The film definitely deserves the attention with class performances by Jackman and Stewart. If Logan keeps appearing on major critic circle compilations, could we see a Best Picture nomination on the horizon. This is the first indicator that Logan may actually be a big player in the platform. 

Keep it up Fox, if you can do it with Deadpool, you can definitely do some good with Logan.

The film sites should also step it up for LOGAN, especially as this is perceived to be on dramatic par as other movies, history-based or indiehouse-type! Let's beat the drums very loud and clear!

Superhero movies have had a notoriously tough road to the awards stage, even as they've had a relatively easy ride at the box office over the last decade. Sure, Heath Ledger's posthumous Oscar for his performance in The Dark Knight is important, but superhero films don't really get a crack at awards beyond tech categories. In this shared universe era we live in, a superhero film hasn't yet been able to crack the category of Best Picture.

This year that might change, thanks to Logan.

Hugh Jackman's bittersweet curtain call as Wolverine, a film that genre lovers the world over have praised, was just named one of the 10 best films of the year by the National Board of Review. It shares that distinction with Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird -- two of the most talked-about films of the last few weeks -- as well as hits like Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk and Edgar Wright's Baby Driver. That's very illustrious company to be in. 

Now, does this mean that Logan is definitely in Oscar territory? No, sadly. For all of its clout, the National Board of Review does not dictate where The Academy goes with its choices, and Logan is still a superhero movie. It's very possible that we could arrive at the heart of awards season only to find a nomination for something like costumes for the film, which is fine. It's what we're used to. We may even get a token nomination for Jackman as Best Actor, but it's unlikely he'd win.

The more important thing is whether the film itself can land in the Best Picture category, which would put more eyeballs on it and cast even more light on the achievements of Jackman and director James Mangold. This distinction by the National Board of Review (which also gave a "Spotlight Award" to Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot) is the first step in that direction. Wonder Woman, by the way, is getting its own Oscar push.

There is such a great chemistry between these two actors who give us a view of their dedication and commitment to their craft.

Hugh sounds very respectful of a peer who has done so much work ( almost in the background) which speaks of the older actors's wide acting experience and background. A lot of people will be surprised that the A-1 list actor is willing to learn more about his craft from someone whose work has been extensive more as a featured role than leading a movie. Hugh is not just a naturally curious person but also someone who has enough intellectual curiousity to explore his craft even further by engaging with someone who has gone the same route, albeit in a more quiet but seasoned way.

I have a feeling that if Best Actor becomes a three-corner fight among those actors ( including in the Oscars), that Hugh might just come out ahead, because it is likely that Lewis and Oldman may cancel each other out (as they seem to appeal to the same demos).

Oscar watchers are a little confused, happily confused as to which Jackman portrayal/performance to root for ... or...

Directors of Oscar baits were asked which was the key scene in their movies which pulls the movie together, per a feature from the LA Times --


James Mangold offers his vision for LOGAN and how everything seemed to come together following a certain scene --

"It's Patrick Stewart's first scene in the film. He's in the dome and speaking with Hugh Jackman. It's a scene that was allowed to breathe – and we learned about character. We leaned into the character in this eight-minute, two-person scene. A lot of people ask me about the rating of the movie – why it had to be R – and I say there's a frankness and sexuality you can explore with an R rating, but another thing happens with an R: the movie is no longer under requirement to be sold to kids. That means you don't have to up-cut it so it feels like a commercial, and you can live with the characters a little more. Patrick and Hugh are phenomenal in it – it spelled out for me that we were on the right track and on the hunt for something interesting. The emotional fragility of their characters was provocative to watch, given the strength and power we'd seen from these characters in the past."

That was a long scene -- almost like those stunning monologues/soliloquys in major theatrical plays!
