Sondheim can be a bit of an acquired taste because his work does not hew towards traditional musicals ( vintage Rodgers &Hammerstein or Lerner & Lowe or even Andrew Lloyd Webber) -- but he is the modern theatre's foremost exponent and most beloved on Broadway. Have you seen PASSION -- it is based on an old Italian tale and tells of an unusual story of unrequited love, with strong characterizations. But that was not the real surprise. It was arguably Sondheim most melodious work! Of course, Hugh has once said that his dream role was Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD, which is also an unusual tale of revenge in Victorian London -- this is Sondheim's most celebrated work. He does write occasional beautiful songs ( Send In the Clowns, or my own personal favorite I Remember from a little known TV musical Evening Primrose). He did also the lyrics of WEST SIDE STORY...and there was his funny comedy A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM. His other celebrated works include COMPANY, FOLLIES and SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE ( with Jake Gyllenhaal in the latest revival). And in the past, we heard Hugh sing a duet with Debra Byrne for two songs from INTO THE WOODS ( No One is Alone & Children Will Listen) But this is of course just speculation on my part -- assuming Hugh is talking of a new musical. The work is not yet finished and they haven't even decided on the final title ( BUNUEL is just a working title because it will be based on two movies by surrealist filmmaker Luis Bunuel). New musicals coming in for the 2018-2019 season are already cast ( such as Moulin Rouge, a stage adaptation with Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo). ALWebber is also working on a new musical but that won't be a few years away. Princess Bride was another possible new musical ( by Rodgers grandson Adam Guettel) but that seems to have been on the back burner now -- and Hugh would not be age-appropriate for the lead although he did that reading with Jason Reitman. What about THE GREATEST SHOWMAN ? From recent interviews -- *That doesn't seem to be quite ready. *Why will he "preview" the songs from an already very well-known chart-busting score?? Unless he is talking about new/additional songs for the stage adaptation -- didn't he say that Pasek and Paul are writing a new song for him to sing in his Music Tour, although it didn't seem to refer to The Greatest Showman. Although that could readily be the clue that his new book musical could also be THE GREATEST SHOWMAN - yay!!!!Just guessing Jo

Lol - Inigo Montoya! " You killed my father. Prepare to die!!" Not sure if Hugh would be interested in a role which would be like the Javert role, the antagonist We'll see... or we'll wait until he previews the promised new songs from his next project?? Unless it leaks earlier Jo
