*At present, they are only allowing LIMITED AVAILABILITY. I wonder if this is only for the GROUP SALES sale? Will Maximum Availability be allowed upon sale of Single Tickets?
*Based on the Group Sales Calendar, it looks like OPENING NIGHT is still going to be on October 22, 2020.
*Word of caution -- the performance times vary. Please check carefully as there are matinees at 1:00 pm and there are evening shows at 7:00 pm. Others have 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm show starts. Sunday matinee is at 2:00 pm.
*I am guessing here --
If there are three Mezzanine Levels -- does this mean that it will not be The Winter Garden? Or it could still be The Winter Garden, but they are slicing it into 3 sections, price-wise, according to seat desirability? This could also apply to the Shubert Theatre... or any other theatre choice?

According to this report, official word was sent out to group sales ticket agents re ticket prices for THE MUSIC MAN. The difference in the prices between this report and the Telecharge site presumably refers to the DISCOUNT ( close to 10%) given to GROUP SALES? The memo was sent out by the Shubert Organization, which is also the owner of TELECHARGE. broadwayjournal.com/hugh-jackman-sutton-foster-music-man-tix-top-out-at-499-for-now/What is not yet clear is what the OPENING NIGHT date is. The Telecharge ticket site ( and the way the matrix of ticket prices ( Date/Prices) are presented -- no tickets are offered for October 22, 2020, while tickets are on offer on October 15, 2020. Usually, no tickets are made available to the public for Opening Night, except for a few that can be available only a day or 2 before the actual date. The Official Website ( not much activity there) lists it at October 15, 2020 The above report says that the memo to group sales agents lists it at October 15, 2020. Also, would the Broadway Inbound site ( part of the Shubert Organization) invite the public to send in requests for tickets for a minimum of 20 at the prices quoted on their site ( which are slightly higher) if there is every intention to hike ticket prices significantly. I think that part of the above report may be purely speculative ( and may not have a real basis at this point) to encourage early buying. The top price for Hello,Dolly! was for the yearend of that year, which happens to almost all Broadway shows during the holiday break. Maybe they may reprice eventually, but presumably if these prices hold when individual sales start, Telecharge will honor the agreed on price at the time of the purchase? Jo

On Telecharge Ticket Page -- Will this be the final artwork for the show? No names are included presumably because it will be permanent, regardless of which cast is involved? Or is it just the identifying artwork on the Telecharge ticket site?

Re the ticket pricing -- The Music Man, based on the matrix for Broadway Inbound ( part of the Telecharge Organization) for group sales is charging $ 549 from Friday to Sunday and $ 495 from Tuesday to Thursday for TOP PREMIUM. Here is the latest matrix of current shows which shows the Average Ticket Price and the Top Price for current shows on Broadway : www.broadwayworld.com/grosses.cfmRe the Top Premium Pricing for current shows : *Hamilton is charging $ 849 *In the $ 500 range -- Moulin Rouge/Book of Mormon/Hadestown/Barry Manilow/To Kill a Mockingbird If Music Man charged lower than that range -- it might be perceived as less in quality or appeal? I am hoping that the revival will not just be a carbon copy of previous revivals. Such as more spectacular dance routines, maybe an additional song or 2 if the Willson allows it, maybe more sumptuous production design … and of course, there is Hugh Jackman ( who has not been back on Broadway in 5 years since The River). Will the prices change? Could happen if the demand is stronger than expected. Could happen after the show opens and is very well-received and word of mouth is very strong. Definitely at the yearend holiday break (Hello,Dolly! charged $ 998 during the yearend shows with Bette Middler)! Btw, based on the original exclusive THR report announcing the revival ( interview with producer Scott Rudin), single sales will start on September 15, 2019. It is also assumed by many that an AmEx presale will occur ( will that be on September 15?) before regular sale starts. Jo

While some non-theatregoers ( but went to see #tmtmts) might find the price structure "shocking" in the words of some Jackman fans (esp those who need to fly to NYC from overseas), I was quite surprised to read the recent level of discussions on the group sales pricing for The Music Man on BroadwayWorld ( BWW). Given how the discussions on BWW are usually on the negative side when it comes to theatre show pricing, this was quite unexpected ( but welcome). Please scroll down to the discussions re the announced price structure for group sales -- www.broadwayworld.com/board/readmessage.php?page=17&thread=1115321&dt=422In summary -- Many think that the pricing (esp for last row) for TMM is fair, given the current round of prices. What is interesting is that they feel that it is actually quite a good one if the show is announced at WinterGarden because it seems the MEZZ there is good viewing even at the last row. They think it would not be as fair if it is for the last row in a theatre with a balcony ( like Shubert/Imperial). They also discussed the dilemma posed by the current major success of To Kill A Mockingbird and the current level of success of Beetlejuice, because if The Music Man cannot yet announce the theatre, there cannot be a single sale date yet. For the group sales, it is treated more as reservations. The conclusion re the pricing was also because of the level of talent involved ( 2 theatre superstars). Of course the other consideration is the cost of moving to other theatres by Mockingbird and Beetlejuice ( which presumably will be borne by the moving-in show?). To be honest - I was mildly surprised when I saw the top premium pricing -- because I was almost in grave fear of something that is double in amount when the show was announced earlier ( given what Hello, Dolly! charged for the yearend on its first year ( $ 998)...and given the current pricing for Hamilton ($ 848 for regular performances). That meant also that the prices that graduated down to the lowest price for the show will be a good surprise for the general public. As a caveat, it doesn't mean that the announced price structure will not change thru to Sept 21, 2021. But it is expected there will be a stiff price rise on Dec 31, 2020 ( which all Broadway shows do) - if you look at the calendar on Broadway Inbound, there are no prices quoted for Dec 31, 2020 even if that is a performance date. We'll see how this develops ( re the single sales date announcement )….and whether we can hold on to our cash in vault much longer Jo

There has been some confusion on the Opening Night date for the show.
*It was initially announced for October 22, 2020.
*However, in more recent times, the official site lists it as October 15, 2020. Also, the supposed memo from the Shubert Organization to Group Sales agents mention October 15, 2020 as Opening Night.
*Broadway Inbound ( which actually handles TICKET requests for Group Sales, open to the public) initially lists it as October 22, 2020 ( and up to now appears as such on its main page). However, there has been a change on the ticket request page. It used to be that October 22, 2020 was NOT selling any tickets at all. But that has been changed now :
October 15, 2020 NO longer entertaining any ticket requests. October 22, 2020 now entertains ticket requests but ONLY for Premiums/MidPremiums and the Mezzanine sections. Rest of Orchestra are off-limits.
Could it be that they are still hedging by keeping orchestra tickets for October 22, 2020 unavailable except for Premiums? It is unlikely that Group Sales (with a minimum of 20 seats) for Premiums will happen much...and that would leave with a relatively free Orchestra for a second option for Opening Night?
Start of Previews on September 9, 2020 remains unchanged.
Btw, some amazing coincidences --
Per IBDB :
The Boy from Oz
Start of Previews - Sept 16, 2003 Opening Night - October 16, 2003

Excerpts --
Recently, I came across a message board discussion ( not ATC or BWW) where there were 1-2 posts saying that a planned revival of The Music Man was in the works and that Hugh Jackman will play the part of Harold Hill. This was in mid-February 2019, a month ahead of when the official announcement was made ( and when we learned about Hugh's return to Broadway). The posters said the info was not speculative but given by insiders. Maybe because of the January workshop mentioned by Sutton, word may have leaked out of the behind-the-scene activity?

A reply to the Playbill article on Sutton Foster on the Facebook Page of The Music Man --
A revival should not be expected to be a copycat of previous productions ( stage or film) but something fresh ( including casting, potential changes even in the score if the composer or the estate of the owner allows it, the direction, and other creative aspects) could be a welcome addition to the history of an acclaimed artistic work. For example, the first production of Les Miserables which was a major hit in Paris (1980) featured a baritone voice for Valjean (seemed more logical for a convict) but when the Mackintosh adaptation and first English version (1985) was staged, the Valjean songs were transposed to a tenor range because of Colm Wilkinson's vocal range... I have seen 2-time TONY winner Sutton only once on stage ( Drowsy Chaperone) but she was a surprising comedienne and an accomplished triple-threat. There is also the important aspect of stage chemistry with the lead ( Hugh Jackman) that must have been another factor in considering her for the role. Presumably she and the director have already discussed the role and both may have seen something in the character of Marian Paroo ( especially in her back story) that they may want to explore further.
As to Hugh Jackman - he has never failed to impress on stage for me ( having seen him in Oklahoma!, TheBoyFromOz, A Steady Rain, BackOnBroadway, TheRiver and in his music tour TheManTheMusicTheShow). Not many people know that Sutton sang the role of Charity in the first workshop for Hugh's passion project TheGreatestShowman featuring all Broadway performers. Let's hope this Music Man team and the rest of the cast and the creatives give us a remarkable revival of a classic that can stand toe to toe with the original!

Talking about "Till There Was You" - it still surprises me to this day that not all that many know the song came from The Music Man - it became more like a pop hit maybe because of the Beatles being identified with it I think the popularity of the song does not rely solely on the song being sung by a lyric soprano, as exemplified by the above video clips - it has to be the catchy melody, the simple but sincere lyrics...and of course the musicality and style of arguably the greatest band in music history...and in this case, especially that of Paul McCartney! From the Sutton interview -- Hugh has a break from the tour in early September - although he may have to attend the Toronto International Film Festival for the world premiere of BAD EDUCATION and he also needs time to prepare for and actually host the GLOBAL CITIZEN FESTIVAL in NYC on Sept 28… and the next lab/workshop in February may be an indication that REMINISCENCE filming may have wrapped that time ? Thanks, Sutton, for helping us figure out Hugh's calendar Jo

The Telecharge Ticket Page has now confirmed OCTOBER 15, 2020 as Opening Night!
This is now consistent with the Opening Night date on the official website!
No tickets are being offered to Group Sales ( presumably this will also happen for single sales) on October 15, 2020. Orchestra seats ( except for Premiums) are unavailable for Group sales on October 22, 2020 -- presumably there might be an event occurring then which might need putting orchestra seats unavailable for the general public.

Michael Reidel seems to think it will open at the Winter Garden nypost.com/2019/08/29/billy-crystals-mr-saturday-night-musical-scores-early-buzz/According to Reidel... '“Beetlejuice,” which everyone thought was squished after it opened last spring to mostly dreadful reviews, has shown surprising resiliency during the tourist-driven summer. Its producers, cheered by their summer grosses, think it could be the next “Cats.” Well, I hate to disappoint them, but “Beetlejuice” isn’t “Cats.” The Shuberts, who own the Winter Garden, have told “Beetlejuice” it has to vacate in the spring to make way for Hugh Jackman and his 76 trombones in “The Music Man,” which will open next fall. But the Beetlejuicers think their show has legs — six of them — and they’re trying to cut a deal with the Shuberts to move the show to another theater. For their sake, I hope Hugh doesn’t decide to do “La Cage aux Folles” one day at whatever theater they wind up in."

I was just going to post about Riedel's column. I hope he knows whereof he speaks because the Winter Garden's orchestra section is not as deep as the Shubert's, making standing room (for repeat visits, of course) much more inviting than it would be at the very deep and long orch section at the Shubert, where MUSIC MAN was originally rumored to be opening. (It seems a modern telling of CINDERELLA, also produced by MM producer Scott Rudin, is aiming for the Shubert.).

"Something's coming" ( to quote Sondheim) when I saw that the ticket page on Telecharge kept disappearing and appearing and disappearing Yes, there is also discussion going on at BWW. The Winter Garden is a musical house (with great/popular musicals having flourished there - West Side Story/Mame/Funny Girl/Follies/Cats/even Mamma Mia!), has more seats (1600 vs 1500 for the Shubert), has very wide side- to side proportions ( which is also good for accommodating the production onstage), has double the number of orchestra seats vs mezzanine ( more profitable for the production), and has no balcony ( very steep balcony!)! The Shubert has a balcony - good only for young/younger legs of the kids who will ask to see them ( while us older folks will find the trudge upwards very difficult). Excited much Jo

From the NYPost link ( Thanks, hughmanity) -- Theatre news, especially with exciting news like this is always welcome. Other than The Music Man, I am interested in ALW's( one of my favorite composers) take on CINDERELLA ( it will likely be more adult than Disney-always-for-the-young version) and maybe also The Lehman Trilogy ( as it deals with the collapse of the financial system). I don't live in NYC so I might have to do much squeezing to be able to see The Music Man a few times and consider other shows as well. How exciting! PS: Computing where I can get cheaper meals and cheaper tours and cheaper whatever-- to accommodate the inevitable pinching of my travel budget for the luxury of Broadway shows Jo
