The Hollywood Reporter looks ahead to the busy pipeline of productions opening from January through summer, on Broadway and off.

Unlike the movie calendar, which floods the market with prestige releases for awards consideration toward the end of every year, the New York theater season begins and ends midyear, pegged to the Tony Awards in June, meaning a whole slate of major shows is still to come.

Stars heading back to the stage include Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Isabelle Huppert, Glenda Jackson, Ruth Wilson, Laurie Metcalf, Annette Bening, Faye Dunaway, Adam Driver and Keri Russell, while the screen-to-stage conduit continues with new musicals based on Tootsie, Beetlejuice and Moulin Rouge!

The 2018-19 theater season has already been established as a corrective to last season's dearth of strong new plays on Broadway...

Finally, in a category of his own, Broadway favorite Hugh Jackman will play three shows at Madison Square Garden (June 28-29) midway through his international arena tour, The Man. The Music. The Show. Covering numbers from his stage hit The Boy from Oz, as well as screen successes Les Miserables and The Greatest Showman, the song-and-dance spectacle wraps up July 19-20 at the Hollywood Bowl.

Hope the singing-along is confined to songs from THE GREATEST SHOWMAN and not for the entire show

It is still going to be Broadway-like performance-watching show! Not a pop concert

Did he say he will be performing songs from another Broadway musical which he will be involved ("almost certainly") in and previewing ("Coming soon!!") ??!!

There have been so many suggestions for the show to be filmed --

*Many asked for it because they will be unable to see the show(s)

*Those who have a chance to see the performance want to relive it

*The show is actually being filmed as it goes on, for purposes of projecting the images and the sound on the big screen - will it take so much more effort, apart from editing, to be able to release it on home video?



There is also a suggestion to include a documentary-like special feature showing Hugh ( and the cast and musicians) rehearsing on the development of the show... plus Hugh's own preparation way ahead of the show(s). That would be a very welcome addition.

I would also suggest that selected special clips from different shows, where he might have different guests sharing the stage with him, be included. I would particularly like to see something with original cast members from Oklhahoma! ( Hugh did say that he is already in touch with Maureen Lipmann), as a great recollection as to where it all started for Hugh Jackman, international stage star!

"In the make-up trailer having his hair styled into Wolverine points, Hugh Jackman winces as he puts his foot in a bucket of ice. ''That's what happens when you do action movies when you're too old,'' he told S's Shelly Horton. ''Icing body parts becomes part of your life.''

When he was doing THE BOY FROM OZ, he suffered stress fracture in one foot closer to the end of the run. He was icing his foot before and after each performance.


Hope this does not happen during his 44-date Music Tour!

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN has topped Avengers Infinity War, Star Wars The Last Jedi and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again with a new UK record.

It’s never enough for Hugh Jackman’s The Greatest Showman, as it breaks yet another record.

According to the British Association for Screen Entertainment, the movie musical has become the largest digital release to date, selling in excess of 770,000 digital copies since its home release in April.

Meanwhile, The Greatest Showman is the best-selling film on a home-based platform of 2018, selling in excess of 2.68 million copies in terms of combined physical and digital formats.

Seventy-two per cent of those sales were on physical formats such as Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra HD.


This impressive figure is more than double second-place Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’s 1.3 million.

Meanwhile, billion-dollar box office goliaths Avengers Infinity War and Star Wars The Last Jedi lag behind on 1.23 million and 1.16 million respectively.


Since its April home release, The Greatest Showman has yet to drop lower than fifth place in its 36 weeks on the combined Official Film Chart.

No doubt such fan enthusiasm for the movie musical, that only received mixed reviews from the critics, has contributed to the UK video category growing by 10% in 2018.

Yesterday, Jackman also took to Instagram to celebrate The Greatest Showman soundtrack being the best-selling album of 2018.

Jackman himself shared the chart on his Instagram, showing that The Greatest Showman beat the likes of Drake, Post Malone and Ed Sheeran, in the United World Chart, with over 5.4 million units sold.


The 50-year-old star wrote: “Never in my wildest dreams.”

Other records for the soundtrack include it becoming only the second album in 30 years to spend 11 consecutive weeks at No 1.

Jackman’s also open to a sequel, telling BBC Radio 5 Live, “If a genuine opportunity came up where it felt like the right thing to do, then yep, I'd get the top hat back out."

“It’s clear to me and to everyone that people love these characters.

“I loved this movie, I loved this character and it was one of the great joys of my life.”

And to think that London did not have its own world premiere of The Greatest Showman! The European premiere was held in Paris, if I remember right? But Hugh did come to the UK after months of release - to join a singalong showing of the movie! Not too late the hero


It must have been the fascination with the movie and the soundtrack that also saw the scheduled dates in the UK of his Music TOUR originally from 4 shows ( 2 London O2/1 Manchester/1 Birmingham) to 11 shows ( 5 in London O2/3 in Manchester/3 in Birmingham)!

The movie, the music, the man are all celebrated in one of his home countries ( Hugh does carry a second passport - a UK passport because of his parentage)! I wonder -- will he be honored eventually in the Queen's Honors List someday?!!

I wish I could go to London for the music tour ( it was an option for me that did not work out) - it was where I first discovered Hugh Jackman, when he was Curly in Oklahoma! Of course, not too many knew of him then - I practically ignored his name, but noted that this male lead on stage had a powerful legit stage voice and a commanding stage presence! It took another 4 years for me to see him back on stage (The Boy from Oz).

I wonder who he will have as guests for the London stage? He has mentioned that he is interested to get some of his Ok! co-stars back on stage with him? Aunt Eller perhaps? Maybe Laurey?

On social media, some UK fans have already posted that they have tickets for multiple shows of THE MAN, THE MUSIC, THE SHOW


Back to The Greatest Showman -- the UK must also have the record for the most singalong screenings for the movie. They started the craze in a big way for this film musical. And extended it into the fall!


Any other records that the movie or the soundtrack have not yet cracked

It would probably have a different atmosphere in the shows in the UK, given how enthusiastically they have embraced the movie, the home video release, the soundtrack album, and even the singalong screenings ( indoors and outdoors)! And in a way, that is understandable -- they discovered Hugh Jackman first for international audiences when Trevor Nunn cast him in the Royal National Theatre's revival of OKLAHOMA! in 1998. Twenty-one years later, he will be back to thrill the UK audiences once more.

This was when British audiences first saw Hugh Jackman perform live on stage. This was at a command performance which celebrated the career of impresario Cameron Mackintosh. The show OKLAHOMA! had not opened at that time, but the cast ( Hugh primarily) was invited to present from their forthcoming stage revival of the musical.
