Thanks!
That is a very insightful blog from someone who is from the academe. I hope the movie not only gathers new fans of musicals and Hugh but also of the novel itself!

The advance publicity campaign continues. Empire Magazine has put together this matrix of the singing skills of the major cast. www.empireonline.com/features/les-miserables-singers/I had hoped though that the writer had done his homework a little better -- *Valjean's signature song is not just WHO AM I , but also BRING HIM HOME *Javert's showstopper is STARS *Enjolras will probably be better remembered for leading the singing in DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING. Also, some omissions re musical theatre backgrounds -- *Hugh's stint with Sunset Boulevard, when that is the only musical theatre play which is sung-through in which he was involved. *Albeit early in his career, Russell was in BLOOD BROTHERS and THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW. And where did he pick up that Hugh had two one-man shows recently? LOL! Btw, Empire is a British movie magazine and is actually very well-regarded. I am just a little surprised that there were some oversights re this first major feature on Les Miserables ( haha - I am being overly sensitive ;D). I am hoping that they will feature Les Miserables as a cover story, closer to its release date in December - with more informative insights and exclusive photos! Jo

In case you're interested here is a clip of the original London cast at the 1985 Oliviers -- www.youtube.com/watch?v=POzelslF8xE&sns=twAmazing performances, which paved the way for the continuing run of the stage musical and now the filmization as a movie musical! Patti Lupone ( Fantine), Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Frances Ruffelle ( Eponine), Michael Ball (Marius), Rebecca Caine (Cosette), David Burt(Enjolras), Alun Armstrong ( M Thenardier), Sue Jane Tanner (Mme Thenardier), Roger Allam ( Javert) -- the leads in the original London production! Patti won for Best Actress in a Musical, but Colm Wilkinson as best actor and the musical itself both lost to ME AND MY GIRL When it came to Broadway, Les Miserables won the TONY for Best Musical, Colm and Frances who came with the production also won ( Best Actor, Best Featured Actress) for that season. Can you believe this was all of 27 years ago ( this was December 1985)??!! Hugh had just turned 17 years old then ... He would have even been a little too young to play Enjolras, which many think would have been an excellent role for young Hugh! Jo

I never realized how badly shorn or cropped they had done to his head of hair until I saw this HD close-up! I think this could actually be more traumatizing than the pixie-ish haircut that Anne had to go through. Jo

Wonder what they put in his eyes to get them so bloodshot?

He may have avoided Les Miserables...but there is the possibility he may encounter The Wolverine next summer ;D No escaping Hugh, Baz Talking about Baz, Hugh seems to look to him when he needs to do a spectacular stage number -- *The Musical is Back number in the 2009 Oscars *Presumably the Over the Rainbow segment from Back on Broadway. You can tell I'm a technophobe who visits Facebook maybe three or four times a year. After you select the small circle next to Hugh's name, do you have to hit "enter" or does it automatically register?

Ellen, LOL - it was frustrating for me, too. I kept hitting the circle before Hugh's name and there was no message that my vote had been counted, until I unwittingly clicked on the list and saw my name. Jo ( no known-techie, either)

The Entertainment Weekly Fall movie preview issue just arrived, and it features Les Miz for the month of December (it's not yet on their web site - watch for it.) It includes a beautiful picture of Anne and Hugh.
Hugh, Russell Crowe and Tom Hooper are quoted in the article, and they emphasized the demanding audition process. Hugh described his audition in front of Hooper, Mackintosh, Schonberg and Boublil and said, "After three hours I put my hand up and said, 'Tom? I've got to put my kids to bed now.'" Russell Crowe said he hadn't had to audition for a role since 1999!

Don't you wish you could have witnessed those auditions? In my college years, I auditioned for scholarships, choral groups, and recitals. I always wore a long skirt so that no one could see my knees knocking. I've also directed shows where i've had to watch my own students audition. It's always stressful, no matter who you are. Can you imagine what it was like for these great actors to go through this audition process? Maybe on a future DVD incarnation of this film, the auditions can be included as extras (if Hooper filmed them). Again, wouldn't it have been great to witness these actors auditioning? Wow.

"I've seen your face before Show me some way to help you How have you come to grief In such a place as this" Just guessing that those are the recitatives that accompany that beautiful reproduction of the scene . Also, I do like that little icon of Oscar on the upper left hand corner of the photo Jo
