Why do you think the movie met such an unexpected success everywhere ( except with critics   )?

Nothing to do with the factors which brought on the unexpected success of THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, but FOX Chairman and CEO Stacey Snider gives a speech at CineEurope which pitches for movies with blockbuster potential which are not about " caped crusaders". The example she gives is THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, as she talks to theater distributors about welcoming different entertainment fares if one does not want weekend audiences only.

“The studios need to have a bigger appetite for big cinematic, tentpole-type entertainment that isn’t necessarily based on branded material,” Snider said at European film exhibitors’ conference CineEurope in Barcelona, Spain. “When you think about ‘The Greatest Showman’…what we had to hang onto was that the music was incredible and that, if ever there was a person to be ‘The Greatest Showman’ at Christmastime, it was Hugh Jackman.
