LOS ANGELES—As promised, we continue our report on our “Les Miserables” (the much-awaited film adaptation of the stage musical) set visit last May. This time, we are featuring excerpts from our interview with Hugh Jackman:

Hugh, in full costume as Jean Valjean, talked to us during a shooting break at UK’s Pinewood studios. Russell Crowe (Javert), Anne Hathaway (Fantine) and Amanda Seyfried (Cosette) also star in the musical, directed by Tom Hooper and produced by Cameron Mackintosh, based on Victor Hugo’s novel.

Hugh described the scene that we were about to watch: “Today’s the barricade scene, so we’re in the midst of the revolution. The students are there amid the barricade, and my character disguises himself as a soldier to sneak past them and comes in as a volunteer to get behind. What he’s really doing is he’s coming to find Marius, because he’s intercepted a letter from Marius to Cosette, my daughter, declaring his love, and it says, ‘Now, I know you love me, too.’ So, this is where I finally meet the boy and I get embroiled in this fight.”

We heard Hugh sing live (the cast performs the songs live, which sets this movie musical apart) in take after take of this scene, so that tune lingered in our mind for days.

Not only did Hugh sing live on the first day of the shoot; he crooned in freezing temperature in the Alps. He said, “We started in the Alps, which was fantastic, because we were in an area in France that the book is set in.

“Literally, there was no acting required. You can see the steam, you can hear the cold in my voice as I’m singing. The brilliance, the guts of Cameron, Tom and of everyone to decide to have the songs sung live right through gives the songs immediacy—we discovered that on the very first day.”

On singing with his fellow Aussie, Russell Crowe, Hugh remarked, “Remember, we had seven weeks of rehearsal. You can’t turn up at a musical and just hope to do it.”

Effortless presence

“I can’t imagine anyone other than Russell playing Javert,” Hugh said. “He brings such weight and strength. There’s an effortless presence about Russell that commands attention, which is great for Javert.

“Russell’s a great actor. I’ve always believed great actors make other actors look good. I can tell you from acting with him that it feels as easy a job as I’ve ever had, because he’s so present and connected.”

Hugh said that he’s been friends with Russell for a long time. He revealed, “Privately, he’ll never tell you, but he’s been very helpful to me on a few occasions, ‘Wolverine’ being one of them. He was offered that part, and he suggested me to Bryan (Singer, director).

“I’ve also rang him a few times on life and career choices. I asked his advice, and he has always been helpful.”

Brilliant guitarist

Hugh stressed that Russell is musically inclined. “He’s a brilliant guitarist, so he can back anyone up. On one of the first nights he was here, he rang up at nine in the evening. He goes, ‘Do you want to have a bit of a sing?’ I was like ‘Oh yeah!’ So, we went to his place and started singing.”

Hugh was equally effusive in his praise of his female co-stars, including Samantha Barks. He recounted, “I walked on the set as Samantha was doing the last take of the big song, ‘On My Own.’ The applause on that set was so massive from everybody. They’d been standing in the rain for five hours. It gave me the chills. This movie is going to launch Samantha in a massive way.”

Of Anne Hathaway, Hugh said, “I’ve sung with Anne at the Oscars. Annie has been singing since she was 8 years old. If she weren’t a movie star, she would have done Broadway now for at least 10 years. She is the real deal. When she turned up at rehearsal, I knew that Annie could sing. She’s extraordinary!

“Amanda (Seyfried) is also fantastic in this,” Hugh added. “And the little girl who plays the young Cosette—oh my God, your heart will break for Izzie (Isabelle Allen)! She’s never been in a film before.”

Wouldn't it be a great night for a pop/rock concert, if Russell can get Hugh and the rest of the Les Mis gang together, even if only for one night of performances! Filmed for charity, of course!!

Has anyone seen this "behind the scenes" feature in a theater?


Theater owners also prefer their own "prepreview," which features paid ads for a variety of products. Some feel like trailers in disguise. Just as the real trailers are about to begin, Regal in some theaters has been showing a five-minute behind-the-scenes promo for the coming "Les Misérables." Universal Pictures and Regal would say only that it was neither a paid ad nor a trailer, but a "special promotional thing."

I never knew that there are official limitations on the length of trailers --

Theaters are happy that trailers can't exceed 2½ minutes, the limit decreed by the Motion Picture Association of America to level the playing field for competing studios. Informally, every studio is granted one exception a year for an "event" movie, like "Avatar" in 2009, whose preview was 3½ minutes long.

Was the Extended Look featurette a way of circumventing the length limits by calling it a "special promotional thing"?

Okay, I have been bemoaning the marketing approach to publicizing the movie on another board but this was definitely a feather in the cap!

Talking of 2 1/2 minute-trailers ---

There is confirmation of a second trailer shown in many screenings of SKYFALL in the UK and another one in Japan.

But it seems it is not being uploaded online? I wonder why??

The first teaser is kind of getting stale ( it is almost 5 months old). If not for the Extended Look video, we would not have heard sung words from Hugh!

Also, they should release information, maybe via a trailer, to show that this is a sung-through movie musical. I hope people do not walk out because they were never informed ( via a full trailer) that it is wall-to-wall singing, except for some dash of spoken dialogue ( like the pinch of salt in any recipe ).

If you check the short meaning of the smiley indicated below the icon, it says COOL

Nancy's right Jo! Valerie changed a lot of the icons, but the "same" meanings were left from the old icons that they replaced! For instance, under the "Happy Dance" you'll see it says ANGRY, under the "Group Toss" you'll see it says TONGUE, and under the "Clapping" icon it says UNDECIDED. The "Roll on the Floor Laughing" icon still has COOL underneath it even though it doesn't match.

Are you seeing the same icons that we're seeing Jo? Or do you still see the old ones?

Mine are still displaying the old icons and the old meanings. So, are the actual icons that my posts are displaying showing up as another icon on yours?

Should I have changed something to get to the new ones? I read the discussions then but wasn't aware that I may have had to reset something.

No problem Jo. Nancy was having the same problem too. Go to the thread "Questions, Comments, Suggestions" around pages 4 or/and 5 where Val says,

"I've done a bit of experimenting. A few new emoticons are functioning, but I can't alter what they are called so some of the names are incongruous. Ignore the name and just select the "look" you want.

I've also set the "Aussie Flag" as the default "skin" for the Forum because this is where I swapped emoticons. If you have selected one of the two "Red Board" skins you will not see the changes."

Back to regular programming !

Hugh is going to be one busy man --

*Winding up filming duties for The Wolverine! I wonder if he has any post-production duties as Producer? I think it was mentioned earlier that post-production may also be done in Sydney, as part of the jobs and tax deal associated with the project. He can sure use a teleporting mutant power!

*Attending the various special screenings - maybe mostly in LA...but there could also be one or two in NYC ( like for the NY Film Critics and other guilds?)? Will they also do some special screening for BAFTA in London or would the December 4 premiere suffice? Also, some people on other boards have noted that Hugh's charming ways plus the fact that he " has earned some serious goodwill" with the AMPAS members for the 2009 Oscars hosting ( according to someone who posts on the IMDB board whose parents are AMPAS and BAFTA members) will be needed for the Oscar campaign.

*Doing the promotional campaign for the movie release -- media tours, talk shows, other events. This must be the most exhausting part of promoting a movie! I wonder if there might some midnight showings -- he did turn up twice for an XMEN midnight screening.

*Attending various premires for the movie - London, NYC, Hollywood...maybe Paris?...maybe Tokyo?...and most likely in Sydney ( movie opens there on Dec 26).

Then maybe after a holiday rest --

*A supposed first act workshop for Houdini?

*Early 2013 filming for PRISONERS.

*More promotion for the Oscar/Golden Globe/other awards ? Golden Globes are on January 13 while the Oscars are on February 24, 2013! He's tipped to win the GG Musical/Comedy Best Actor award (fingers crossed!), but I do not know what kind of publicity work he needs to do for that. He did have that May interview and set visit at Les Miserables with some members of the HFPA, though!
