In the spring, but in Washington, DC. playbill.com/news/article/anthony-warlow-sets-sights-on-u.s.-revival-of-man-of-la-mancha-338866Man of La Mancha is one of my favorite musicals -- I was lucky to have seen Richard Kiley's original staging and that left me with such an indelible mark ( I still listen to the CD release). I was disappointed with the Brian Stokes Mitchell revival on Broadway - he had great vocal form but I did not like his acting interpretation. Anthony Warlow has, arguably, even better vocal form than Stokes ( Anthony crossed over from the world of opera to musical theatre) and he has the acting chops ( too bad his Broadway debut was as Daddy Warbucks). I saw him in Pirates of Penzance ( and a few DVDs - operetta, opera, concert) and I think he can give a memorable performance as Don Quixote. Will this eventually make it to Broadway? Wasn't he the lead in Doctor Zhivago, the musical, in its Australian debut and which is now rumored for a Broadway debut? Jo

Unfortunately, I'm right outside DC right now. I won't be in March. I'll be in Vegas :{

I would really like to see Warlow on stage again - and this is SO much closer than Sydney! It's a "limited run" in DC. I have not heard of any plans for Broadway, but we can always hope. Yes, he was in the revised/revamped Zhivago in Australia, but they have cast a prettier and much younger actor for the Broadway production. Typical. This is decades ago, and "just singing" on a TV show . . . how I'd love to see him *act* this role! Not the best script, but I'd LOVE to see - *hear* - him do this one on stage! (This is more recent. After surviving lymphoma, and minus his hair due to the chemotherapy.) From the Aussie production of Zhivago - -

smiley-signs101 I discovered Anthony Warlow early on so I have his first musical theatre-oriented albums. Two of the songs -- Soliloquy from Carousel/Anthem from Chess www.youtube.com/watch?v=v00lsa0_mhgwww.youtube.com/watch?v=BHwFDBXsm94He sings ( in a concert) a song from a show he was involved in in Australia -- he auditioned for Raoul but landed the role of The Phantom! Music of the Night! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fm8aSKMoZogOnce upon a time, he was Enjolras! He sang the role in the Aussie production of Les Miserables...and once again in the Complete Symphonic Rccording of Les Mis ( with Michael Ball as Marius, Philip Quast as Javert and Debra Byrne as Fantine). Here, he sings it with the original cast in a concert staging -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv4jXzn5fysThis is the role I have seen him portray onstage ( Sydney Opera House) - the Pirate King from the Gilbert & Sullivan operetta PIRATES OF PENZANCE -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2j90qg_5_w

Apparently Charles & Camilla went to see the show - - Warlow looks great in the (now classic) make-up (love that he does it on stage) and LOVE his voice! Much more info, and more videos, on the theater's website HERE.

Wow - thanks for that clip!
Anthony brings on the manic quality of Don Quixote as he struggles in his mind to achieve his quest!
I hope they release a cast recording - I was missing his "Dulcinea" - Anthony can sound so soulful when singing a quiet romantic ballad.
I'd better check out the website, in case there are more.
PS: Many faulted the Broadway revival with Brian Stokes Mitchell as being too grandiose ( set was overwhelming) when the story should be told with more simplicity. In the original production I saw ( with Richard Kiley), it was like a theatre in the round with a bare set. The story is actually told by Miguel Cervantes to his co-inmates when he was imprisoned for heretical work during the infamous Spanish Inquisition (remember those horrible scenes of torture in THE FOUNTAIN?)...and the play is enacted by his co-prisoners. Very simply told but very effectively staged!
I was wondering if this could be staged, like that original production, at Circle in the Square? While this is a dream role for me for Hugh, Anthony is an excellent second choice. He has the flamboyance of his former opera background to portray this famous figure from Spanish literature!
