Why should he not be disappointed? You may persuade yourselves that you're happy with the result, but I'm pissed - and I can imagine that Hugh wasn't pleased either. Of all the other nominees Franco had to win! I can't stand this smugly weirdo who is so full of himself. Have you forgotten how he dissed Hugh a couple of years ago? But apparently one has to be an a**hole - a "quirky" star - to be taken seriously as actor and true artist and to receive honor and awards.
Fine, if you prefer to sugarcoat it to be able to take the obvious disappointment, I'm certainly very pissed and disappointed how Hugh is once again snubbed this year. They even make fun of him like in this silly tweet. The awards season is over for him personally now since it's highly unlikely that he receives another nomination for a prestigious award anywhere - for me at least it is definitive over! And yes, I do believe he is at least a bit disappointed too. Only because it's not in his nature to admit it publicly and he predicted Franco's win, he may have hoped for a win though and can be very well privately disappointed now. This is only human. The GG for This is Me is nice, but it's only a cold comfort. The award isn't his award, the song isn't even his song! Overall it's quite disappointing and frustrating once again - the same procedure as usual - despite the current box office success and the #1 soundtrack. Before you begin to write a lengthy explanation, don't waste your breath, you won't convince me of the contrary. I stick to my point of view.

Luzie,
You can express your opinion as freely as you can...but you don't have to insult people on this forum. And don't dictate how everybody else should feel! Around here, everyone respects other people's opinions whether they coincide with one's views or not. And we observe civility and regard for others as best as we can! Who is supposed to be happy about what happened? No one is! Definitely, categorically, and decidedly so!
Why not find out the entertainment journalist (maybe German?) who is part of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who writes for German audiences and express your strong disagreement with their decision? Why vent your frustration on other people for not being vicious enough in expressing their disappointment?
But life goes on and Hugh's career moves on to the next project ... and we all hope that his brilliance will eventually be recognized!

Love for the movie, Hugh's passion project, has been expressed so solidly by how people have come to the cinema ( in many cases more than once) to support and cheer the movie -- www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?sortdate=2018-01-07&view=1day&p=.htm*These figures represent the latest daily box office receipts in the USA, January 7, 2018 as well as the accumulated receipts since release date. Look at how the awards contenders have gathered its following ( box office daily take and cumulative figures, including number of theatres and days of release). Three Billboards, Lady Bird, Shape of Water, Disaster Artist, I,Tonya, Phantom Thread actually are more of specialty cinema and appeal to a distinct but much smaller segment of movie audiences. Unfortunately, these are the movies the critics ( as well as the movie press and forecasters) generally favor and likely influence voters's preferences, too. *But there is room for movies that appeal to a much larger segment of the audiences - and SHOWMAN is one of these crowd pleasers. Yet it is one of the rare ones ( blockbusters or close to blockbuster-size) that won GGlobes nominations. What about Jumanji/Last Jedi/Pitch Perfect/ Thor/etc? Showman sticks out among the top box office producers for having been recognized that it has also contributed to filmmaking artistry.Jo

Btw, it seems The Post and Dunkirk went empty-handed, if I am not mistaken? They are the much-ballyhooed front runners! Even Get Out was getting so much love ( but more so because of the current social justice issues that are on people's minds) but also failed to get any trophies? We'll see how they will fare on the next awards battlefront - at the real combat zone, the Oscars! This Is Me already has a leg in, with its GGlobes win Jo

Jo Um, who again tries to convince others here again and again of one's opinion? I have neither insulted you nor anyone else. I have expressed my point of view here like you are doing it all the time. For instance, I can remember how pissed you were when Hugh "lost" against DDL and how you went on and on about it. You have tried to talk others here into believing that Hugh apparently didn't make TGS to receive any accolades - after you've realized that he would have no chance anyway. Now it looked like you were not exactly disappointed that he was ignored as usually and supposed he isn't disappointed either. Look, if you now prefer to deal with any disappointment rather differently by looking at the situation more relaxed (or pretending to be more relaxed), it's fine. Presumably it's even the better way. No offense, but you should stop trying to lecture others.

One last word, I had indeed rather seen if someone with a role in a social justice movie had won than someone like Franco.

Well, calling what some say as "sugarcoating" -- what do you call that?
You didn't follow what happened to the TGS project close enough to know what was up? If you did, you never joined in any of the discussions, did you?
*People know that James Mangold was asked in to help in the project reshoots and post production ( editing?). There must have been some real problems if another director is asked to be involved in finishing a movie. Also, have you noticed his name among those acknowledged on the album notes -- was he also involved in the musical score? We probably will not know how the initial cut was changed.
*It was an open secret among the movie press that Fox people have been spreading the word around that The Greatest Showman was not an awards-worthy project but that it will be focused as a crowd-friendly PG-rated family movie. If you read Hollywood Elsewhere by Jeffrey Wells ( I have referenced that), you would know how Wells, who was an early strong supporter of the project, reported on how disappointed he was to find out how bad the prospects of the movie were turning out mainly because of script problems. There was also mention that several test screenings over a prolonged period were being done which is not also considered a good sign ( there was even an insulting one which said they had to pay some people to attend the test screening)... You probably did not realize as well that Michael Arndt had dropped off the project. Arndt was the Oscar-winning screenwriter who was mentioned in many earlier reports as having written the final script- it would be interesting to know what happened there. Of course I realize that there are many things that can affect the success of a project ( especially a project as long-gestating as this one)...But sadly, it was even discussed on Wells's feedback section how someone from Fox was telling people that they had to do something drastic to save the movie.
*Fox sent out "For Your Consideration" ads (aka award campaign ad) and screeners and arranged many Q&A's for LOGAN! The only For Your Consideration ad sent out known in public was for THIS IS ME for The Greatest Showman. During the LA press presentation, the movie press were disappointed that no screening of the movie was given to them (except for the Golden Globes people) . Neither were screeners sent out after the premiere. They eventually showed it to the critics/movie press ( not to all) only a few days before the official release date. The review embargo was lifted midnight of the official release date -- which is generally interpreted as a very bad sign. Unfortunately, that is what happened - the slate of bad, bad reviews with one or two exceptions! Fortunately, movie audiences fell in love with the movie! And even the Golden Globes showered it with attention, with 3 nominations, much to the surprise of the Hollywood press! To tell the truth, I was hoping that Fox would change their mind after the GGlobes nods and after the box office turned around so well... and start heavily campaigning for THE GREATEST SHOWMAN as well.
*Have you read any of the forecasts from the movie press?? Much to our dismay, Greatest Showman was not getting much love. On Goldderby ( which is probably the largest group of forecasters voting together) it gave the movie little chance for an award ( something like odds of 100 to 1, if I recall right.
*I do know some behind the scenes stuff ... just because someone from the project consultants group got in touch with me through a theatre message board early on -- even before the February 2016 workshop ( I knew what happened in that workshop in full detail) --which of course I could not share in public and had some idea of what was going on.
On this forum, we voice our opinions and we try to persuade others to go along with our way of thinking with reasoned out arguments. That is not lecturing -- you go with it, you disagree with it, or you ignore it! That's it! No more, no less! We can even express our feelings strongly, but never by insulting others or looking down upon others's opnions! Maybe if you come in more often to exchange views here, then we can try to persuade each other to our side of the issue... but then of course...
You don't have to read my posts ...

Kaluuya was nominated presumably because of the anti Oscars-so-white issue...and, as quite a few have expressed, not because of his exceptional acting in GET OUT.

Hugh saw it as a true winner early on -- he introduced the song to the public (Nov/Dec 2015) even before the movie got its greenlight (presumably soon after the February 2016 reading)!

Unfortunately, Hugh's version was truncated in this fairly clear version of his interpretation of THIS IS ME -- This is the full version from Hugh ( fast-forward to 42'46" or thereabouts) but the audio is not as clear -- If the Golden Globes are here...can the Oscars be far behind?Do you remember that time when we first saw the videos ( the best one unfortunately came through PERISCOPE and is no longer available) and we were all excited? And how we tried to reconstruct the lyrics Jo

Jo, your reaction is exactly what I mean with "lecturing". Do you really believe you are the only one who follows closely his career and all his projects? Or the movie business in general? For your information only, even though I more than once entirely agree with you on some of your points, I usually do ignore most of your lenghty postings and only skim through them! Who do you believe has enough time and feels like reading all of your repetitive explanations from A to Z? Why do you believe that only a few members still even comment on anything? Certainly not because they aren't interested and informed enough, but rather because they feel discouraged to express their point of view, because they don't want to be lectured by you in a patronizing, "all-knowing" way. But don't worry, I will stop bothering you now.

Who's lecturing? This forum is about discussing the career of Hugh Jackman. Here's hoping the personal attacks are a thing of the past.

Just a word, what bitterness Jo...I'm reading comments full of anger everywhere, even a person who appreciates James Franco wrote (on Youtube) that Hugh was the one who deserved to win because he has more skills as an actor. People now are clearly perceiving that something is wrong, many are wondering if this continuous snubbing every his effort is not casual but wanted for some reason that no one is able to explain. Some time ago, before Hugh was nominated for the Golden Globes, I had commented the Greatest Showman would be seriously considered as a candidate for awards if instead of a musical made for the big screen it was a Broadway musical, because it's something more suitable for the Tony Awards, since film critics still to consider this genre as something outdated today, despite the success of La La Land which was less "old fashion" than Greatest Showman so, I'm not surprised but just very sad for him about how things went last night. Logan would have been the winning horse to bet on, candidabile in the Drama category, but I can bet Gary Oldman would have won in any case. Everyone now noticed something that Hugh's fans have been saying for years, it's true, he's snubbed and underestimated.

Even early on in his career, Hugh had noted, to his frustration, that actors who did musical theater were adjudged as something less than “real” actors. To some extent, that perception seems to persist despite the very occasional breakthrough of a Moulin Rouge, Chicago or La La Land. By the late ‘60s, the movie musical had lost much of its popularity in favor of grittier fare, which was accorded more respect. I truly believe that deeply seated prejudice worked against Hugh at the GG, along with a Hollywood tradition of affection for movies about filmmakers and their films.
By the way, if the nominations had been expanded in number, I’ll bet Hugh would have been recognized in the drama category for Logan. Many critics thought he absolutely deserved a nomination for that stunning performance. I’ll second that.
Maybe The Frontrunner will afford him another opportunity.

Nina, Always, Hugh is a such a favorite because he is not just a fine actor and engaging performer ( and a real nice person, especially for those who have met him at stagedoors)...but it is not always that people will be recognized for their excellent work. Sometimes it is because other particular portrayals seem to strike a stronger chord or that a particular issue is at the moment getting more attention. In Hugh's case, what we have been gifted with is not just the depth of his talent but the versatility he has shown in different mediums ( film and stage) and in different genres. Some are comparing him to the case of Leonardo DiCaprio who was continuously ignored for an Oscar win even after several nominations. It was only when Leo won for The Revenant that his acting ability was finally recognized ( and we have seen him even as a young boy gracing the screen and earning recognition for his acting). Leo felt a little bitter before that and even famously commented that some get their acting honors by changing body shapes or with heavy prosthetics...Also, the AMPAS has been criticized because they were accused of playing favorites - maybe so or maybe because since their profile a few years ago was supposedly "male, white, and over 60 years old", their taste seems to congregate around a certain type of acting from a certain era. It is also speculated that Hugh's strong identification with his superhero role may have been one reason why his work in other films have been largely ignored ( until Les Miserables) because the genre is not an AMPAS favorite. Even among Hugh fans, many were disappointed ( mostly on social media or blogs or message boards) that it was not in LOGAN that he was recognized ( especially so that the film won both the critics and the audiences) but in the musical THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. Some had even blamed FOX that the lack of attention to LOGAN was due to the scheduling of the release of the movie ( March 2017) which was not the awards-bait. Ironically, a movie that was released only a week ahead of LOGAN was GET OUT which is getting a lot of awards attention for the movie and for its lead ( Daniel Kaluuya, who was actually being predicted as James Franco's strongest competitor for the GGlobes win... Hugh was only mentioned in one site as a possible UPSET winner). Sad, but that has been the running commentary of the day with movie people and the press. All I am saying is that eventually recognition will come for Hugh...and it may be just a matter of time. It could be as early or as unexpected as the next time around. One or two comments already being said was that Jason Reitman's THE FRONT RUNNER may have strong promise ( given not just Hugh's ability but also Jason Reitman's reputation as a twice-Oscar-nominated helmer). One last note -- where I have been so disappointed is how many of oldtimer theatre posters on ATC and BWW have not shown any support for Hugh and The Greatest Showman. The dissing the movie gets there is unexplainable. One even suggested that Hugh should already stop with his song-and-dance routine I share these views as food for discussion ... if people do not agree, I will never have any issues with any opposite views. I may continue the discussions because I have always thought this is such a forum, a kaffee klatch. Btw, as soon as the Franco win was announced, I actually stopped watching the show ( although I kept the TV on) and turned to something else. It felt like my enthusiasm collapsing like a balloon which was struck by a sharp object. And had I been accused of blind loyalty to Hugh Jackman -- I would have readily and meekly said " A 101% YES!" Ellen - LOL - I swear I have not read your post before I wrote my previous one to this But you're absolutely right -- there is still a lingering dislike for movie musicals, which is sad. Even at the Golden Globes -- when Emma Stone said that "the ability to make people laugh is as important as being able to make people appreciate drama" ( or words to that effect) it struck me that her prepared speech seemed to have ignored the words " ability to entertain" to refer to THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, as musicals are not necessarily comedies such as Les Miserables. I had even thought, maybe uncharitably, that the HFPA is now trying to gain acceptance as a more serious awards body. The Golden Globes has been the laughing stock for many film buffs for sometime now because of some of its previous awards, especially to someone named Pia Zadora(?) and also because of its reputation of being close to Harvey Weinstein then... Maybe they have done that partly because the winners are mostly from specialty cinema ( formerly called the indies) with Three Billboards, Lady Bird, Shape of Water, Disaster Artist, etc). They have even ignored the likes of The Post, Dunkirk, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and famous auteur-directors...Incredible that a very young actress could win over the most venerated actress of all time! I also felt that to some extent they may already stolen the thunder from the Oscars because of their involvement with current social justice issues and the profile of their winners. However, what is heartening is that people seemed to have fully re-embraced the genre when they "fell in love" with THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. Audiences's defiance of the critic ratings (especially hailed in the fabulous score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.0 of 10.0 from IMDB Users) also gave way to comments like "Greatest Showman is the new Sound of Music" and " Greatest Showman could be the next Titanic" ( the latter one is with reference to audiences coming back for repeat patronage over and over). I have always hoped that Hugh would be able to read or his attention drawn to them -- as that is maybe the full measure of the success of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, not just the conferring of honors by the less than 100 journalists who comprise The Hollywood Foreign Press Association which hands out the Golden Globes). Hope the audience love affair with The SHOWMAN ( the movie and the actor) continues! Jo

I don't know anyone on this board personally and will most likely never meet any of you, but I want to reiterate what I probably said when I first joined the forum in 2014. We are a community with a shared interest. It is a community that doesn't exist in my personal life and I am grateful that here I can join with others to root for, hope for, and show appreciation for Hugh as an actor, entertainer, philanthropist, charmer, family man, etc. ( maybe the etc. has to do with his face and body - lol). So, thanks to all.

Thanks, hughmanity -- they are one of the nuclei in the bigger family of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN cast and creatives There is another Aussie in the movie production team -- the choreographer Ashley Wallen, who was with Michael Gracey when the first Lipton Tea commercial was filmed... and has remarked that it was a sort of template for some of the work they did in THE GREATEST SHOWMAN. Too bad they do not have a special category for that in the Below-the-Lines for the Oscars. Jo

Found the photo of Hugh and Deb with Stacey Snider and Emma Watts ( FOX Chairman/CEO and Vice-Chairman) -- Fox also won under its FOX Searchlight Banner. Five wins for Fox Searchlight, especially THREE BILLBOARDS and SHAPE OF WATER.
