This is "no-shave November" here in Australia; a time when men look bad -- in my case, really bad -- for a good cause. Mo-vember moustaches have blighted many of our upper lips as a way of raising consciousness and contributions in the fight to stop prostate cancer and improve male mental health. My protection detail got started on November 1, and so they are currently sporting a collection of Fu Manchus, goatees, soul patches, and some mangy beards and peach fuzz. In their black suits and ties, they look like a bikie gang on their way to court for a parole hearing. I got started a bit later, because no one -- least of all Secretary of State Clinton -- needed to see me looking like Kris Kristoferson first thing in the morning during ministerial meetings.


Yesterday i got some lessons in facial hair growth from the Wolverine himself (he's recommended either a professional make-up artist or a skin graft). But if it helps men remember to get a prostate exam, or for people to support cancer research, then I am happy to accept some scorn and abuse. To find out more about Mo-vember click here.

2:19PM EST December 2. 2012 - NEW YORK -- In Les Miserables, the chorus proclaims, "Do you hear the people sing?"

But Hugh Jackman, star of the film adaptation of the long-running musical that opens on Dec. 25, was humming a different tune at the press days for the expected Oscar contender this weekend: "Do you hear the people sip?"

To spread the word for his recently launched line of Laughing Man Coffee & Tea, the actor installed a barista bar near the hospitality suite where reporters sampled flat whites, an espresso-based variation on a latte popular in Jackman's native Australia and nearby New Zealand, complete with foam heart on top.

He began the company, whose proceeds all go to charity, much like Paul Newman's Newman's Own line of food, after an encounter with an Ethiopian coffee grower.

Those who had one-on-one interviews with Jackman were also handed a "goody bag" sampler of his wares. The products are available at two locations in the Big Apple as well as online at livelaughingman.com.

Last month, Jackman brought his Laughing Man brew to the New York-based set of Noah, the biblical drama headlined by Les Mis foil Russell Crowe. The fellow Aussie effusively tweeted his praises: "If you are in NY, great news!! The Laughing Man on Duane Street serves FLAT WHITES!! HaHa Hallelujah!! Best Coffee I've had since home!!"

Crowe clarified later: "A Flat White is a coffee … an excellent coffee. Laughing Man in Duane Street & and other places set up by @realhughjackman … ladies, form a line."

The charitable 44-year-old actor was struck by the plight of St Mary the Virgin church in Ewelme, Oxon, where he filmed scenes for Tom Hooper's new musical drama 'Les Miserables', and organised for producers to pay to fund the building's new heating system.

The Rev Jonathan Meyer told The Daily Star newspaper: 'The spiritual message of the film brought everyone together.'

Generous Hugh also impressed his co-stars - who included Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried - with his kind-hearted nature because he kept everyone's spirits up on set during the gruelling shoot by treating them to fun gifts.

"Wolverine is for Haiti, a hundred percent," the Australian star told E! News last night at an event for Donna Karan's Urban Zen organization, which with eBay is auctioning off original papier-mache hearts, crafted by her designer pals, to benefit the Haitian Artisan Project.

"All of us feel really blessed, we've had amazing career opportunities, and one of the things that allows us to do is go to incredible places and use our profile to help," Jackman, who also happened to be celebrating his 17th wedding anniversary, told us, wife Deborra-Lee Furness at his side. (Neither of them would divulge their anniversary plans, though, darn it.)

"I consider it a privilege, not a duty, and I have children—we all have children," Jackman added, looking at his wife, "and trying to teach that to our kids, being part of a community, your world, and doing whatever you can is actually your birthright. It's actually what we're all naturally meant to do."

This year, the short film festival will be held on a summer evening at Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

Liev is an Aussie by osmosis ...His partner is Naomi Watts and they have two gorgeous boys!

Also, I think his being a stage actor gives him a handle on how to relate to real-life crowds.
