Hugh Jackman: 'Full-On Caffeine Addict' to Coffee Entrepreneur
Hugh Jackman’s coffee brand, Laughing Man Coffee, is the result of a promise the actor made to a farmer in 2009.

If you’re surprised to learn that Hugh Jackman has a coffee brand, you should know that that coffee is in the actor’s Australian heritage. “Everyone knows we love beer and things like that, but actually, Ozzies love coffee,” Jackman explained to The Daily Beast in 2018. “We had a huge influx of immigration after World War II from Southern Europe, and so good coffee has been something that we’ve always had, and we’re really, really snobby about it.”


Jackman describes himself as a “full-on caffeine addict,” and that trait carries over to his roles, including Wolverine of the X-Men film franchise. “Every character I’ve ever played weirdly likes the same coffee that Hugh Jackman likes. I’ll only go so far for my art,” he quipped. “Wolverine is just more caffeine because I’m training like a maniac.”

The Reminiscence star also told The Daily Beast that he read and was inspired by the books Banker to the Poor by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good by Paul Newman. “It struck me that doing a social business was probably the best way to use the profile of someone in my position,” he recalled. “So I had that in my head before I know what that business was going to be.”

During a trip to Ethiopia in 2009, Jackman met a coffee farmer named Dukale who was working 84-hour weeks to support his family. In 2011, Jackman and business partner David Steingard launched Laughing Man Coffee, which now boasts two cafés in Manhattan.


“I needed to start a business that could partner with farmers like Dukale in order to gain access to markets,” he explained to Food Tank in 2018. “Where no infrastructure existed, I had to find a way to create it through distribution and cafes in New York that would introduce Fair Trade coffee by Dukale and others directly to consumers. So, in a way it’s advocacy, and it’s also entrepreneurism, and that’s something we would like to foster more of.”

Keurig acquired Laughing Man Coffee in 2014.

In June 2015, Keurig announced a partnership with Laughing Man to take the brand nationwide through K-Cup pods. In a press release about the partnership, Keurig also announced that it acquired the Laughing Man brand from Laughing Man Worldwide the previous year.

“We started Laughing Man to fulfill a promise I made to share the amazing story of an Ethiopian coffee farmer named Dukale,” Jackman said in a statement at the time. “Six years later, it’s humbling to know, through this agreement, Dukale’s exceptional coffee, among other Laughing Man products, will be enjoyed through the convenience of the Keurig brewing system.”

According to Fast Company, the Laughing Man cafés donate their proceeds to charitable efforts supporting health, housing, and educational initiatives in fair-trade farming communities. Jackman donates all of his profits from the business to those causes, while Keurig donates an unspecified portion of its proceeds.

We are not privy to the agreements with Keurig and even Laughing Man Cafe owners -- but the reason why Hugh Jackman may continue to receive a share of the profits is the use of his name in its publicity programs?

The mission of the Entertainment Community Fund has always been to provide services and direct aid to those in need in the performing arts and entertainment industry, with the goals of both stability and resiliency in the population we serve.

The $160 Million ESSENTIAL Campaign is a bold and comprehensive effort which will allow the Fund to serve more people in more places. Dollars raised will be utilized by the Entertainment Community Fund for significant expansion of services, to create an Emergency Relief Reserve Fund and to address mission-critical capital projects.

What the ESSENTIAL Campaign will support:

Expand and Sustain Services: $75 million

Triple the number of people the Fund serves.

Execute an innovative digital engagement strategy that includes the roll-out of a new client portal funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Reach more people in additional communities with services such as scholarships, mental health services, insurance and career counseling.

Grow the Emergency Relief Reserve Fund: $22 Million

Sustain an Emergency Relief Reserve Fund that will allow the Fund to respond immediately to the next crisis that will impact the entertainment community, knowing the resources are there and more resources can be deployed.

Support Mission-Critical Capital Projects: $63 Million

Complete construction of The Hollywood Arts Collective, a complex in the heart of Hollywood that combines 151 units of affordable housing with an arts building and a new home for the Fund’s Western Region offices.

Upgrade the Actors Fund Home, an assisted living, skilled nursing and rehabilitation residence for seniors in New Jersey.

Modernize The Schermerhorn and The Dorothy Ross Friedman Residences in New York.

Create an Affordable Housing Catalyst Fund to stimulate investment in new projects.

HughJackman is the best choice because not only is he an actual entertainer,he is also a key player in the film&theatrical industries...&a fierce fundraiser for BroadwayCares (raised $10 M from worn T-shirts with DNA/ worn gloves with DNA/worn strawboater hat with DNA, photo ops)

I am reminded of A Steady Rain. HJ has such long legs

I was so glad that I got all front row for 3 shows and second row for one show which I saw with my nephew & wife.

At that time, Telecharge did not offer online ticketing service as they have it now -- you can't choose seats like now. They will display what was on offer and you either pick up the tickets or not.

What I did to get all front row was to talk to their Customer Service and get the seats I wanted. I remember the lady I dealt with - we would meander before she finally finds the seats for me - LOL!
