It looks like he is not done filming -- www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2156137/Fast-Girl-Lily-James-run-big-screen-straight-ITVs-hit-drama-Downton-Abbey.htmlquote: Hugh Jackman, who will leave the set of the musical Les Miserables tomorrow night to fly to New York where, on Sunday night, he’ll receive a special Tony Award for his considerable charitable work.
‘I’ll probably have to retire,’ he joked of the honour, when we chatted on the Les Miserables set at Pinewood studios, where he’d been working with Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen, who play the notorious inn-keepers the Thenardiers.
Jackman will return to London on Monday to resume filming with director Tom Hooper on the screen version of the hit stage musical created by Claude-Michel Schonberg, Alain Boublil, Herbert Kretzmer and Cameron Mackintosh — with a little help from Victor Hugo.

From the Tony Awards website!!! Broadway superstar Hugh Jackman, who is receiving a Special Tony Award® this year, will be returning to New York City from filming the Les Misérables movie in time to attend Sunday night's Tony Awards ceremony. The Tonys will air on CBS at 8/7c on Sunday June 10, hosted for the third year by Neil Patrick Harris....and, as if we needed it, more confirmation from The Hollywood Reporter -- The actor, who portrays Jean Valjean in the upcoming Broadway-to-big screen adaptation, will attend Sunday's ceremony in New York City.Hugh Jackman will attend Sunday's Tony Awards to receive an award for his contributions to the Broadway community, THR confirms.
The triple-threat actor is heading to New York City's Beacon Theater, where the event will be broadcast live on CBS, from the London set of Les Miserables, in which he portrays Jean Valjean to Russell Crowe's Inspector Javert. (Last week, Universal Pictures released a stirring Anne Hathaway-centric trailer, and it promises all sorts of epic-ness and perhaps some Oscars, too. The film arrives Dec. 14, as awards season gathers steam.) I just knew he'd have to be there "in the flesh" for this! ;D Full article: www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hugh-jackman-les-miserables-tonys-335178...and from an obvious fan at The Washington Post Established reason aside, my hopes are now sky-high that Jackman will give us a taste of “Les Mis” and perform a Jean Valjean number at the Tonys. Even one refrain, Hugh! Full article (and a bit of Hugh and Neil's 2011 duet) www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/celebritology/post/hugh-jackman-will-attend-tony-awards/2012/06/08/gJQAYISiNV_blog.html

I think he will tease a little but a full performance is impossible, imo. But it is still a great promotion for Les MIz Anyway, I´ll have to watch at least two days later because, of course, I am not going to watch it in the middle of the night when I have to work in the morning But I am sure his bit will be on youtube soon enough

Quite a list of names here, some interesting and a few a bit odd -- The broadcast, which begins at 8 PM ET on CBS, boasts a diverse array of presenters, including Ellen Barkin, Candice Bergen, Jessica Chastain, Ben Vereen, Sheryl Crow, Nick Jonas, Angela Lansbury, James Marsden, Jim Parsons, Mandy Patinkin, Tyler Perry, Christopher Plummer, Paul Rudd, Amanda Seyfried, Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Matthew Morrison, Josh Groban and Cote de Pablo. Of course, *our* favorite moment will be... Jackman is being honored for his "contributions to the Broadway community, both as a performer and humanitarian; his tireless dedication to charitable works of many types; and his personal generosity of spirit." Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival, announced today that Hugh Jackman will host the main event when Tropfest takes over New York City June 21-23. Tropfest began twenty years ago when Director John Polson (Hide & Seek, Tenderness) showed a six-minute film he made for under $100 at his local café in Sydney, Australia, for 200 guests. Today the annual free festival in Sydney receives thousands of submissions, is attended by more than 150,000 people and watched live via satellite by hundreds of thousands more. This summer Tropfest arrives in the U.S. beginning with a weekend of activities at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, June 1-3, celebrating Tropfest’s 20th birthday and featuring an “All Star Competition” hosted by Rob Corddry. Three weeks later, Tropfest New York will present a short film competition as the centerpiece for a weekend long event. The festivities will also include musical performances, film screenings, and a filmmaker symposium called “Roughcut,” before culminating in a spectacular event under the stars at Bryant Park, where finalists will be screened and judged live by a panel of celebrities and industry experts lead by host, Hugh Jackman. “Knowing that Tropfest has opened doors for brilliant filmmakers, actors and others for the past 20 years, I’m proud to be a part of the festival as it expands its reach to the U.S. and brings its competition to New York,” said Jackman. “As a mecca of the arts, New York is a perfect host for a festival that empowers creative minds to try their hand at filmmaking.” Like Tropfest, Jackman got his start in Australia where he starred in the independent films “Paperback Hero” and “Erskineville Kings” (Australian Film Critics’ Circle Best Actor award and The Australian Film Institute Best Actor nomination). Since then, Jackman has become a critically acclaimed actor and performer, Tony Award and Emmy Award Winner, starring in major blockbusters like the “X-Men” franchise and “Reel Steel.” Jackman is currently in production on the much-anticipated film adaptation of “Les Miserables,” set for a December 2012 release, directed by Tom Hooper (of “The King’s Speech”), and co-starring Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway. Following, he will return to Australia to film the next chapter of the Wolverine saga, appropriately titled “The Wolverine.” “Hugh has been a great supporter of Tropfest and we could not be more delighted to have him on board,” said Polson. “He is one of the greatest talents on stage and screen today and he embodies the type of creativity and passion we hope the competition will inspire.” Tropfest has a reputation for placing creativity, ingenuity and strength of idea above production values and budgets, with some of Tropfest’s most powerful entries shot on mobile phones for just a few dollars. The event has helped launch the careers of dozens of successful directors, writers, and actors. Festival alumni include: Sam Worthington (Avatar, Last Night); Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby, Warrior, Animal Kingdom); Alister Grierson (director of the James Cameron-produced Sanctum); and Jason Gann and Tony Rogers, whose Tropfest short, Wilfred, was the genesis of the popular U.S. TV series of the same name starring Elijah Wood. Now, Americans have the opportunity to take part in this global phenomenon and see their short film screened in front of a massive live and online audience, and considered for a chance to win $20,000 cash and other prizes. Due to increasing interest from American filmmakers eager to participate in the competition, Tropfest has introduced a latecomer deadline of May 17, one week after the regular May 10 deadline. All films entered must be produced specifically for the event and have their premiere at Tropfest New York; films cannot exceed seven minutes, including titles and credits; and each film must contain the Tropfest Signature Item (TSI), which this year is “bagel,” a true staple of New York culinary culture. The TSI has been part of the Tropfest ethos since the early days to show films have been made specifically for the festival. For more information about entering and the complete contest guidelines, please visit: www.tropfest.com/newyork. Tropfest USA has amassed ambassadors including Nicole Kidman, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe, Anthony Lapaglia, Liev Schreiber, and Charles Randolph. The event has traditionally received extraordinary support globally from some of the biggest stars in the international film community, including the most recent iteration of Tropfest Australia where the panel of judges and guests included Kidman, Rush, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collette, Baz Luhrmann, and Tobey Maguire. Tropfest New York will be free and open to the public however reservations are recommended. Please visit tropfestnewyork.eventbrite.com/ to reserve your space now. The main event will begin at 3:00 PM on June 23 with live music and DJs performing in the afternoon and the short film competition will begin at 8:00 PM. Tropfest New York 2012 is proudly supported by Citi, JetBlue, Thompson Hotels, Film Society of Lincoln Center, STARZ CINEMA, NBC 4, and WNYC Radio. To read the full release CLICK HERE

On CBS: did anyone else catch that short promotional clip of the Tonys a couple hours ago? It was about the telecast tonight, and featured ONLY Neil Patrick Harris and and a bit of Hugh on his "Steppin' Out" number of Back on Broadway. I thought, "Only the host... and the best." Hehe. No offense to all the other talented performers/nominees. Just biased here.

Will any forum members attend the TONYs, like other years? Just wondering, because I haven't found any posts about it.

Hugh and Deb were just interviewed on the red carpet. She looked gorgeous in feathers and long earrings. He looked magnificent, of course---even the hair is growing back nicely. The female interviewer was smitten, LOL. He spoke about how it was playing the iconic Peter Allen and that he's not quite ready to pack up the Hawaiian shirts; also about his upcoming read-through of HOUDINI. Deb said she likes it when he does Broadway because then he takes the kids to school (I guess she likes to sleep in). She also quoted that "happy wife, happy life" phrase.

Yes, that was a great moment. But even better was the supreme shock and delighted surprise on Hugh's face when he saw that it was Deb who was presenting him with his Special Tony. Could that moment have been any sweeter? I was plotzing! And it was so genuine. I dare anyone now to say that they are not a true love match.

That was incredible -- a sharing of love and success by a couple who truly love and care for each other!
Hugh's face was so shocked and so incredibly happy when he realized who was presenting his award ( what a coup for the producers!). His acceptance speech is so delightfully spontaneous and affirms his love for the stage and Broadway!
In his words, he not only affirms this commitment but he also underscored that his team ( led by long-time agent and friend Patrick Whitesell) also believe in his professional focus on both the cinema and the theatre.
I guess his role in Les Miserables best affirms this commitment - a movie musical based on a stage musical!

I never saw it, as I was watching an international feed, but did you get to see the trailer of Les Miserables showed during the intermission. I understand it was also shown at the Beacon Theatre itself!
Great publicity for the movie!

What a wonderful surprise it was to see Deb present Hugh with the TONY! How special! What a brilliant idea! It was a beautiful moment!
Jo, my second favorite moment was seeing the Godspell cast member dancing with Hugh!

Alma, I would also be curious to know if any forum members were able to get into the TONYs, because since they moved it to the Beacon Theater they no longer sell tickets to the public. The Beacon seats about 2500-3000 and Radio City's seating capacity is 6000.
Oh, and one more thing, tickets for the Tonys this year cost $750 for mezzanine seats and $1500 for orchestra seats. A lot more expensive than it was when Hugh hosted.

Cheryl, I have been to the TONYs once - in 2005 when Hugh last hosted. There is an incredible sense of community and they cheer for everyone, even if he or the play is running against their own favorite. We also stood in line together with some people ( not on the red carpet but at the other door for the hoi polloi ) and the young lady standing next to us, in a group of older folks, introduced us to her folks and friends. It seems that they were producing a small theatre play and that was the reason they were going to the show. LOL -when the play GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS was named Best Play, up trooped to the stage our newly found friends. Little did we know - LOL! Hugh is very lucky - to be both loved on stage and on screen! Jo

From some musings at The New York Times theatre section --
quote:
10:50 am From the Press Room: Hugh Jackman STEVEN MCELROY: Hugh Jackman, in the press room, talked about his wife presenting his special Tony award. He was truly surprised, he said. "I thought she was going to miss it because she'd gone to the bathroom," he said. "She hates public speaking and she can't keep a secret. It's a minor miracle that this happened."
