Perhaps a thread can be created for news on the publicity and promotion campaign for the movie PAN.

Warner Brothers have released the latest trailer for Pan, the newest incarnation of the Peter Pan story. It’s stars Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard and Levi Miller as Peter Pan. It’s director Joe Wright’s first film since Anna Karenina and will hit Irish screens on October 16th.

In celebration of this Warner Bros. Pictures Ireland have commissioned garden designers Liat & Oliver Schurmann of Mount Venus Nursery to present The PAN Garden at Bloom 2015 which takes place from the 28th of May until the first of June.

I wonder why he is doing the press/media junket for PAN now?

Does he expect to be busy ( maybe elsewhere) when late September/early October comes around?

Maybe filming in Australia?


Could it be that he was originally contracted to do promo and publicity at this time period, prior to the original release date in July...and he has attached himself earlier to other professional activities beyond the previous release period?

Or is WB planning an aggressive and extended period to promote the movie, with this phase only the first part of the publicity campaign?

No IMAX ?? This would have been wonderful on that screen format!


Could the postponement of the release date to October 9 may have caused it to loss its priority to IMAX screens, as there might already be commitments for other major films released around that time? Hopefully, that is not the case, and more because they have not firmed up new IMAX schedules yet?

At the Barcelona film trade show, Warner Bros made a major presentation of its forthcoming releases.

10-minutes of footage from Pan, Warner's October-releasing J.M. Barrie origins story, had an introduction from the pirate Blackbeard himself, Hugh Jackman. "It's a complete arranging that will take audiences beyond the story they know and love," he said of the film, adding that it had a Blackbeard "as you've never seen him before."

I wonder - is this part of the early PAN promo work that Hugh worked on when he stopped by LA on the way to Australia?

Btw, PAN is not an origins story by James Barrie ( if that is what THR meant) -- it is inspired by the James Barrie original play/book on Peter Pan.

Even more enchanting are the different myths as to how his musical instrument originated --

According to a myth, one day he came across a beautiful nymph called Syrinx. He tried to seduce her, but she managed to run away. Followed by the god, she sought refuge among her sisters, who transformed her into a reed. When the wind started blowing, a melody was produced. Pan, not knowing which reed Syrinx was transformed into, took seven or nine of them and joined them side by side in decreasing length, thus creating his musical instrument that bore the name of the nymph.

Hermes' son Pan, the goat-bodied nature god, didn't fare as well when he challenged Apollo to a musical contest. Pan had glued reeds together with wax, creating the instrument known as the panpipe. Apollo, in the meantime, had upgraded his lyre to one made of gems and ivory. The contest's judge, the mountain god Tmolus, listened very briefly before telling Pan to stop playing, as Apollo's instrument and skill were clearly superior. Warner Bros. has revealed plans for its Hall H appearance at this year’s Comic-Con: International San Diego, and they include Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Pan, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. The panel takes place on Saturday, July 11, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Director Zack Snyder and stars Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill will be present, representing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. They’ll be joined by fellow cast members Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter and Gal Gadot for a sneak peek at the movie.

I'm surprised about PAN (and Hugh) being at Comic Con this year. I went once when XMen ORIGINS: WOLVERINE was one of the panels. It was a complete zoo because the first TWILIGHT movie and cast were also presented. Those fans were nuts. They refused to give up seats for the other panels and the fan boys were angry. Parking was impossible. I'm glad I saw Hugh, but don't think I'll go again.

Fox will be presenting at 5:45 pm ( most likely for Apocalyse et al). Contents have not been officially announced.

I've never been, but if it's anything like DragonCon here in Atlanta, forget it! It's just gotten too big and too many people! At one of the ComicCons a few years back, one of our boardies was hit by a car and killed!

The blockbuster has a budget of $150million and will be released internationally in October.

11:23AM - Wright on the original JM Barrie book: it's a strange book, it's quite dark. "There's no real goodies or baddies." Even Pan is a bit weird, he sees, stabbing Hook in the back at the end. He loves the duplicity of all the characters.

11:20AM - Shown another clip of Blackbeard coming to the top of his ship to introduce his rules of the realm. Early clip when Pan first gets to see Blackbeard.

11:16AM - Jackman: The pirate ships were fullscale, fully built. Everything was incredible. But Joe had 3 weeks of rehearsals. All the pirates in a room, gave them a box of clothes, and let them dress up and do their own improv.

11:15AM - Garrett: "Every day was pretty magical" working on a set with so many practical pieces. They had 150-200 extras on set almost every day. Everyone was dancing and singing.

11:13AM - Shown another new trailer, looks as elegant and fantastical as we've already seen in previous trailers.

11:10AM - Hugh Jackman talking about how Joe Wright is a visionary and how they built a set in a hangar that was three times bigger than Hall H Huge sets.

Is this Joe Wright's first Comic-Con? The director takes the stage with Levi Miller, who is making his film debut as Peter Pan. Garrett Hedlund and Hugh Jackman also take the stage as Hook and Blackbeard. The clip they showed to bridge the introduction features the pirate ship against a bunch of WWII fighter planes in the sky over London, which is certainly not an image I would expect from the story.

Joe said, "My young son has been having nightmares, so I want to make this film as dark as I can to show them that no matter how dark a vision is, you can survive it and come through it intact" when he first pitched the film to Hedlund. Jackman went on to explain that everything in the film is as physical as possible, with sets built to the horizon if at all possible. At one point, they couldn't find Joe on the set for almost 15 minutes because of just how big the stage was and how intricate the set was. Jackman used the word "visionary" repeatedly.

The new footage is very pretty, which is no surprise based on Joe Wright directing, but I will admit that the more emphasis they place on "the prophecy" and turning Peter Pan into "the chosen one," the more uncomfortable I get. It's the same mistake they made in Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland," and it demonstrates a paucity of narrative imagination and a misunderstanding of the original text. I am very, very tired of "chosen one" narratives, and I don't understand why that is the only story studios seem to understand.

Having said that, I like the way the cast looks in the new trailer, and I'm excited to see Garrett Hedlund having fun on film. Jackman's going very big as Blackbeard, and Rooney Mara appears to actually be able to smile. Go figure.

They also screened the introduction of Blackbeard, which is about as big as I've ever seen Jackman go in anything. The scene is all about the way all the abducted children are brought to Neverland to serve as pirates for Blackbeard, and he lays out the rules for them. Seeing the way Jackman dug into the role makes it look like fun. Garrett Hedlund's Hook is also in the scene, silently watching what's happening, and the big tension of the film is watching how he goes from sympathetic friend to Peter to his greatest enemy by the end of the film.

Joe Wright talked about how odd Barrie's book is and how that's still his main source of inspiration for this film. He likes how the characters are drawn without any definitive sense of good or bad. Peter is a bit of a creep in the book, which is one of the things I've always loved about Barrie's writing.

Again... very quick. Just like that, "Pan" is done, and we're on to the next thing.

Drew, it seems, has not read the script ( he is surprised about the WorldWar 2 reference, obviously relating it only to the original Barrie novel...he is guessing that Hook turns into Peter's enemy in the end...he thinks the abducted children are going to turn into pirates...) plus he passes judgment, based on the trailer, on the quality of the narrative imagination ( I wonder if he knew that Jason Fuchs's script actually made it to the Black List in 2013?). Drew is fairly well-respected as a film blogger, but I hope he did his homework first, before making those conclusions. Unless, of course, he knew that the original script has been changed ?

Aisha asks Wright about why he chose to uses practical sets. He says, "I'm not sure it would've been less expensive to use CGI. The big set is the forest," he explained. "It helped me to understand where I was."

Jackman says the pirate ships featured in the film are "full scale. Fully built."

Wright introduces exclusive footage from Pan:

The ship falls out of the sky and lands in a massive sea before taking off again within floating giant water molecules and approaching a floating island. Peter asks, “Is this Canada?” The man on the ship insists the kids on board, “Kneel!” as he introduces Black Beard who addresses the children. “I have sprung you from life’s cruel dungeon,” Blackbeard yells atop his perch. He claims the kids are now, “home.” He insists they are in a land of opportunity and reads the rules of their new home. “Welcome to Neverland!” he yells before the clip ends.

Pan concludes.
