Interestingly, the announcement of the GUINNESS longevity record for the portrayal of superheroes spawned a few articles on the subject of superheroes and the actors who portrayed them. This Hollywood Reporter article sounds more like how the personifications of fictional characters from the comic books has impacted on how a true fan has come to view the character and his alter-ego/actor as practically non-separable!

Why a Superhero Actor Can Never Truly Move On

Robert Downey Jr., Hugh Jackman and Chris Evans influenced how comics writers portray their heroes, even as their characters gave seeped into their own real-life personas.

Earlier this week Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart were awarded with Guinness World Record certificates for holding the longest careers as live-action Marvel superheroes, as Wolverine and Professor X respectively. From X-Men (2000) to Logan (2017), the two actors held their roles for 16 years and 228 days, with Logan providing a powerful farewell to both of those characters as we’ve come to know them onscreen. In a video clip from This Morning, Jackman celebrates his record, delighted and emotional over an honor he’s dreamed about since childhood. It’s a touching moment that reminds us of how much these characters impact us and the actors who play them. While the nature of modern superhero movies permits that these roles are passed down, like Shakespearean characters or James Bond, that doesn’t prevent actors from being immortalized by these heroes and villains. As we prepare for Avengers: Endgame, and potentially get ready to say goodbye to another group of heroes and villains we’ve had the chance to watch grow over the years, it’s worth considering what these actors mean to us in these roles and the legacies they leave behind.

Almost every superhero and supervillain casting announcement is met with a barrage of opinions, both negative and positive upon release. This has been true since the day Michael Keaton was first announced to play Batman for Tim Burton, and it’ll surely be true when the next live-action Batman, the fifth since Keaton, is cast later this year. It’s funny that so often these casting choices that inspire so much controversy eventually come to instill so much confidence among audiences who will forever associate these actors with the role. And that’s especially true for those actors who get to wear their role like a title belt and spend years defending it, taking a few punches along the way, but still remaining a champ. Jackman, even if we were to consider X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) a blow, which we shouldn’t because his performance is great, certainly leaves the superhero movie arena as a champ.



I was 10 when Jackman was cast as Wolverine and I remember reading about it in the pages of Wizard magazine. I remember the concerns about the lanky 6’2 stage musical actor playing the gruff and 5’3 Wolverine. I remember reading that Dougray Scott had originally been cast and, lacking access to the internet, was unable to look up a picture of Scott to see if he looked more like the comic book character (he did actually, but that would become moot). Ultimately, at 10 these decisions mattered very little to me, and as someone who watched X-Men: The Animated series every Saturday morning, I was just excited that an X-Men movie was going to be made. When I finally saw X-Men in the summer of 2000, there was no doubt that Jackman was Wolverine. Admittedly, I probably would have been impressed with any guy with claws that came out of his knuckles and hair on his chest, but it was Jackman who made that character real for me. To see Jackman’s portrayal grow over the years, to tap further into comic book portrayal as I furthered my own comic book education, felt like chronicling a historically significant event.

There’d never been a time before where I’d actually been able to chart how a character’s film portrayal influenced the comics. I witnessed the comics, in quick succession, harness Jackman’s portrayal. In New X-Men (2001) Wolverine received a black leather costume, in Ultimate X-Men (2001) the character was made taller, younger and more classically handsome, and in Origin (2001) Logan’s backstory was revealed, along with his real name, James Howlett—a backstory and name that seemed perfectly fitting for an actor whose talents clearly went beyond being an action hero. Over the years, the comics and Jackman’s portrayal converged until the only notable thing separating the two Wolverines was the medium. Jackman has a filmography larger than one character, and he certainly won’t be at a loss having moved on from the character, but for many he’ll always be Wolverine, even after a new one is cast and we come to appreciate him too. And while we’ve seen some actors begrudge their most iconic roles over the years, there’s a sense that Jackman looks fondly on the legacy he’s built as a comic book character.



While no actor has established a legacy quite like Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart, who was entirely the character of Charles Xavier from the beginning, we’ve seen plenty of actors leave marks that, while not Guinness worthy, are certainly records. Like Jackman, the greatest testament to these records is how these actors change perceptions of the character and the medium they stem from. Robert Downey Jr., who has been Iron Man for almost 11 years, gave a performance in Jon Favreau’s 2008 film that forever changed how comic book writers approach Tony Stark, as well as popularizing a character many general audiences had no clue about. If you read an Iron Man comic before 2008, there is a striking difference in terms of how Tony is written. He’s more self-serious, at times broody, and occasionally stiff as though writers sometimes forgot there’s a man inside the suit. There’s a population of comic readers who got to grow up experiencing this comic book shift, just as I did with Wolverine. And similar to Jackman’s own rise, Iron Man allowed Downey to rise once more and reinvent himself as a movie star. Chris Evans, who’d already memorably portrayed the Human Torch in two Fantastic Four films in 2005 and 2007, was able to embody Captain America so well in 2011 that those concerned about him playing another superhero have largely forgotten there was one before Steve Rogers. Not only has Evans’ portrayal seeped into the comics, creating a Cap that’s more concerned citizen than grumpy old man, the role has seeped into his life as well, changing how he’s engaged with politics on social media. These comic book characters might be performances, but time and time again they have found a way to seep into reality and create a shared contextual experience.


I once saw someone compare recasting comic book characters to bringing in a new artist on a comic book. It’s an astute comparison, but I’d argue that these roles are more personal than that. It’s far easier to go through multiple artists than it is to go through multiple actors. There are still people who will forever see Christopher Reeve, Adam West, and Lynda Carter as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, often because they had a chance to grow with these characters and discover what all their worlds had to offer. This doesn’t mean, at least not often, that these people reject new actors in these roles, but it is difficult to separate these characters from actors, though we know they must both move on. While it’s so often the actors who get to spend lengthy amounts of times in these roles that hold the most emotional resonance for us, there are also those who held the title briefly or have only just begun that performance with such power that we immediately see the effect of their work across mediums. The late Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker is of course one of those, and it altered how every writer and actor has approached the character since. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman has also had a tremendous effect on how the character, particularly in her facial expressions, is handled with both a warrior’s spirit and a tremendous amount of empathy. There’s so much emphasis placed on whether these actors can fit into what’s on the page and be constrained by the panel, but the true beauty of superhero movies and the casting that comes with them is how these actors bring about change, grow with these roles, and allow us to grow with them.

Hugh Jackman played the mutant known as Wolverine from 2000 to 2017. He maintained the performance by looking the part when Wolverine was enraged to when he had funny or sentimental moments. It could be said that the movies focused on him more than they should, but that shouldn’t take away for what he did for the franchise. He played one of the most iconic characters in comic books and gave fans an abundance of great moments.


Even in lesser enjoyed movies like X-Men: The Last Stand, Logan had great moments. For example, when he helped fight off Magneto’s brotherhood in the final fight. He also had a ton of one-liners. When he told Iceman’s parents that he taught art. Since Hugh Jackman is done playing Loga, let’s take look back at his ten most memorable moments as the best there is at what he does.


10. Wolverine and the bear hunters: The Wolverine

Logan hates when people abuse animals. When a hunter used an illegal poison to kill a bear and didn’t bother to finish the job, Logan was furious. He tracked the hunter to a bar and gave him a piece of his mind. He started by stabbed the guy in the hand and then gave him a piece of his mind. The funny part was Logan asked the guy to ask him how he knew something. When the hunter asked him, Logan responded, “Funny you should ask…” A moment the perfectly represented Logan from the comics.


9. Prove it: X-Men

The rivalry between Logan and Scott Summers was established early. Logan had an infatuation for Jean and Scott knew it immediately. It also didn’t help the tension when Logan aggressively grabbed Scott before he even knew him.

Later, Mystique confused the X-Men by changing into Logan. After Wolverine took care of her, he saw Cyclops and Jean. Logan said it was him, to which Cyclops said, “Prove it.” Logan responded perfectly by saying, “You’re a d***.” Cyclops took a second and said, “ok” and they moved on. Maybe Logan’s funniest moment in the franchise.



8. Don’t try to steal Logan’s car: Logan

The beginning of Logan set the movie off perfectly. Not only did we get to see that 20th Century Fox wasn’t holding back by showing Logan brutally kill a bunch of guys who were trying to steal parts of his limo. Guys lost limbs and were stabbed to death. They also showed his age and how bad things had gotten.

One of Logan’s claws took a little while to fully pop, he was sleeping in a limo, and looked like a shell of himself. This got people into the movie immediately.



7. Wolverine wakes up in the past: Days of the Future Past

Logan wakes up naked, in bed with a woman, and shocked that the plan worked. Before he could put his clothes on and leave, he’s met by some goons. Apparently Logan was supposed to be protecting the woman in the bed and not having sex with her. Logan said that he didn’t sleep with her, but then said he did and did so multiple times, but that was the old him.

This made no sense to the goons. Oh, time travel. You make things funny and complicated. Logan warned them that this wouldn’t end the way they think, but they didn’t listen. Logan pops his bone claws and beats them all down with ease after getting shot.


6. Wolverine train scene: The Wolverine

Wolverine’s healing powers were gone (thanks, Viper), but Logan still had to protect Mariko. The henchmen trying to kill her boarded the train her and Wolverine were on. Thankfully, Logan got to them before she even noticed they were there.
The fight started inside the high-speed train and ended up on top of it. On top, Logan fought off one of the guys by tricking him into jumping into a fast approaching sign. The last guy was killed when Logan did a one-man fastball special and stabbed the guy and threw him off the moving train. One of the more creative fight scenes in any comic book movie.



5. Wolverine vs Lady Deathstrike: X2: X-Men United

Wolverine thought he was finally going to get his hands on William Stryker. Little did Wolverine know that Stryker was ready for him. Stryker had his new weapon attack him; Lady Deathstrike. While the movie didn’t get into the history between the two of them, it didn’t make the fight scene any less intense.

In fact, I’d go as far to say this was Logan’s biggest challenge. They brutally cut each other up, but Lady Deathstrike was getting the upper hand. She beat him bad. If not for the adamantium laying around (that he injected into her skull), Logan would have died in this fight.



4. Wolverine vs Mystique: X-Men

This may not have had the brutality of the fight between Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike, but it was more fluid and entertaining. Mystique used a variety of kick, flips, and tricks to keep Logan off balance. In the end, it was her ignorance that cost her the fight. When she tried to sneak up on him as Storm, Wolverine stabbed her before she could get the drop on him. She didn’t know Wolverine could tell who she was by scent. Knowing Mystique, she probably knew about Wolverine’s senses and still thought she could fool him. Or she was just enjoying herself.



3. I don’t think he’s joining: X-Men: First Class

Professor Xavier and Magneto were putting together a team of mutants from scratch. They already had the two of them and Mystique. They went on to recruit Angel (not Warren Worthington the 3rd), Darwin, Havok, and Banshee. Things seemed to be going great. Everyone said yes and it was on to their next target. They go to a low lit bar and approach a gentleman smoking a cigar.

The camera pans up and it’s Logan. Before Xavier and Magneto could get their pitch out, Logan tells them his thoughts in three words. “Go f*** yourself.” Everyone was talking about this scene months after the movie came out.



2. Wolverine vs Stryker’s team: X2: X-Men United

We’d already seen Logan fight a few times, but this was the first time we got to see Wolverine cut loose. This wasn’t just him going after guys trying to kill him. These soldiers were attacking his family and his home. Logan was not going to let that happen without a fight. Logan went from being in a rage to using calculated attacks, stealth, and skill.


Out of all the fight scenes, this one was easily the most memorable. We got to see Wolverine at his best. Killing any and everybody in his way. It was hilarious the way Bobby looked at Logan after he killed the first soldier. This was a near perfect scene.



1. The end of Logan: Logan

This was the end of an era. Hugh Jackman had played Wolverine for 17 years and it was time for him to go out with a bang. Logan died doing what he did best. Protecting people in need. If not for his intervention, Laura and the other children would have been killed or captured. In the end, he sacrificed himself so they could live.
Next: 100 greatest superhero stories

This was one of the saddest moments in a comic book movie. Maybe a movie period. We had to watch as Logan drew his last breath and the grip on his daughter’s hand loosened. Even after watching it a second and third time, the scene doesn’t get any easier to watch. Hugh Jackman’s Logan was an important part of comic book movies. Thankfully, he went out on top.

I'm certain Marvel will celebrate his achievements for his landmark work in the very near future. Big shoes to fill for certain.

Sounds like Rob knows about something that might come in the near future. I wonder if he is referring to the forthcoming inaugural episode of STORYBOARDS with Marvel Chief Creative Officer, RQuesada, which will be featured among the inaugural shows on November 12, when Disney+ inaugurates its streaming sevices? Buzz is already circling about who should be Hugh Jackman’s replacement as the most iconic X-Men – but can’t we just let sleeping dogs lie?

When Hugh Jackman hung up his claws as the X-Men’s Wolverine, it was only a matter of time before people started dream-casting future actors to take up the role – and with comic-book writer Mark Millar throwing Rocketman star Taron Egerton’s name out as a potential future candidate, it seems the race is on.


There’s just one problem. I like Taron Egerton a lot, and I’m sure he’d make a decent (deadly, adamantium) fist of it as Wolverine – but no. Just no. There’s only one Wolverine, and he’s a tall, Australian former journalist playing a short, Canadian kebabist.


Recast Superman? Sure. Get a new Batman? I’ll polish his cowl myself. Spider-Man reloaded? We’ll add him to the list.
But since 2000, and through multiple recasting of all those iconic heroes, Wolverine has only been Hugh Jackman. Through his performances, interactions with fans and physical commitment to the role Jackman has defined Wolverine as much as Wolverine defined him at an early stage in his career, forging a link between actor and character that’s almost unprecedented.

Sure, some roles can be recast over and over again – your James Bonds and so on – but it’s a much bigger assumption to think that every single role is like that. Just look at Alden Ehrenreich’s young Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story, a reinterpretation that struggled to get off the ground at least partially because to many, Harrison Ford IS Han Solo.

Like Ford did with Solo and Indiana Jones, Jackman originated a hugely popular, familiar pop culture figure with Wolverine – and given how beloved his portrayal was, it’s hard to imagine someone wanting to step into Jackman’s dance-ready size 11s anyway.

Over nine movies (if you ignore the archive cameo in Deadpool 2) Jackman took Wolverine everywhere he could go and then, in 2017’s Oscar-nominated Logan, took him to a perfect conclusion. Few superheroes get a perfect end, fewer still when it comes to movies, but Wolverine did. Can’t we now let sleeping Logans lie?

I know it’s inevitable that there will probably be another Wolverine at some point. He’s too big, too popular and too lucrative a character to just let be and, in beautifully ironic fashion, it seems certain that he’ll be painfully revived at some point in the future.

But when it does happen, the new Wolverine can only pale by comparison to the Huge Jacked-Man we all fell in love with in the original X-Men movies. Frankly, bub, it’d be utterly clawful.

Hugh Jackman has set a benchmark for Wolverine on the big screen. The Aussie actor has essayed the role of the X-Men character for 16 years. He hung his claws with Logan, which released in 2017. He did play a cameo in Deadpool 2. Although he kissed the character goodbye, fans have been begging the actor to reprise his role for another X-Men movie, now that the franchise is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). But, the actor has maintained that he is not returning to the role. However, off-late, the actor has been teasing Wolverine.

Jackman shared an unseen picture from the sets of his X-Men movie a few days ago. And today, he has shared another throwback picture from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The actor took to Instagram to share a picture of his bruised knuckles and revealed that it was during the making of the 2009 movie, he first bled in the franchise. Jackman blamed it on Ryan Reynolds. The Canadian actor was introduced into the X-Men universe as the Deadpool through the movie.

Jackman shared the picture with the caption, "The first time I played #wolverine... and actually bled. Clearly, it's (Reynolds') fault." Check out the picture below:

Since the actor did not mention the word "throwback," fans jumped to the conclusion that the two are teaming up for another X-Men movie. "Dont play with us like that, we still miss Mr Logan, you are the one and ONLY wolverine for us," read a comment. "Dont do that....Dont give us hope!!!!" added another fan. "Soooo u are wolverine again? In the next Deadpool? Is that what you are saying Hugh!!!" asked another fan.

Fans of Australian actor Hugh Jackman, 50, are well aware that the A-lister gives everything to the roles he takes, be it on screen or on stage.

And Hugh provided proof of this on Saturday when he took to Instagram to share a throwback photo of a hand injury he received on the set the Wolverine franchise.

In the picture, two distinct cuts several centimetres long can be seen on the knuckle on his left hand.

Hugh and Ryan have been comedic adversaries for a few years, with Ryan often gently taking the mickey out of Hugh on Twitter, and vice-versa.
Hugh recently ribbed Ryan him by inviting him to a party and falsely telling him it was a sweater bash.

‘These f***ing a******* said it was a sweater party,’ Ryan wrote on social media in a shot alongside his rival as well as fellow A-lister, Jake Gyllenhaal, 38.
