LES MIZ has more post-production time now. Breaking news from Variety: new US release date is December 25.

I was wanting to see it on opening day but there's no way I can go on Christmas. Why did they change it? Did they push it back specifically to have more post-production time?

Great idea to change the date! They no longer have to contend with the Hobbit movie and Christmas is a great boxoffice time. This makes me happy!

I think Christmas Day is a terrible idea. The core audience for LES MIS will be in church, singing in church, conducting a choir, or making dinner for the kids and grand kids. Many families do not attend movies on Christmas Day. Instead of attending the midnight showing of a movie, many will be at Midnight Mass. KATE & LEOPOLD opened on Christmas Day and was a disappointment at the box office. AUSTRALIA opened on Thanksgiving and didn't do well. Even GODFATHER III didn't do well with a Christmas opening.
Also, how will this effect Golden Globe and Critics Awards deadlines?

It seems the suits are so high on the movie that they want to give it a prime date-- and Dec.25 is considered a big moviegoing day.

I've been reading all the film site and trade paper updates -- *The consensus is that it is a great move by Universal, as this time frame is considered good for the box office. In addition, it avoids a box office clash with The Hobbit ( which would have taken away the family-movie audience from Les Miserables...something that is unlikely with Django Unchained) *The movie itself has themes of faith, love, redemption, and idealism -- and even features some Christmassy scenes ( the fair, not shown on the stage version). *Tom Hooper's King Speech opened on Christmas Eve and went on to register more than $ 400 million at the box office and won its share of Oscar glory. *I may be wrong, but many people doubt that there will be a midnight showing, as this is not considered a tentpole or a blockbuster. *Re deadlines for awards submission -- it is pretty sure Universal and Working Title were well aware of the deadlines and are working them into the schedules. *This does not really add to their post-production schedules, as the awards deadlines will likely push them towards an end-November submission of requirements, something that may have already been planned earlier. *What it will probably do is give the marketing campaign an added boost - more time for the publicity push and, given the holiday-related opening, an added reason to push for a "Give yourself a Les Mis present on Christmas Day!!"This is going to ruin the scheduling of some of the overseas markets, especially in Asia ( where most will open in December before Christmas - although it is unlikely that Christmas is celebrated that much in most of them, except maybe for the commercial aspect - the Philippines is considered as the only Christian country, predominantly Catholic, in Asia). But I am grinning because I now have a much shorter wait because it will open on January 16 here One country got it right and one almost did -- *Spain, which is deeply religious and Catholic, has it scheduled originally for December 25! *Australia will see it on Boxing Day (December 26), a day of relaxation for Aussies. They may even get the two and a half Aussies there for the premiere ( Hugh, Russell, and half-Aussie Tom Hooper). Btw, it has been confirmed in some sources ( according to Kris Tapley, a noted film site blogger) that Hugh Jackman will be the only actor whose role who will be campaigned for as LEAD. Russell, Anne and maybe Samantha or anybody else perceived as outstanding will be campaigned for in the SUPPORTING category. Will come back with more outside observations later Jo

I understand them pushing the date back to distance it from The Hobbit - which is actually a very smart move - but I still don't like it being on Christmas day. Like Kathy mentioned, a lot of the movies that open then get a little lost. I'm hoping with a built in fanbase it'll be okay, I just find it disappointing that I won't be able to be there on opening day.

Me too. I wanted to be there on opening day and there's no way I can do that on Christmas Day and I doubt that I can even do it on Boxing Day. Too many family gatherings going on for both days as we spend time with my family and then my hubby's. I wish they'd have a "sneak peek" the week before or something. It's bad enough having to wait longer for this film now and then on top of that not being able to go and see it the day it comes out. Do you think my family would suspect anything if I said I'm just going to the bathroom and then return a few hours later?

Good point, njr, about Russel. And nevaeh, I'd say it's worth a shot! Hee! I'm just as happy with Christmas Day myself, as I have no family obligations that day. I just have to talk my aunt into taking me/going with me, since I have no car and the nearest good theatre is a half hour away. She's not a movie-goer, but she might do it for me! Fingers crossed!

[Nancy/quote] Aussies regard Russell as an Australian when he's winning awards, and a New Zealander when he's throwing phones at hotel staff LOL !!! Now Hugh--that's a different story. He often features amongst doctors, scientists and sportsmen in most popular, most trusted etc polls. Cheers

In one interview on BBC at about the time he visited London for Les Miserables tests, Hugh was talking about how he was ribbing his foreigner-colleagues because he himself did not have to line up at the non-British citizens queue at Immigration when entering the UK. First time I've heard that he is carrying a dual passport. He is half-Brit ( maybe because of his parents being British) I 've once heard it speculated that this was what explains why he was allowed to perform in "Oklahoma!" by the government-subsidized Royal National Theatre in London? Jo Many Aussies use British Passports when travelling to the UK or other EU countries, to avoid the queues for non EU citizens. My own experience earlier this year of waiting in line for nearly 2 hours to clear immigration at Heathrow after 22 hours flying, made me wish I had some recent English blood ! A bit ironic that the Queen of England is still our Head of State but we have less privileges than visitors from Britain's former battleground foes !! (and the Aussie taxpayers still pay for Royal visits !) I guess before too long Oscar and Ava will be old enough to beat their parents to the luggage carousels when arriving in the US , by virtue of their US citizenship. LOL Cheers

Back to Les Mis There are small teasers on the official Twitter and Facebook pages of Les Miserables to watch out for a "small treat" tomorrow!
Les Misérables 2 hours ago. Stay tuned to the Les Misérables page tomorrow, we might have a little treat for you...People are speculating whether this would be the second trailer or the small featurette shared by someone on IMDB shown with materials for a theatre screening. Ramping up the publicity now ?? Jo

This was posted on Facebook by someone who saw the special video --
>>>Sixty-One Drive In Not sure about a full trailer, but there is a new 4 1/2 minute featurette debuting this week in Regal Theatres that is about the process of filming the singing LIVE on set. It was on our latest trailer hard drive that arrived this week. Downloaded and watched it immediately. If this is "the treat" they are referring to ... you'll LOVE IT!! :-)<<<

I think either one is possible, Jo - either it's a second screening, or the actual interview was conducted just before the screening on the 8th.
