Saw this Norton episode last night on BBC America. But Norton is always edited to make room for commercials. Bleh! Cute “Maria” story by Hugh. I’m glad the full episode is available online.

Hugh is game for anything, including singing snatches of a song in my native Filipino/Tagalog language ( he is interviewed by a local media correspondent) -- Please click on the name of the uploader to get the video to play --What did he sing -- "Here am I.. Falling for you " PS: It sounds like he sang more than two lines because the correspondent said it was an "excerpt". I wonder if I have to pay attention to the local TV station for which she hosts to get that fuller version. Jo

This is a reprint about a review from the XINHUA news agency ( largest in China) which was quoted under another media outlet ( Official Reviews - TGS) ; But it seems it is really intended to heighten interest when it opens in China on February 1. www.globaltimes.cn/content/1084970.shtml

Too bad this particular clip did not show the audience reception when Hugh entered the room. It was very, very enthusiastic!

Sorry, but calling it "cheesy, but with a heart" is the not the right description for this movie. Maybe some people think it is not "cool" (as Owen Gleiberman wrote in Variety) but what makes people happy and joyous does not deserve to be faulted. Why can't intellectually-stimulating ( such as how he worked out what would work best given the culture at that time...and how marketing was developed centuries ago) be at the same time totally crowd-pleasing and resonant? If at all, there are many instances where the fast-paced plot would indicate cultural developments and changes as well as a comment on the social milieu then...and together with the smart dialog ( my favorite one is when he says " deep in the China sea" that were likely missed...and some sense of humor (" Marie Antoniette with a sore throat" while exhibiting how a guillotine works in the museum). And the serious messages that resonate with a lot of people could not be missed. What is cheesy about that when we are seeing a mirror of history and current events And that is not including the music itself -- I wonder if he examined the lyrics deeply because part of the story development were contained in those lyrics themselves! I missed this one -- a Filipino media reporter interviews Keala and Michael G. towards the end -- it is like a tribute to the Showman actor himself But this movie must have done so much for them both, Keala -- for getting to believe in herself fully and be very proud of it! Michael -- how many newbie directors of a movie musical can boast of a similar reaction to one's maiden filmmaking effort?
