TV’s streaming wars are expanding to non-traditional fronts.

WarnerMedia and YouTube TV have struck a distribution deal that will expand the Google-owned video hub’s carriage rights to include HBO and Cinemax for the first time as well as a commitment that WarnerMedia’s new HBO Max streaming service will be made available on YouTube TV upon its launch in spring.

The deal also means WarnerMedia’s more traditional cable networks – TBS, TNT, truTV, CNN, HLN, Turner Classic Movies, Adult Swim and Cartoon Network – will continue to be available on the service, which has offered them since 2018.

“As consumers’ media consumption habits continually evolve and the landscape becomes more and more dynamic, our goal remains constant, and that is to make the portfolio of WarnerMedia networks available as widely as possible,” said Rich Warren, president of WarnerMedia Distribution, in a prepared statement. “YouTube has been a valued partner for a number of years, and we’re pleased to not only extend our existing agreement, but also make HBO and Cinemax – and soon HBO Max – available to YouTube TV customers for the first time.”

Hugh Jackman stars as the superintendent who, along with a few other public school administrators, was found to be embezzling millions in taxpayer dollars after a student journalist uncovered the fraud. Our own A.A. Dowd caught the film at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, hailing it as “proof that you can find a human story even in a subject as dry as an investigation into financial fraud.”

He stars alongside Allison Janney and Ray Romano as they work to raise their Long Island school district to the nation’s top spot, spurring record college and admissions and soaring property values. But when an embezzlement scheme surfaces that threatens to destroy all they’ve built, Frank is forced to maintain order and secrecy — by whatever means necessary.

“I wanted to make a difference. I got us all the way to number four, and I will get us to number one,” Jackman says in the trailer. “Get us to first, that’s all that matters,” Janney replies.

At last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, HBO scooped up Cory Finley’s buzzed-about dark comedy “Bad Education” for just shy of a cool $20 million. That’s great news for the ripped-from-the-headlines film, which earned star Hugh Jackman raves for his turn as an embezzling high-school superintendent, and its potential to reach a massive global audience. But that also means, without a theatrical release, there will be no Academy Awards for this film. “Bad Education” will instead vie for Primetime Emmys, as its April 25 street date on HBO platforms makes it eligible for this year’s awards.

With a cast led by Jackman, plus TV mainstays Allison Janney (both an Emmy and Oscar winner) and Ray Romano (also an Emmy winner), it’s an enviable ensemble, all directed by Finley, who last helmed the hit indie dark comedy “Thoroughbreds.” Jackman plays Dr. Frank Tassone, the superintendent of the Roslyn School District in Long Island, who, after inheriting an administrative mess, ends up steering the largest single public school embezzlement scandal in history. That scandal is inspired by real-life events observed by co-producer/writer Mike Makowsky during his time as a student at Roslyn. The film’s producers also include Fred Berger (“La La Land”), Oren Moverman (“Time Out of Mind”), Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (“Honey Boy”), Julia Lebedev (“Dear White People”), and Eddie Vaisman (“Monsters and Men”).


Hugh Jackman’s against-type turn as a disgraced school administrator earned raves out of TIFF, with IndieWire’s David Ehrlich heralding “the most human performance he’s ever given, wrapped in translucent vanity and cut with finely sliced layers of doubt and denial.” He also wrote, “Heavy with poisoned humor and as panoramic as Finley’s ‘Thoroughbreds’ was laser-focused, ‘Bad Education’ is in no hurry to reveal the full picture; watching the first hour of the movie, it’s hard to imagine how this seemingly benign story of suburban malfeasance could possibly explode into the biggest embezzlement scandal in the history of the American school system. But the pieces are there from the moment the film starts, buried just under the sand.”

He's saying that having the movie released thru HBO ( with its global reach) will allow reaching a global audience than if the movie is given a theatrical release for indie-type movies. It also gives it excellent chances at the EMMYs. Hmmm... that is a good point there. It is also possible that had the movie been given a theatrical release and Hugh gets a nod, he would have faced very stiff competition particularly from Hollywood favorite Joaquin Phoenix for JOKER! Food for thought

HBO has released a teaser for Cory Finley‘s Bad Education, which stars Hugh Jackman as a crooked Long Island superintendent whose shady dealings are discovered by a student reporter.

In what some are calling the best performance of his career, Jackman plays Frank Tassone, a Long Island school superintendent who has brought great honor to the Roslyn School District with the help of his trusted assistant superintendent Pam Gluckin (Allison Janney). He’s beloved by students, parents and teachers alike. But when a plucky student reporter (Geraldine Viswanathan) decides to dig deep into some expense reports, she begins to uncover an embezzlement scheme of epic proportions, prompting Frank to devise an elaborate cover-up — by any means necessary.

The film is based on a true story that served as the basis for a 2004 New York magazine article by Robert Kolker, who went on to write Lost Girls, which debuts on Netflix next month.


I was initially surprised when HBO dropped $20 million for worldwide rights to Bad Education at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, but it was a sign of the times. This is premium content, and if HBO didn’t pull the trigger, they knew that one of a growing number of their competitors would. Jackman is an A-list star and this is one hell of a story.

I was a fan of Finley’s 2018 debut Thoroughbreds, but I didn’t totally love it. It felt very much like a play, which I mean as both a compliment and a criticism in equal measure, but again, it was his first film. I think he has a better story to work with this time around courtesy of screenwriter Mike Makowsky, who was actually a Roslyn middle school student when this scandal broke.

Bad Education co-stars Ray Romano (The Irishman), Alex Wolff (Hereditary) and Annaleigh Ashford (Impeachment: American Crime Story), and will hit HBO on April 25. I’m looking forward to this one, because if HBO is spending $20 million on a Toronto title, I’m willing to bet it’s pretty good. While Hugh Jackman’s legacy will forever be tied to playing Wolverine in the X-Men franchise, every now and then he finds a meaty role that serves as a reminder that he’s also a tremendously skilled dramatic actor with plenty of colors that have gone underutilized for far too long. That’s the case with Bad Education, the second feature from Thoroughbreds writer/director Cory Finley in which Jackman plays a public school superintendent who becomes involved in a massive embezzlement scandal. Based on a true story, Bad Education serves as a pretty searing indictment of greed and privilege, and although the themes don’t entirely coalesce by the end, Finley crafts a consistently compelling and often humorous tale anchored by Jackman’s impressively nuanced performance.

Jackman plays Frank Tassone, a meticulous, sharply dressed Long Island school superintendent who is as attentive to his personal care as he is to his students’ progress. And make no mistake, the film dials in on how Tassone genuinely cares for his students and the stature of the school (ranked #4 when the movie begins, which serves as an impetus to get it to #1). But he’s also overworked and underpaid, and as evidenced by a fairly unbearable meeting with an entitled parent early on in the film, underappreciated. So is Pam Gluckin (Allison Janney, tremendous as always), the school’s assistant superintendent for business and the person responsible for keeping the books on the school’s expenses. Also the person responsible for handling the school credit card…

The internal exposure of certain misdeeds is only the beginning of the story for Bad Education, as Jackman argues successfully to the school board that by going to the authorities, they would put the entire school and community at risk—including housing values. But what he didn’t count on was that by encouraging a young student working for the school newspaper (Geraldine Viswanathan) to push further for her puff piece about a new skybridge to be built at the school, a serious piece of investigating reporting has begun. And boy are there a lot of skeletons in the closets of Roslyn School District.

There are strong Election vibes throughout Bad Education, and it’s a film that is often very funny. Finley hones in on the unglamorous life of a public school administrator by favoring unforgiving fluorescent lighting and spending a good deal of the first act simply showcasing the grinding day-to-day lives of Frank and Pam. It’s in dialing in on how the characters slipped into outright embezzlement where the film falls a bit short, as much of the runtime is more of a cat-and-mouse game with the guilty parties trying not to get caught. Obviously parallels to Wall Street’s financial crimes (and lack of consequences) are present, and clear lines are drawn to a certain other administration that skirted the law by wrapping themselves in lies, threats, and collusion. But as the movie winds down, it doesn’t quite stick the thematic landing, opting instead to cast a bit of a wider net.


But when Bad Education works, it works well. Jackman turns in one of his most compelling performances in recent memory, and the skill with which he masks Frank’s simmering indignity and frustration is downright masterful. This is a truly layered performance, but one in which the layers don’t peel off and devolve into screaming matches or tear-filled breakdowns. Instead, shades of Frank’s true nature are glimpsed only in brief flashes played with expert subtlety by Jackman. Janney similarly is terrific here (but honestly when is she not?), as Pam puts on the face of the woman who holds the school together while enjoying her private life of wealth a bit too publicly. You can pretty much bet that when you cast Allison Janney in your movie she’ll become something of an MVP, and that’s definitely true of her work here.

There’s a lot to like in Bad Education, especially in the performances and how it gives Jackman a chance to show a different side of himself. It doesn’t entirely come together as a satisfying whole—it’s a tad long and the thematic ideals don’t completely coalesce—but Finley is able to craft a handsomely-made, compelling, character-driven feature out of this pretty crazy true story.

Saw this during TIFF last year, one of my favourite films in the festival. It's unfortunate that this won't see a proper theatrical release, but an original film with a small stake story like this is a risky bet at the box office (a sad state of affairs) so I understand why the filmmakers and producers went with HBO.

It is a very entertaining film and performances are first rate across the board. Jackman in is splendid -- it's a role tailored to his strength/his particular brand of charisma, a very interesting blend of showmanship, earnestness and deviousness. Fun fact: it's based on a true story and the screenwriter for the film actually went to the high school where this scandal broke out.

HBO has unveiled a teaser trailer for the film Bad Education, which received rave reviews out of the Toronto Film Festival last fall. The film is a fictionalized version of the true story of the single largest public school embezzlement scandal in history - about schools on Long Island. You can read more about it in this NY Magazine article. Hugh Jackman stars as Frank Tassone, the superintendent caught up in an embezzling scheme involving him and a few of his employees. The cast includes Allison Janney, Ray Romano, Geraldine Viswanathan, Kathrine Narducci, and Alex Wolff. This looks extremely good, oh damn I can't wait to see it. Everyone was talking about this at TIFF last year, and it certainly seems worthy of all that buzz, at least from this first look teaser.

Just an observation --

April is not exactly/usually an exciting month for film releases. Also, except for any outstanding film finds at Sundance ad the Berlinale, it id likely that awards-conversations would have died down...

If Bad Education turns out to be a winner for HBO audiences -- it could be one of the most talked-about movie releases for the month. That augurs well not only for the expected streaming service release ( HBO-MAX, to be inaugurated in May), maybe for EMMY awards purposes... and if it is released on video ( BluRay/DVD), could also be a top seller.

I remember some of the reviews from TIFF commenting on how Hugh "deglamorized" for the role and didn't let vanity interfere with  unflattering close-up shots meant to approximate a much less attractive man.  I recall noticing how they shaved Hugh's excellent eyebrows to make them resemble those of Tassone's and worrying needlessly that they wouldnt't grow back!
