Reprinting that part of the Lisa Joy Deadline interview in early 2019 where she talks about why she cast Hugh Jackman for the movie --

All the years I was writing this, I would see the scenes fully in my mind and I was directing it and planning the set pieces and drawing the artwork for the world. The one person who was always in my mind, from the first day, was Hugh Jackman. It’s this crazy love story and it’s totally unreal to me. I drew his costume on him, I have all these sketches and I thought, it has to be him. This is a man who, whatever character he inhabits, whether it’s in Prisoners, or The Greatest Showman, he has a range that’s like that of a character actor. You always believe his characters. He has so much heart. Even if he’s playing a flawed character. You can just see that heart underneath that and you forgive him because you see in his flaws, your own.


Then you couple that with, my God, he’s Wolverine. The most charismatic, handsomest movie star. The idea he’s all those things combined, with the sensitivity and the action, the sheer physicality to pull off this physically demanding role. He was all I could picture. I didn’t talk to anyone else. I sent him an email and went out to meet him and we talked about the script. I stayed so long, they were like, you want to have dinner here? We were in his living room that long. I decided to leave him to dinner with his family and not encroach anymore. It was an instant connection in that way. He totally viscerally understood and inhabited that character.

I just recorded some voiceover with him and it was so moving to see him say these words that I’d imagined in my head so long. The life he brought to them was even better and more nuanced than I had imagined. That’s my lead.

And this is Lisa Joy with husband Jonathan Nolan.




Lisa is Eurasian ( half-Chinese) and was a consultant (she has a Law degree from Harvard) before she turned to filmmaking. Jonathan is the brother of Chris Nolan with whom he has collaborated on some film scripts. One of them is THE PRESTIGE, whose screenplay was adapted by the Nolan brothers. The husband and wife team first collaborated in the TV series WESTWORLD.

The Cannes Filmfest -- the most famous of all the film festivals -- is moving its usual May date to July.

This will put it within 2 months of the oldest filmfest ( Venice - Sept 1) and likely, Toronto filmfest as well. There is also the small but very prestigious Telluride which usually opens before Toronto. The other top 3 European filmfests, the Berlinale will hold a 2nd in-person festival in June.


Will REMINISCENCE get a chance to be premiered in any or sometimes 2 ( One European and One in North America) filmfests? The scale of the movie seems to invite that kind of attention ( a wide range of audiences).

Several Hugh movies have featured in filmfests ( some simply for exhibition, others for competition). Bad Education ( Toronto), The FrontRunner (Telluride), Logan(Berlinale), Eddie The Eagle ( Sundance), Prisoners ( Toronto), XMen:TheLastStand (Cannes) andThe Fountain ( Venice).

Also, the theme of climate change impact in the movie may lend itself to broader audience attention.

Can Nick Bannister be more fiercely in love with his lady than Tommy's passionate and hopeless devotion to Izzy?

Hugh has such a dramatic persona on screen that he can portray such obssesion with credibility and resonance with audiences!

What’s the status of Reminiscence?

JACKMAN: We finished filming, and they’re editing now. I don’t know exactly what they’re doing, but I guess (writer/director) Lisa [Joy] is probably editing at home. We finished filming, at the end of January. I’m really excited for that film. I loved doing it. I think Lisa is an incredible talent. I said yes to the movie, in my head. I didn’t say this to her because, you’ve gotta be cool, but she pitched me the movie. She said, “I’m gonna pitch it before you’ve read the script because I want you to understand the world of the film.” As she’s pitching, I’m like, “I’m doing this movie.” And then, I was reading the script, and 20 minutes into the script, I was like, “Honestly, I don’t even need to read this. I’m doing it.” It was that good and that exciting and that original, and I think audiences are really craving that. I’ve been part of a movie franchise, where I played the same character nine times. It’s important that I do some original content.



It sounds like a really cool sci-fi thriller, and to know that it’s original, what most impressed you about what Lisa Joy was able to create on set and about working with her?

JACKMAN: She’s like a savant, in the way that she prepares. She knows every cut and every angle. When she walks on the set, she has this preparation that you’ve never seen before, and a knowledge of how things are gonna go down, and because of that, which goes back to what you were saying about preparation, she has the ability to take on active suggestions. It feels like you’re really creating and flowing, but you have this foundation where you know you’re gonna make your day and you know you’re gonna create some things that have never been done before. And we were doing things in camera that have never been done before, but she had prepped it all. It was super exciting to be part of that. She’s just got an incredible brain. She never loses her temper. She always is laughing and having a good time. This was a really big film, and I was just proud to be part of it.



Does it also feel like a very different kind of character for you?

JACKMAN: Yeah, it does, and a different genre character than anything I’ve done. This puts me more in the Bogart world. It’s very much a film noir romance. Coming off of doing Frank, Gary Hart and The Greatest Showman, it’s been a really interesting time for me, and I’m really loving having the variety of characters that I’ve been offered and am lucky enough to do, but this does feel very different. And I got to work with Rebecca Ferguson again, who I think is ridiculously talented and amazing, and I love her. I had never met Thandie Newton before, but I now am equally as impressed with her.

The script was decent, from the footage I saw it looks good as well. Uses one of Tony Scott’s old DPs and at the very least it will have interesting VFX lol. Probably a very middling project. Nice world building tho.

DP means Director of Photography, I think.

DP for the movie is Paul Cameron, who has done work for Westworld ( the Lisa Joy/Jonathan Nolan connection). He has extensive cinematography background including some large scale movies --

"Middling project" - probably because it has only a $ 70 million budget ( or thereabouts), which is not so big for a sci-fi movie. However based on the script, there isn't that much sci-fi except for the supposed underwater locale ( partly flooded Miami in a futuristic setting) and the methodology Bannister uses for his livelihood/business.

I think what will elevate this movie towards major interest will be Hugh Jackman and how he gives it a strong film noir action thriller vibe coupled with the passionate romance he is involved in. I think male audiences will be attracted by the action/thriller aspect and the bit of sci-fi. Women will likely be more involved with the romantic angle, as portrayed by 2 actors with strong chemistry ( especially after their Greatest Showman acting).

Of course, how it will be promoted will also work a lot - ads and media tour.

Just my guess.

Notice anything different with how he speaks in the two separate scenes?

I will not give a hint ( I have an idea, having read a first draft of the script) as some may look at the change as a SPOILER...but it is interesting that they juxtaposed these 2 scenes one after another.

Is this an OFFICIAL teaser from WarnerBros and HBO-MAX?

Or did someone simply pick up the images and sound from the HBO-MAX teaser/trailer released earlier on their upcoming slate for the rest of the year?





Nothing much new ( we have seen the images) - but maybe this is a forerunner of a full trailer?

The newly-announced NY PopsUp Festival will include the Tribeca Film Festival as a culminating event.

NY PopsUp will reach its apex over the summer, as we celebrate both the 20th Anniversary of the Tribeca Film Festival (June 9 through 20) and the opening of one of New York's most highly anticipated projects: Little Island (June)

Depending on when WarnerBros will release REMINISCENCE in theatres and HBO-MAX, is there a chance that it might premiere earlier than the fall festival circuit?

Such as the New York-based Tribeca filmfest which is celeberating its 20th year in June 2021?
