld in 2009 that "HOUDINI was being re-written" at that time) to 2013, he had starred in A STEADY RAIN, also in REAL STEEL, in his one-man show ( from San Francisco to Broadway via Toronto), as Valjean in the film adaptation of LES MISERABLES which was another stage musical that took decades to adapt to the screen, as THE WOLVERINE which also suffered many delays before filming actually took place, and in PRISONERS ( ironically, he also left the project after he was first attached to it sometime in 2009 and returned to film it in 2013). *GREATEST SHOWMAN also took a long laborious route before getting the greenlight from FOX studio. In this case, it was again the star power of Jackman ( and also being the key figure in the studio's most lucrative franchise) which kept the project going. While still in pre-production, there is now a firm start to filming ( September 2015, according to Hugh at the CITS stagedoor) and even a Christmas Day 2016 release date. *If by some luck, HOUDINI reinvents magic and eventually works, would the producers pursue the once-and-future Broadway magic-man, named Hugh Jackman, once again? Fascinating story. Too bad it didn't work out. They couldn't expect Hugh, with his full schedule of commitments, to hang on while the creative team changed over and over again. Still, I wonder how he'd have sung those Schwartz songs. We'll likely never hear him perform them.

Seeing that photo supposedly of Houdini underneath the water in the tank -- shudder!
I'd hate to see Hugh be like that in 8 shows a week! Okay in a movie, but in a musical on Broadway - No, No, No!!!

From a twitter exchange discussing Houdini -- Fully clothed - LOL! Didn't Houdini perform less clothed Singing - sigh! I guess we can't get even a brief glimpse or Steven Schwartz may post a notice on copyright infringement. I do remember that Hugh completed workshops for the first act of the musical. But Schwartz was taking so long and Hugh had t leave the project because of a forthcoming film project. This must be late 2011 or early 2012? I remember that we lunched at the Rotunda in San Francisco ( time of the first tryout for Back on Broadway) and the waiter sort of shared that he served Hugh and Aaron Sorkin ( who was writing the book for the musical) lunch the day before. That was April 2011. If I am not mistaken, Hugh left the project maybe because he just got the chance to be in Les Misérables ( started filming in early 2012)? Jo
