Presumably, direct competition will be with other award-baits (Look out for releases from FOX SEARCHLIGHT and FOCUS FEATURES mainly).
Re wide releases, it can represent an attractive counter-programming option. In addition, it could meet with more favorable reaction from the tentpole crowd if it proves to be more than just " drama" but " a political comedy", as described by co-writer and director Jason Reitman.
The reaction of the critics and the movie press could be very important...and some early word from Toronto ( if it premieres in that September festival, where audiences vote for favorite film and no formal awards are given by a jury). It if also receives favorable reactions in Telluride ( I suspect this could be the most likely premiere host, given that it is in Colorado, the state represented by the former Senator Hart), then the buzz and narrative can start growing till the release in November.
There are 3 important fall festivals - other than Toronto and Telluride, there will be the Venice Film Festival ( which combines film buzz and glitz/glamour! All will be held in September, if I remember right.

If the movie turns out to be an outstanding one with excellent performances, the timing of the release to coincide with real-life elections attention, this could be quite a well-received film, artistically and commercially! |

Maybe both Telluride and Toronto?
And a long shot, also Venice, so it can become a film worthy of international attention?
Btw, Jason Reitman is Canadian/American, so a Toronto exposure could be very welcome, too.
