Coronavirus vaccine ‘could be ready by Autumn’, top scientists say

A coronavirus vaccine could be ready much sooner than previously thought with scientists behind a major UK trial setting a ‘highly ambitious’ target of six months.


Oxford University researchers say the breakthrough treatment could be ready by Autumn 2020 in ‘the best case scenario’.
However, the team warned that it was still trying to source funding for manufacturing the potential drug.

Scientists around the world are racing to find a vaccine against Covid-19, with several trials underway. The Oxford trial has recruited more than 500 volunteers aged between 18 and 55 who will begin the tests this month following an ‘overwhelming’ response.

Asked about the timescale for a potential roll-out, if successful, the researchers told The Daily Telegraph: ‘The best-case scenario is that by the autumn of 2020 we have the results about the effectiveness of the vaccine from a phase III trial and the ability to manufacture large amounts of the vaccine.’



The UK’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, has previously said a vaccine was 12 to 18 months away from being developed and distributed to the masses.

The Oxford team acknowledged that their ‘best case time frame’ was ‘highly ambitious’ and subject to change.

They said: ‘We are currently trying to source additional funding for the scale-up of vaccine manufacturing to produce enough doses for deployment.’


The team also warned that if the peak of disease transmission arrives before the vaccine is ready for trials, the studies will be ‘challenging’.
‘If virus transmission has stopped, then it is impossible to assess whether the vaccine can prevent disease’ they said.


‘At the moment it is not possible to identify who has already been infected, and if the virus is spreading quickly throughout the population it might be difficult to find unexposed people to take part in the trial.’
Participants remain in the trial for six months, attending appointments at the Oxford Vaccine Centre for screening.


Almost 2,000 people are taking part in coronavirus trials at 100 hospitals around the country, with vaccinations hailed as the only hope in society turning fully back to normal.

Sure Wolverine “isn’t very nice” — but the guy who plays him sure is.

Actor High Jackman sent pizzas to a Manhattan police precinct on Thursday afternoon, supporting some of New York’s Finest during the coronavirus pandemic.

Along with five pies, the Australian actor attached a note reading “Thank you to the heroes 010 Chelsea’s NYPD, from the Jackmans,” signed by him and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness, according to a tweet by the precinct.

“A big Thank You to Hugh Jackman @realhughjackman for delivering pizza to the 10 Precinct! We appreciate the support!” the account tweeted back, along with a picture of the note and three beaming officers flashing the pies.

More than 2,000 cops have tested positive for coronavirus, and 15 members of service have died. Thousands more are out sick, according to officials.

The tweeter is missing the point.

What the Jackmans did with their gesture is to thank the Precinct with a personal touch. And he has been doing this to different institutions, sometimes by sending LAUGHING MAN COFFEE. Giving food has been a social institution ever since!

The note is personal and gracious... the entire family signed it. But where are the paw marks of 2 other members of that family

Pizza, although not of a national origin, has become an American institution.

I remember when I went to NYC for Hugh's MSG concert... I had just arrived from LGA and was staying with a niece at her place near the Theatre district. She said that she cooked Filipino food for me!

LOL - I told her -- No way … I want to go out, walk around to feel the twilight New York air...then eat PIZZA and CHEESECAKE! Both food I identify with a once-adopted city!

I certainly wouldn't get vaccinated with a not enough tested vaccine that was brought way too hasty to market and might have too many harmful secondary effects - only to make the pharmaceutical industry and its profiteers wealthier! I just mention the Pandemrix scandal and the two-class swine flu vaccination when politicians and other "important" people got a different vaccine than average citizens .... Just saying.

Los Angeles — Like everybody else, Hugh Jackman is self-sheltering.
When we talked to him via video conferencing recently, the 51-year-old Australian actor revealed he and the family were in New York City.


So how is he coping with the lockdown and self-isolation?

“One of the things that I come back to a lot right now is the meditation, because meditation for me is accepting that the surface of the water which is our daily life can be calm, tranquil and beautiful one day and it can be rocky and treacherous the next,” he said. “No matter what is on the surface there is calm to be accessed beneath the water, which is why I have done meditation for 25, 30 years. I obviously keep that routine and it’s helped me a lot because I worry mainly for my kids.

“I’m not scared for myself. I’m worried about them and their mental state and school and not being around friends and the disruption. Also just that pervasive anxiety that feels to be around and I don’t want that to impact them too harshly. Anecdotally, we walk our dogs obviously and there are some people who I am talking to now who I’ve never seen for 10 years and we have never spoken. People seem to have more time. They speak to each other. They talk to each other and the optimist in me hopes that that will continue, that there will be a shared sense of what is most important and a shared sense of community. Hopefully that is what will come out of it.”


In the new biographical dark comedy, “Bad Education,” Hugh plays Dr. Frank Tassone, a charming school superintendent. The movie is inspired by the true story of the multi-million-dollar embezzlement scandal in public school history at a popular Long Island school district at Roslyn, New York in 2004.



Is money important to him just like his character in the movie? And considering the conditions that we are currently in, did his views on money change?

“You know the saying, ‘Humans plan, God laughs,’ I am guilty of it too,” he admitted. “We get into our own personal agendas or for our family and we are planning. I have got to do this and I have got that job and life is very important and I am moving and I have got to get it fast and I don’t have time for you. Somehow this situation has made everyone step back and look at why or look at all our plans that we obsessively create, and take notice of other people and take notice of their plans.

“Simplify things, because the only thing we can be sure of is change in this life and yet somehow we keep hanging onto solidity. Everything is going to be the same tomorrow as today and everything is going to be good and house prices will always go up and the stock market will go up and all of that. But we don’t know that. The only thing that we can really rely on is community and being there for each other, family. And that sense of community I think has got a lot stronger here because this is, and I am not just talking about within each country, this is a world pandemic, everyone’s in the same situation.

“I can’t think of any time in history that has gripped the entire planet at the same time. And so hopefully we have a chance I think to come together. It’s interesting because I’m very blessed, obviously the situation I’m in but there are many people struggling. There’s a lot of people in our business, I’m not just talking the actors and crew members, I’m talking ushers and there’s so many, in Australia alone there’s 600,000 people who are employed in the entertainment industry currently without a job. So it’s a really difficult time. Money is not the most important thing to me but I am also aware that I am speaking from a very privileged position.”
