Based on the new movie Facebook Page recent entries, with a number of featured games for children, it looks like the marketing pitch is now focusing on this demographics. With its PG rating, and the focus on Peter Pan as a childhood hero, the pre-tweens and tweens are hopefully going in droves to see the movie...and again...and again

Standing in costume on a full-size pirate ship while hundreds of extras sing Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is a grand entrance Hugh Jackman will never forget.

The actor's opening scene as Blackbeard in his upcoming film Pan was one of his favourites both to watch and film.

It's the kind of scene you expect involved months of planning, but in reality it was an unscripted idea dreamt up during rehearsals for the film, Hollywood's latest reincarnation of JM Barrie's classic Peter Pan.

"I was pinching myself on the day, consciously - and this has happened about five times in my life - thinking to myself `do not forget this moment'," Jackman told AAP.

"That was a cool, cool moment."

Publicly, Peter Pan's arch nemesis Blackbeard is a show pony who revels in the costume, hair and body language of being on-show.

Jackman, as a self-described "big old ham", says he was quite at home playing the vibrant pirate.

"Neverland is a child's imagination so ... all the adults, yes (they're) frightening but also ridiculous because that's how kids see them," Jackman said.

But privately there's a sadness and loneliness that add another dimension to the character, who replaces Hook in the traditional bad guy role.

This version of the well-told story focuses on the burgeoning friendship between Peter Pan (Levi Miller), kidnapped from a London boys home by pirates, and Hook (Garret Hedlund), his adventurous Indiana Jones-eque rescuer and friend.

Jason Fuchs wrote the screenplay for Pan when he was 25 but it wasn't picked up - that was until it made the Hollywood Black List, a list of the year's best unproduced screenplays, in 2013.

"I don't think he had any fear whatsoever," Jackman said of now 29-year-old Fuchs.

"Jason really smartly wove in this idea of using Neverland and Pan, using the story we know and the characters we know and actually finding out how they became that."

The film does leave some very big questions about the relationship between Pan and Hook, but whether that's up to the audience to decide, or the creators in a sequel, is still to be decided.

Jackman says they've got some ideas.

"I don't think there's a Hollywood movie made north of $US20 million that there's not room for a sequel in," he said.

"Actually my kids are the most honest with me of anyone and they both said there should definitely be a sequel and there should definitely be a Blackbeard."
