I am already calling it that "Eddie the Eagle" is going to be the biggest surprise of the year. When I walked out of the screening for this film I was truly in shock. Taron Egerton really shows off just how good of an actor he can be and I have a feeling that this will give him a lot more acting credits. This is also one of Hugh Jackman's best performances. The cinematography is extremely beautiful. I was engaged the whole time and it was one helluva ride. I got emotional, I died of laughter, I clapped. I strongly recommend that you go see "Eddie the Eagle" when it comes out next month. This will definitely be in my top fifteen this year.

4.3/5 (Could go up to a 4.5 with time). I will write a full length review when I can gather all of my thoughts and when it is near it's release.

When you watch Eddie the Eagle, you take a journey of euphoria and poignancy. It's as bombastic, optimistic, and wholly lovable as a seven year-old kid performing Shakespeare with dedication, but probably unlike that kid, it nails what it tries to do. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the score is an eerily accurate 70's throwback that induces chills as frequently as novelty-based admiration. Taron Egerton is the endearing presence he's always been, and excels brilliantly here. Hugh Jackman is pitch-perfect, too.

The message present is one that would be heavy-handed anywhere else, but in this film fits the nostalgically carefree tone like a goddamn glove: Do your best. Every single second of the runtime is devoted to that statement, making… more

Feel-good Biopic

First of all, I have to say that I'm generally not a fan of biopics, they just aren't the type of movie I seek out. I got tickets to the sneak preview and my wife really wanted to go. Anyway, that preamble out of the way, I really did enjoy the movie.

Eddie the Eagle is a story about an underdog in every sense of the word. One theme that is repeated throughout the movie, is the quote from Pierre de Coubertin (father of the modern Olympics), "The important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part; the important thing in Life is not triumph, but the struggle; the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well." The story follows Eddie from the time he's a little kid with dreams of going to the Olympics. It follows him through his many assorted set-backs, and all the people around him who saw only failure in his future. It also shows the moments when he got helping hands when he most needed it. This movie is about his struggle.

The casting in the movie was quite good. I remember Eddie the Eagle from TV when I was young, and Taron Egerton does an excellent job in the role of Eddie. Hugh Jackman puts in a good performance as the coach Bronson Peary, and manages not to overpower Eddie's character. But while Taron Egerton really assumes the part of Eddie, a lot of Hugh Jackman leaks into his role as coach Peary.

The roles of Eddie's parents are also well played, and the actress playing his mother, Jo Hartley, gives a particularly poignant portrayal. The father, played by Keith Allen (currently uncredited on IMDb) is a bit of a caricature, but well acted. Actually, a lot of the supporting cast of characters are caricatures, especially the other ski-jumpers/coaches and the British Olympians/Olympic Committee. But to an extent that serves to emphasize the struggle for Eddie. Also, for those intent on seeing this film for Christopher Walked, he has a very small role.

While, I have emphasized the struggle aspect of the story, there is a lot of comedy thrown into the mix as well. The tone is upbeat throughout, even when Eddie has setbacks. While some of the failures are played for laughs (mostly early in the film), it's mostly Eddie's perseverance that makes this film endearing. It also feels like we're laughing with Eddie rather than at him, since it seems Eddie's in on the joke.

If you're on the fence about seeing this movie, I say give it a shot.

Not sure what this last guy means by "a lot of Hugh Jackman leaks into his role..." Since he's not playing a real person and instead is creating the character, wouldn't his essence naturally figure in the character's formation?

Why Eddie The Eagle Will Make Your Life Better

Let's be honest, everyone loves when real stories get an on-screen adaptation! Especially the ones in which "normal" expectations are challenged by someone with a lot of determination and a will that can not be broken. Michael 'Eddie' Edwards is an example of just that. A hero that is a slight bit awkward with a whole lot of charm. Mix that up with snow, skis, and some very thick glasses and you get an Olympic story that is captivating yet completely relatable. Other than the fact that the character himself will make your heart warm, it isn't the only reason why Eddie The Eagle will make you smile. Here are a couple takeaways that you'll leave with once you fly with Eddie.


HOPE

Remember Cool Runnings? You laughed, you probably cried and you were left with something you don't feel often -- hope. Eddie The Eagle will give you that exact feeling. Follow your gut and good things will happen; who knows maybe you'll be the next Olympic ski jumper.


80s Music Knowledge

Who doesn't like to hear some feel-good 80's tunes once in a while? The story is set on this decade so the music fits perfectly and transports you. Eddie was jumping on the screen, I was bouncing in my chair. Couldn't resist to this song.


A Rising Star And A New Role To Love

Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman. Who would have thought? What an amazing duo. We know Hugh Jackman can do anything and he shows it one more time on this film. If you're looking for a new role to love him in, this is definitely it. Taron was a surprise for me. I've seen him kick-ass in Kingsman, but seeing him bring some emotional depth and quirkiness to this role only has me excited to see him in the future.

Finally, this film will inspire you to pursue your dreams and who doesn't need a little encouragement once in a while? Wanna take over the world? Get over your insecurities. Perseverance is key!
