Reactions on BWW are fairly uniform -- *that the original film adaptation ( 1971) was almost perfect. *that it could be of no interest to the current generations *who would ever want to see it again? Isn't the refugee problem from the war-torn Middle East to Western Europe a major concern. What stories lie among these people fleeing from their homes? Certain parts of Asia also have boat people-refugee concerns. What are their stories like? Even in North America, there is the problem of illegal immigrants -- surely also with stories to tell? Always, someone sarcastically joked that "Hugh Jackman is in talks together with Bette Middler" Hmm... could be a real challenge -- a bedraggled Hugh (like Valjean), father of girls ( like Cosette) in a dark musical comedy ( he has done dark comedy)... In that video clip for Global Citizen, Hugh had graying almost full beard - he could look old, if necessary Hugh's ancestors include someone ( his great grandfather) who grew up under the Ottoman Empire, was Greek but lived in now-Turkey. Hugh and Barbra? Maybe? Twenty-year difference, but maybe Golde was an old maid when Tevye courted her? Sorry, I am making up stories - LOL! Who knows?? Michael de Luca used to be a very powerful producer ( together with Scott Rudin, were among the youngest-ever to hold that position) but is now MGM Chairman. As mentioned earlier, he was a major producer for REMINISCENCE. I don't think they will find it hard to find financing for this well-loved musical about Jewish life. Someone also suggested Mandy Patinkin - not sure if he can sell a big movie musical. Who else is there? Jo

Alfred Molina, a former Tevye on Broadway ( was that 2004?) is suggested by two contributors from TheatreMania, but say his voice is lacking. I say he does not have movie box office appeal! Hugh, they say, is physically not the same as the bulky Tevye… Hugh could continue eating bread that he bakes Jo

Hugh and Anne Hathaway will make excellent casting for Tevye and Golde!
Can do musicals, drama and comedy!
Excellent screen chemistry!

It seems that movie studios or streamer-sponsors are looking at movie adaptations of stage musicals.
Confirmed film adaptations include Spamalot/Matilda/MeanGirls, etc.
Why this rush...when this genre used to be considered a risky genre?
I think it is because of the success of musicals like MAMMA MIA! and the unexpected, runaway, tremendous success of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN which have fueled the decision of studios to look at the genre.
What is the likely most compelling reasons that tie up these 2 successful film musicals?
It is the musical score! The songs resonate with the general public in a tremendous way. In MAMMA MIA!, we are talking of popular hits of ABBA and which easily resonate with audiences, songs that they can sing! The setting of the Mediterranean made it also a picture-perfect musical.
THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, while introducing a new musical score, hit the right notes -- all the songs were resonant, singable, coupled with impressive choreography and the tremendous appeal of a great cast! Even the kids responded to the sounds of The Greatest Show and A Million Dreams. And This Is Me responded to a current social issue of giving a sector of society which needed social reassurance.
I have been thinking --
maybe Hugh Jackman can revisit THE BOY FROM OZ and look at the possibility of a filmed adaptation of THE BOY FROM OZ.
*the musical score includes many popular and beloved musical hits, even if they came from the recent past. *the story is based on real-life and includes such characters as Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli and Peter Allen *the storyline also addresses some current social issues such as acceptance *after his success in THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and LES MISERABLES and his recent music tour (TheManTheMusicTheShow) -- who can resist HUGH JACKMAN in another musical??

Why will men not attracted to musicals watch Hugh in a movie musical?
Maybe because they are curious to see how a man identified with such an opposite type of role ( Wolverine or even dramas like Prisoners) can be so successful in an a film musical?

From Deadline.com --
Oh, Jackman - what have you done?!!
They all think a movie musical lead is as easy as pie! And it is going to be an original musical?
Maybe a musical all about a rock star??

This is interesting -- First, I thought the first part of this 2-part film adaptation was going to have been released on Christmas 2022? Second, if the rumor is likewise true about another Superbowl trailer -- we will see another Broadway star in a first trailer of an upcoming movie - Hugh Jackman in the still to be titled Deadpool 3 movie. I wonder which will capture the hearts of the Superbowl audience Jo
