Hugh Jackman's RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN -- scenes from Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, King and I, and Sound of Music! This would be like performing in repertory but a half hour for each set of musical scenes. Maybe the Opening scenes for Oklahoma!( Beautiful Mornin'/Surrey with the Fringe/People Will Say We're in Love), selected scenes for Carousel (the Park Bench Scene with If I Loved You, Soliloquy, and singing Cousin Nettie's You'll Never Walk Alone), maybe selected scenes from South Pacific ( Some Enchanted Evening with Nellie/singing Lt Cable's Younger than Springtime and Carefully Thought...or even Nellie's song I'm Gonna Wash that Gal Outta my Hair), selected scenes from King and I ( Is a Puzzlement/ Madame Thiang's Hello Young Lovers/ and Shall We Dance?), and selected scenes from Sound of Music ( Edelweiss, of course/ Mother Superior's Climb Every Mountain, and the title song Sound of Music). Overture selections from the five musicals! Tall order but since this is wishful thinking ... ;-)

And that is, if Hugh Jackman decides to change his mind against doing revivals in general!

*I suggested I'M GONNA WASH THAT GAL OUTTA MY HAIR -- so we can have a chance to see Wolverine's abs and pecs

If I recall right, didn't Paolo Szot ( as Emile de Becque) sort of ape what Nellie was doing in the Lincoln Center revival?


*I thought Hugh's take on IS A PUZZLEMENT would be an excellent example of his almost-declamatory style ( harking back on his classical drama training). Also, Hugh as King would show how versatile he can look


*I also suggested other songs not sung by the male lead because they are R&H classics and I would love to see and hear Hugh's take on them!


I just realized he will be singing practically the whole time - it would be like THE BOY FROM OZ...and BACK ON BROADWAY all over again -- sorry, Hugh! Maybe the overtures can come in between each musical ... and a choral group and a leading lady can help out

But I still want him doing I'M GONNA WASH THAT GAL OUTTA MY HAIR

How about a Rodgers & Hart show? Pal Joey? A Connecticut Yankee? Also, I've always thought that Hugh would be perfect in Adam Guettel's FLOYD COLLINS.
ALSO: SHENANDOAH!!!!!!!!! Seth Redesky even mentioned Hugh would be great as Charley Anderson in SHENANDOAH.

PAL JOEY, A CONNECTICUT YANKEE, ON YOUR TOES are probably the most well known. SONGS: "I Could Write a Book", Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", "Manhattan" "I Didn't know What Time it Was", "The Lady is a Tramp", "Thou's Swell" "With a Song in my Heart".

With Rodgers & Hart, you remember the songs. I'm not always sure what shows they're from. I do know that Ray Bolger became famous dancing a ballet to "Slaughter on 10th Ave." It was a comic ballet when Bolger didi it. Gene Kelly did a much different version in the film WORDS AND MUSIC.

"Slaughter on 10th Avenue" was indeed a comic ballet, originally from the 1936 Rodgers-Hart musical ON YOUR TOES, a satire on the unlikely mixing of Russian ballet and vaudeville. Ray Bolger was the "hoofer," Phil. In 1939 it was made into a movie starring Eddie Albert as the dancer afraid of being shot by the gruff boyfriend of the prima ballerina Phil loves.

By the way, great choices, Kathy. I saw the original SHENANDOAH starring John Cullum. I was able to go backstage because the stage manager was someone our little group had known from elementary and high school. It was a strong, stirring show, and Cullum was an ideal virile lead--as Hugh would be. If only.

Come to think of it --

While he says he generally prefers new material...

But as he did with BACK ON BROADWAY, he used existing hits ( some classics) for putting the show together. Maybe by doing another anthology of songs, but using his preferred theme to develop a show ( of song and dance), there is a chance we can see him sing hit songs and dance numbers while infusing his artistic take on how to put them together?

One could be songbooks by composers...but there are also many other interesting themes where a show can be built around.

That way, he is able to accommodate both his film and stage career, without the unfortunate long wait for new shows like HOUDINI, as well as a more manageable breakeven period. Song choices also guarantee familiarity by the audience.

On the other hand, wasn't the last report ( by Michael Riedel) on the latest material he participated in readings or simply read the new material were all straight plays? I suspect that while loves singing and dancing, when it comes to serious theatrical material, he seems to have some artistic preference for straight plays?

Like another poster, this reminded me immediately of THE PRESTIGE

This is a commentary on the current social fabric of American society-- but I do NOT really want to highlight that ( as I do NOT want to invite any divisiveness in perceptions and beliefs) but I thought it did highlight a strong point on how P.T.BARNUM is generally viewed as part of American culture.

On the other hand, a part of the American character is admiration for the hustler who makes his own reality. The gold standard was P.T. Barnum, the subject of “The Greatest Showman,” a movie musical in December, starring Hugh Jackman as the infamous hype man...

Will that be appreciated in a positive light in THE GREATEST SHOWMAN?
