I saw it in the UK and recognise the (well rehearsed) content of the show. His talent is to make the audience feel that they are the only ones to see this, that it is fresh and off the cuff at every performance. Honestly one of the best shows I have ever seen, but I do love Hugh!

The show itself is structured like a stage musical ( which given the theatre backgrounds of the top performer of this personal retrospective and the director is not unexpected) - with the narrative ( book) and the music well-strung together. It has been structured so each part is delivered in exactly the same way and the same amount of time - just like when you are seeing a theatre show. The only difference are occasional off-the-cuff remarks from Hugh ( depending on circumstances)...and just like in The Boy From Oz with its BICOASTAL moments, Hugh breaks the fourth wall and interacts with someone ( or 2) from the audience during the Peter Allen segment ( as if he is doing a revival of TBFO).

And Hugh himself said that " it is, in essence, a theatre show"!

I guess the people who see the show are a more diverse lot - -some may be theatregoers but maybe most are more used to other types of live entertainment.

Btw, the comments section in response to the article are interesting to read, as they represent more of a cross-section and often mirrors political/cultural views ( esp from Australians) to some extent.

Australia has produced more than its fair share of Hollywood superstars, but Hugh Jackman is unique in possessing the talent and the desire to fill live concert venues worldwide.

His latest global tour touched down at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Friday night, with Jackman – at 50 relaxed, dripping charisma and at the height of his powers as an all-round entertainer – standing ready to mesmerise an enthusiastic sold-out crowd.

Jackman’s autobiographical concert Broadway to Oz impressed in 2015, and this one’s even better. Kicking off with two numbers from The Greatest Showman – The Greatest Show and Come Alive – the star and his back-up dancers whipped up the kind of triple-threat storm musical theatre fans live for.


One thrilling aspect of seeing Jackman in the flesh is the way he can glide from high-octane showstoppers into a spontaneous, intimate rapport with the audience.

The show is a carousel of visual and sonic splendour – rock-concert style lighting and video projections, a stellar live orchestra, and not one but two choirs – yet the moments when Jackman stops the ride to tell honed personal anecdotes, or engage in playful banter with fans, command the highest form of charismatic authority: he makes you feel, in a stadium of 12,000 others, like you’re the only person in the room.



The multi-talented Australian will launch his first world tour next year, performing at arenas mostly reserved for pop, rock and rap stars.

His infectious love of Broadway provides many highlights. One set-piece combines songs from Les Miserables, with Jenna Lee-James soaring through I Dreamed A Dream. Another more pop-oriented sequence, dedicated to New York, time-travels from Frank Sinatra’s signature tune to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ Empire State of Mind.

Jackman reprises a mega-medley of Peter Allen songs – flouncing across stage maracas in hand for I Go To Rio; sitting down for his heartfelt acoustic version of Tenterfield Saddler. He sings as Gaston from Beauty and the Beast, swells into a huge choral number with You Will Be Found from the musical Dear Evan Hansen, and jazzes up classics such as Sing Sing Sing, Luck Be A Lady and Mack the Knife.

Although he seems pleased to have relinquished the role of hyper-masculine mutant Wolverine after 17 years, the star still enjoys mocking those who see musical theatre as an effeminate pursuit. They can stick Jackman’s furious tap-dancing routine (to Acca Dacca’s Thunderstruck, no less) in a pipe and smoke it.

Not all the glory belonged to Jackman. Keala Settle’s rendition of This Is Me from The Greatest Showman raised the arena’s retractable roof; the uplift soared into the stratosphere with her single Harder. And the Indigenous performers in the show anchored and deepened the last homecoming sequence by preceding it with Aboriginal language, music and song.

The show’s rousing farewell – split between From Now On and I Still Call Australia Home – proved a splendid finale for a star performer who seemed as delighted as his audience to be back on native soil.

Why there’s no one like greatest showman Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman not only has the X-factor, he packs the whole damn alphabet.

He is movie star gold, song and dance glitter, which, combined, equals showbiz platinum.

Jackman brought that showmanship, and shimmer, to a capacity-filled Rod Arena last night.

Of course, musical theatre is where Jackman started.

And, while he’s a bona fide Hollywood A-lister — best known for playing Wolverine — Jackman’s true superpower is that he’s stayed connected to those musical roots, and never forgotten where he’s from.

Indeed, he was in true blue Aussie mode last night, reciting fun facts and figures about Melbourne, including our brief status as the nation’s capital, and our new standing as a dog-owners’ epicentre.

Who knew? Hugh knew.

He also kept tabs on the cricket score, threw in a few Sydney jokes, and in one of the show’s strongest highlights, paid tribute to indigenous Australians.

Jackman recalled, as a younger man, gaining a strength of spirit after spending time in the outback with Aboriginal communities.

Jackman retold that story by sharing his stage with a collective of indigenous musicians and elders. It was a powerful moment.

Jackman’s musical theatre and movie star combo were fully realised in the 2017 film, The Greatest Showman. It was the perfect collision of his many talents.

The set list last night took from that film, including the signature song “This Is Me”, performed by Keala Settle.

Jackman also explored other musicals, including Beauty and the Beast and Les Miserables, before turning his attention to film favourites, and a surprising take on AC/DC and Van Halen classics.

The late Peter Allen, who Jackman played in The Boy From Oz, provided another standout moment, accentuated by the vibrant “I Go To Rio”, and tender “Tenterfield Saddler”.

By then, and through to an Allen-penned finale, Jackman had the crowd hooked.

He crooned, danced, tap-danced, played piano, bashed drums, Wolverine-flexed, and somehow, still find time to serenade his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness.

That’s not just entertainment. It’s bloody genius.

That Post-Gazette piece was one of the best reviews I’ve read of the tour. I wonder why he skipped “Mack the Knife” in Pittsburgh? Could be he went off on a fun tangent that took up more time than allotted. I’m curious. Any ideas from someone who was at that performance?

Hugh Jackman, el artista australiano conocido mundialmente por su interpretación de ‘Wolverine’, ha visitado la Ciudad de México para ofrecer un par de conciertos con un gran espectáculo titulado ‘The Man. The Music. The Show.’.

His visit to the city meant the last stop of his tour, as he said, and for that reason it surely became one of the great nights of this tour, because he could see the artist dancing tap, interacting with the assistants above the stage , and of course recalling his iconic character Wolverine, not before thanking not only the attendees of that night but all Mexicans for their love and support.
