but what I am really excited about is ... a few minutes in... one of the podcasters recalled a tweet from a Warner Bros insider that said " this film is really special"!


If WB has that kind of expectations about it -- it will likely get a very good promotion campaign. We have already seen the start of a brilliant marketing campaign.

*always the focus of attention ( film is directed by Denis Villeneuve, whose first Hollywood film was Prisoners)

hope, they give REMINISCENCE equal or similar attention to push it for awards consideration ( assuming the film itself turns out to be a critical hit).

Hugh Jackman in his latest film “Reminiscence” will take you on a journey through your memories — even if there’s a past you’d be best served to forget.

“Reminiscence” comes from director and writer Lisa Joy, who co-created “Westworld” and cast Jackman as “a private investigator of the mind,” someone who helps his clients access lost memories and relive them and their emotions. But he soon becomes obsessed with the past when he takes on a new client and tries to find the truth about a woman’s disappearance.

“Nostalgia became a way of life. There wasn’t a lot to look forward to,” Jackman’s character says in the film. “Nothing is more addictive than the past.”


Though it sounds like it has traces of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” Joy in a press event on Wednesday said “Reminiscence” was inspired shortly after the death of her grandfather and her desire to understand how nice it would be to go back and feel exactly the way you felt when you first experienced those memories. She described caring for her daughter and wishing she could bottle her specific smell, knowing that she’d never be able to recreate that specific moment.

“It’s those small moments that mean everything,” Joy said. “How much of life that we value is in those small moments?”

But she admitted that though the film has sweet and sobering roots, “Reminiscence” is a script filled with action, thrills and film noir elements.

The movie is also set in the near future in which Miami has now been flooded and people live inside walls of the sunken Miami coast, with the entire society now turning nocturnal and sleeping when the sun is out for just a few hours each day. In the aftermath of the flooding, a war broke out that now leads people to look back on the past rather than a doubtful, miserable future.

Also starring in “Reminiscence” are Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton and Daniel Wu. The film is debuting both in theaters and on HBO Max from Warner Bros. on August 20. Check out the first trailer above.

Lisa Joy did say in that long-ago interview with her scriptwriting mentor (Scott Myers) that the script was partly influenced by "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".

The film noir influence is very strong in the trailer. Hugh did look like a mid-50's detective of the past century...and he did say he was portraying someone more like Humphrey Bogart. “Think Wolverine meets Humphrey Bogart,” said Joy in an interview with Deadline.com. Rebecca also looked like a screen siren of the past ( her clothes and her hairstyle).

It seems though that many have the impression that this is really an original story even if there are past influences suggested in it.

Let me refresh some notes from the first report from Deadline when they interviewed Lisa Joy Nolan --

A little bit about the characters and the love story. The beating heart of this, is the love story. For me, there’s a reference within the film, but it’s loosely inspired by that myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Orpheus is this man who’s a wonderful singer, and the love of his life, Eurydice, dies. She’s bitten by a snake and goes down to hell and Orpheus’ grief is so extreme that he descends into hell, of his own volition, to try and barter with the devil and get his love back. And the song that he sings, is so beautiful and pure of heart, that it even moves the devil himself. He says, you can have your life back, you can take Eurydice back to the world, on one condition: don’t look back. As you’re descending up to the mortal realm, you can’t look back at her. The struggle is, will he or will he not look back. It started me thinking about love, itself. Both my philosophy on love, and there’s this meta-philosophy about film.

For me, love, and I married my love and we’ve been married a long time, but love is an ever changing thing. You fall in love with one person, but that’s not who they are, entirely. An entire person takes awhile to discover. It’s not just the glossy exterior. There are regrettable moments, from their past and that will happen in the future. There are flaws and darkness, along with the light and the beauty. For me, true love means not just seeing the good and saying I love you, but rather seeing all of it, the entire portrait of a human being, flaws and all, and saying, you. I love you. The greatest act of love is seeing, unconditionally, and accepting. In this movie, in order for Bannister to be reunited with his love, that’s exactly what he has to do. He has to learn to see her.

For me, in terms of film and TV, and it’s something I think about a lot on Westworld, it’s the ideas of tropes in femininity and masculinity. Film has this way of being able to say, push closer. Look at this person, fully. Don’t just look at who they should be, or who society thinks they should be. Try to embrace all of them. For me that’s really important for the women and the male characters. A lot of time in thrillers and any kind of major genre films, the women are either the good girl, a little bit passive and waiting around for love. Or they’re the bad girl, that comes with sexuality and all sorts of things that are thought of as more risqué. And the truth is, that’s complete nonsense. Women have just as many multitudes as men. And men have more dimension to them than we are usually allowed in film. This odyssey in love is seeing characters, fully. Both the women and the men.





That’s why casting was critical for these really challenging roles. For the woman, you have to be the romantic hero, the siren, the girl who needs saving, the girl with secrets. All twists and changes. While Bannister is discovering that about the woman, he’s going through his own changes and you see different sides of him. He starts just as the laconic veteran of a war who’s a bit closed off. He opens up into this emotional creature with this woman. He goes through these twists and turns within his own arc that take him through from hero to villain and potentially back again. And you have to be with all of these characters and totally understand their emotional landscape, throughout.


All the years I was writing this, I would see the scenes fully in my mind and I was directing it and planning the set pieces and drawing the artwork for the world. The one person who was always in my mind, from the first day, was Hugh Jackman. It’s this crazy love story and it’s totally unreal to me. I drew his costume on him, I have all these sketches and I thought, it has to be him. This is a man who, whatever character he inhabits, whether it’s in Prisoners, or The Greatest Showman, he has a range that’s like that of a character actor. You always believe his characters. He has so much heart. Even if he’s playing a flawed character. You can just see that heart underneath that and you forgive him because you see in his flaws, your own.


Then you couple that with, my God, he’s Wolverine. The most charismatic, handsomest movie star. The idea he’s all those things combined, with the sensitivity and the action, the sheer physicality to pull off this physically demanding role. He was all I could picture. I didn’t talk to anyone else. I sent him an email and went out to meet him and we talked about the script. I stayed so long, they were like, you want to have dinner here? We were in his living room that long. I decided to leave him to dinner with his family and not encroach anymore. It was an instant connection in that way. He totally viscerally understood and inhabited that character.


I just recorded some voiceover with him and it was so moving to see him say these words that I’d imagined in my head so long. The life he brought to them was even better and more nuanced than I had imagined. That’s my lead.


Once I started talking to Hugh, it was, who do I find for May, his romantic partner, this mysterious and elusive woman? For me, these films are always about the woman. It has to be someone who, you want to be her, you want to be her friend, you understand her, even if she’s doing something morally compromised. When I started watching Rebecca Ferguson, I was blown away. In very intense scenes with huge movie stars, my eyes would drift to her because she was this powerful core in the center of this whirlwind film. She has this intelligence to her eyes and her performance speaks volumes. You just want to keep looking closer to figure out who she is. She’s got this timelessness to her performances that defies expectations and she’s beautiful and sexy. But that is literally just the tip of the iceberg.


She’s riveting and you can see all these emotions, roiling underneath her surface. One of my favorite actresses is Lauren Bacall, especially in To have And Have Not. I thought, who’s the actress today who could do that line, “You know how to whistle, don’t ya?” Who is that person who can have every man, woman and child lean forward and just stop breathing for a second? For me, that’s Rebecca Ferguson. Then, unbelievably, this builds into a love connection where my emails are now just filled with the back and forth with Rebecca Ferguson, where we are finishing each other’s sentences when we talk. It’s a really great creative match, and they have great chemistry. They worked together before, and I thought, I want to see more of you guys together. I want this to be the main story and now it can be.”

Re-reading this -- has further increased the expectations from the intended movie!

Saturday AM Update: Universal’s F9 grossed in one day what some movies have made in a weekend during the pandemic, earning $30M on Friday, on its way to a 3-day of $68M. No question about it, that’s the best opening day and weekend we’ve seen during the pandemic, and more proof that moviegoing is getting back on its feet.

There are some apprehensions that summer movie-going may not be keen enough this year, as the USA is just emerging into a relative post-pandemic world. But it seems that tentpoles like the franchise for F-9 are what are needed to energize movie-going. The news is not as vigorous for the overseas markets as the pandemic has not yet loosen its grip in many countries.

Reminiscence, not being a franchise, may not generate as much ticket sales but at least the attitude of the movie-going public is beginning to look positive and optimistic. One Box Office disadvantage for Reminiscence is that it will be released simultaneously in cinemas and streaming. Will WarnerBros change its strategy - there are no indications as of now. However it has rejuggled the time slots for some of its major releases like DUNE (they don't want it to compete with the latest James Bond movie).

Reminiscence, based on the trailer, has given the indication that it will also be an action thriller, apart from its dramatic theme of love vs obssession, as well as being partly a sci-fi movie. Many of fan comments on the trailer cite the comparisons with Wolverine/action films & Nolan movies which are sci-fi ( like Inception) so those sound favorable to this movie's reception at the newly emerging theatrical box office.

Let's hope late summer is still a good time to watch a movie especially in the USA.

Hugh Jackman fans have shared their excitement as the trailer for his new film Reminiscence has been released.

Written and directed by Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy, Reminiscence is a sci-fi thriller set in a post-apocalyptic world.

Jackman stars as Nick Bannister, a man with the power to allow people to relive the past.

“When the waters began to rise and war broke out, nostalgia became a way of life,” Jackman is heard saying in the trailer. “There wasn’t a lot to look forward to, so people began looking back.”

However, when one of his client’s memories implicates his new love interest Mae (Rebecca Ferguson) in a series of violent crimes, Nick sets out to figure out her dark past and the underworld she inhabited.

The trailer debuted on Thursday (3 June), with fans left in anticipation to see both Jackson and Ferguson’s performances.

“I just know that Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Ferguson are going to EAT UP this role,” one commenter wrote.

“This film is going to be masterpiece,” another fan tweeted, while one comment read: “Mighty impressed with the trailer and the poster is great too. Best thing about this is that it doesn’t look like pretentious sci-fi fare.”

Everything You Need to Know About ‘Reminiscence’: Hugh Jackman, Director Lisa Joy, and More Pull Back the Curtain on Their Sci-fi Noir

Reminiscence details

Since its premiere, HBO’s Westworld inspired its audience to become internet detectives, lighting up Reddit boards and social media with theories as they tried to solve the mysteries co-creator Lisa Joy helped concoct. Joy knows that viewers will want to get ahead of a mystery any time one is at the heart of a story. In her first feature film, the science fiction mystery film Reminiscence, hints about the plot can be found in the movie’s score, which is composed by Westworld‘s Ramin Djawadi.

The music is “incredibly important,” Joy explained during a press event yesterday ahead of the debut of the film’s first trailer. Each of the film’s main characters has a theme, and if you listen closely, there are clues in the score to help guide you to what’s really going on in this obsessive mystery tale.

We learned a lot more about Reminiscence from Joy and stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, and Daniel Wu. Here’s what you need to know.


A House and a Name
Reminiscence came about at an “interesting crossroads” in Joy’s life. At her grandparents’ home in the English countryside, there was a plaque on the stone house “announcing the name of the home, as if it were some kind of grand manor,” which she had been curious about since her childhood. In the wake of her grandfather’s death, she visited his home and among his belongings she stumbled across a photo of a beautiful woman with a name inscribed on the back – the same name that was on the plaque. The realization that her grandfather had this relationship that meant so much to him that he named his house after this woman but never spoke of her to the rest of his family made Joy “start to think about memory and our lives in general, and the moments that pass by and maybe disappear,” and “how nice it would be to be able to go back to those memories fully for a moment.”

A Wholly New Sci-fi World
Wrapping that core idea in trappings of action, thriller, noir, and science fiction, Joy came up with the idea for Reminiscence, which is set in the near future in a half-flooded Miami. The water has risen and there are walls in place to block more from encroaching onto what’s left. The story takes place in the aftermath of a war, and there’s an international community of people left within the city’s borders, disassociated from their past. Because it’s so hot during the day, all of the daylight hours have turned into siestas, and the city is now nocturnal.

During the war, technology was developed to interrogate enemies – technology that allowed people to fully relive their memories. Nick Bannister (Jackman) was an interrogator during the conflict, but now uses that technology to help people access lost memories or relive their favorites in a world that relies on nostalgia to help them get through the misery of each day. Bannister, whom Jackman refers to as “a fairly broken man” when we first meet him, runs a struggling business with his pal Watts (Thandiwe Newton), described by Joy as “the toughest lady there was” and a soulful, stoic friend to the protagonist.

Future Noir
One day, a mysterious woman named Mae (Rebecca Ferguson) walks into their office looking for a set of keys, and a torrid love affair sparks between Nick and Mae. “He’s not expecting anyone to rock him” the way Mae does, Jackman said, pointing out that his character falls for her – hard. But soon into this whirlwind romance, Mae disappears and Nick becomes obsessed with finding her. Joy said Nick goes into “a very dark world where he tries to investigate what happened to her, who she really was, and what she really wanted.”

That aspect sounds like – well, it sounds like a lot of movies, but the first recent film that came to mind was David Robert Mitchell’s Under the Silver Lake, which starred Andrew Garfield as a loser who becomes obsessed with a missing girl. “As [Nick] goes down into this dark path of the underworld,” Jackman said, “he’s constantly getting fed information that should make him doubt, but he’s so sure in his gut that their love was real.”

A Mysterious Cast
As for the Mae character, she’s something of a cypher in the movie. “One of the first things we talked about was questioning your persona: the whole idea of who we really are,” Ferguson explained of her early meetings with Joy about the role. Notions of perception and identity were paramount to unlocking her depiction of Mae. “We are seeing this character build through the eyes of really every other character but herself, and I found that really challenging.”

On Nick’s quest to find Mae, he encounters St. Joe (Daniel Wu), a Chinese-American kingpin living in New Orleans. Wu says it will probably be the first time you see a Chinese guy with a Southern accent on screen, and after he was hired, Joy tweaked the character specifically for Wu’s strengths. “I wanted to use his physicality and soulfulness,” she said, describing him as a “formidable force, while also allowing us to see that the portrait of good and evil is never so black and white.” Wu filled in some of his character’s backstory: while Nick Bannister was interrogating people during the war, St. Joe was a victim. He was interned, escaped internment, and “out of survival, built up this world in New Orleans where he could be the boss and be the king of that world.” His character offers poor people an escape through the crime that he sells.

The Future is Real
Oh, and that hologram technology seen in the trailer? Apparently that’s real. Newton said it’s a “new piece of technology that was innovated for this project,” and she described it as almost an “art installation” – but one where the actors “could literally use the technology as they were acting.” Jackman expressed his own wonder at seeing that tech in action, saying that when he first saw it, “it broke my heart that audiences might not believe that this is real.”

And again, be sure to keep an ear out for Djawadi’s score. “We play with noir tropes in it, but I want it to be really updated – I wanted it to reflect the kind of swagger that Nick Bannister has,” Joy explained, mentioning that clues are seeded within the music.

As to exactly how far into the future this movie is supposed to take place, Joy wouldn’t go on the record. “I don’t actually say explicitly what year in the future it is, and that was really intentional for me because the future is catching up to us so quickly, she said. “I didn’t want it to feel like sci-fi set indefinitely far away. I wanted this to be really relatable and really present…I wanted the colors to be warm-hued instead of those cool lights.” She wrote this script in 2018, but themes like rising waters and the wealth disparity in America have only become more relevant since then. But filtering the story through a sci-fi lens was very important to her.

“Science fiction is metaphor on a grand scale for the things that we are experiencing in this world – for the tremors we feel underneath our feet that we know are going to become quakes at any moment.”

Reminiscence arrives in theaters and will be available on HBO Max on August 20, 2021.

Btw, the reference as to when she was supposed to have written the script as 2018 is not correct. Unless that was when she rewrote the script ready for filming and full casting - because there have been character changes from the original script which made it to the 2013 Black List.

This is important given how disappointed people were that BAD EDUCATION, despite its critical raves, did not qualify for Oscar consideration.

Rules and regulations for the 94th annual Oscars have been approved by the AMPAS board of governors and were released Wednesday morning. As previously announced, most of the pandemic-related changes instituted last year — including loosening requirements of eligibility for streaming and VOD movies — will remain intact for the shortened 2021 year, which includes films released between March 1-December 31, 2021.

The Academy again reemphasizes it intends to address the whole issue of eligibility and qualifying requirements and possible expansion for the 95th awards at a later date.

For films that open in theaters, the six qualifying U.S. metropolitan areas are Los Angeles County, the City of New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta, and apply to General Entry categories as well as the Documentary and Short Film categories.


DGA Awards Reinstate Theatrical First-Run Rule For Best Picture Category, Set 2022 Date

AMPAS requirements differ from the Directors Guild of America, which Tuesday said its DGA Awards are returning to a requirement of first having a seven-day theatrical run (that means in theatres) in advance of exhibition in any other form (streaming, VOD, etc.) in order to be eligible to compete for their top directing honors in motion pictures. The DGA, sticking to the same 10-month period as Oscars and other 2021 awards, did make an exception for films already released between March 1-June 15. All others going forward must comply with the theatrical requirement.


The Oscars, on the other hand is fine once again for this year with a day-and-date release, or strictly on the other approved platforms, since it believes exhibition remains significantly impacted by the pandemic.


Also as previously announced, the Oscars are returning to a set number of 10 nominees for Best Picture, rather than the recent rule that between five and 10 films could be nominated depending on vote totals. This is clearly in hopes of getting more popular crowd-pleasers in contention and hopefully helping dwindling ratings that hit an all-time low for the April 25 Oscarcast on ABC (admittedly severely impacted by Covid considerations and theaters being closed all year for the most part). By the way, although not mentioned in today’s release or in the actual rules document, the Academy Inclusion Standards form kicks into action with the 94th Oscars and will be required as part of the submissions process, but still not go into actual working effect until the 96th awards. This of course is all about meeting certain standards of diversity in the actual making of Best Picture contenders.

Tweaks to the rules also include a significant change in the Music branch, where now only 35% of total music in a film is necessary to be eligible, down from 60%. Also, for Original Song, no more than five tunes from a single film can now be entered for consideration. For the Sound award, which last year was reduced from two to one category combining mixing and editing, there will now be a preliminary round of voting to get a shortlist of 10 films, along with a bakeoff-style presentation similar to that used in some other branches.

The Academy board also agreed to expand the shortlist of contenders for Documentary Short, Animated Short and Live Action Short from 10 to 15 films.

Original Song – Monday, November 1, 2021
General Entry categories – Monday, November 15, 2021

Campaign regulations, which specify how companies and individuals may market to Academy members any movies and achievements eligible for the 94th Academy Awards, were also updated. As a reminder, the mailings of DVDs, CDs and physical screenplays are discontinued starting this year. ccess to the Academy Screening Room will continue to be made available for all eligible releases. It looks like that for the Oscars - REMINISCENCE will be eligible for Oscar consideration.

On the other hand, directors of films released by Warner Bros from June 16 (which will include Lisa Joy and Denis Villeneuve for DUNE) will not qualify for the prestigious DGA award.

Will Warner Bros change its policy of same date release in theaters and streaming?
