Btw, at the stagedoor of the Winter Garden, when I wished Hugh GOOD LUCK for THE SON -- this was the gesture he made. Maybe he is hoping for the best for his new movie.

She probably based her comments on the play ( which has been published). The play was staged in London and won raves both for the actors playing Peter and Nicholas. It was also staged in Singapore where it won a Best Actor award for the actor who played Peter.
I have read the play and it is meant for a stage production. It could be changed to suit a cinematic audience better. For one, I do not remember how New York is made the major setting, what happened in southern France and what role will Anthony Hopkins ( relatively small, according to reports) play in the movie.
The issue is how Florian Zeller has adapted the play for the screen and if the roles have been rewritten?
Also, based on my reading of the play, I do not agree that the role of the present wife is more attention-getting than the role of the ex-wife. The role of the present wife seemed quite passive to me.
Btw, there has been some news/speculations that the release of Aronofsky's THE WHALE may be postponed to next year?
On Gold Derby, the major competition is currently focused on Colman Domingo's role in RUSTIN ( the story of a black gay rights activist) and may be the actor on the Lurhmann Elvis movie?

It looks like Sony/international distributors are now putting together the release strategy for THE SON.
We know that it will be released sometime in 2022 in the USA to meet the Oscar deadline. I think it will also be released within 2022 to make the BAFTA deadline (THE FATHER was successful there).
I just saw this tweet - presumably a French site :
It will be released in early March, 2023.
Why that date? I think Zeller & Sony / other distributors are very confident of Oscar glory ( Oscars are in late February 2023) and they will harvest any goodwill the movie is expected to get by award wins!
This was the strategy for La La Land (which turned up unexpected box office numbers) and even The Father and they benefited from the windfall.
To me, this sounds like a vote of confidence!
Interesting, given that Florian Zeller is a celebrated playwright in his native France!

Nothing to do with THE SON, but Hugh seems like a big fan of Anthony Hopkins!

Potential competition for THE SON, Spielberg's THE FABELMANS, will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival --
No strong competition for Best Actor ( all classified as Supporting Actors) for the movie, based on current Gold Derby predictions.

Oops - there is speculation that THE SON will not be in Venice but will hold its world premiere at TELLURIDE and then go to TORONTO!
Jeffrey Wells picks his sources of speculations --
I wonder if Zeller was not amenable to the Venice Festival requirements. As late as the other day (July 21), Hollywood Reporter predicted that The Son will be in Venice.
But later on, I saw one film festival predictor site omitting The Son from the lineup when it used to be there.
We will know soon enough - by July 26, 2022.
Telluride is the critics and movie press favorite festival because they usually opt for top quality and it is very hard to be able to exhibit there.
Toronto has the biggest audience of film festival goers. No awards given but audiences are asked to vote for their favorites. Prisoners won 2nd place in 2013.
Lately, Venice became a predictor of potential Oscars winners.

TELLURIDEWhere there is speculation that THE SON will hold its world premiere there! www.telluridefilmfestival.org/show/passesThe 49th Festival will be held from September 2 to 5, 2022! There are many slots showing TBA ( To Be Announced) Boxes for Sept 5, presumably intended for new movies? telluridecms-production.s3.amazonaws.com/assets/pdfs/48th-TFF-program-guide-FINAL-2.pdfHugh has performances for The Music Man from Sept 2-4, 2022. He can fly to Telluride if there are night flights on Sept 4. Hugh takes a leave from Sept 5-12, 2022 TORONTO Where there is speculation that THE SON will hold a screening! The festival will be held from September 8 to 18, 2022. VENICEThe festival will be held between August 31 to Sept 10, 2022. It looks like there will be difficulties arranging for Hugh to be present in Venice, Telluride (Colorado) and Toronto. He will be available only from Sept 5 (Monday). Telluride ends on that day. If he flies there, he can fly to Venice, Italy the following day or when The Son can be scheduled. Assuming they also want to go to Toronto, there is much leeway here because Toronto will end only on Sept 18. Hugh is available only from Sept 5 to Sept 12. Maybe the logistics is not practical to try screening in all three festivals. Sony is the sponsor studio ( with Tom Rothman). Will he allow such a promotion budget for an indie movie? But the real stumbling block is the premiere status requirement! Venice requires that the movie has not been shown in any public screening (no international premiere anywhere). Telluride only requires that it has not been shown in a North American premiere. If they have to choose between the 2 - rumor is they will have the world premiere in Telluride. Little is known about Telluride. But of all the major filmfests -- it is the most respected and considered top of the class, art-wise, by film critics and media. Jo

The Fabelmans (leading Gold Derby for Oscar Best Picture) which is actually a semi-biographical film about Steven Spielberg, is going to Toronto. Jeff Wells observes it is "not a Telluride-type" of film but may appeal more with the younger Toronto audience ( may try for the Audience Award...Prisoners placed 2nd in that poll).
Telluride will be the prestige type of movies??

Not yet officially confirmed at the official website, La Biennale de Venezia, but film sites are publishing thatTHE SON will hold its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival!Translated by GOOGLE-- Btw, for the first time in the history of the AMPAS and the Venice Film Festival, the newly-elected officials of the Board of Governors of the AMPAS are attending the Biennale and are holding discussions with other key filmmakers and festival officials. This may be one of the key points that swung the decision by Sony and Zeller to present the movie's world premiere at the Lido (Venice). Btw, Jason Reitman ( The Front Runner) is a member of the new Board but I am not sure if he will be part of the delegation to Venice.

If this is true -- August 31, 2022 is a 2-DAY performance date for The Music Man! www.telecharge.com/Broadway/The-Music-Man/TicketProceed to August 2022 calendar. Calling on Max -- time to be Harold Hill again Btw, there is no conflict with holding screenings at Telluride ( only restriction is that it has not been shown in a North American market). What about Toronto?Jo

Not yet officially confirmed at the official website, La Biennale de Venezia, but film sites are publishing thatTHE SON will hold its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival!Translated by GOOGLE-- No need to fret about Max Clayton. The automatic Twitter translator was apparently confounded by a typo in the Portuguese. If you translate just the words "que acontece a partir de 31 de Agosto.", the meaning is "which takes place from the 31st of August." It's saying the FESTIVAL starts on that date, not that the film will be screened on that date.

I am waiting for tonight (here) - 11:00 am in Venice to get the official announcement. The only thing confirmed for August 31 is the film that will open the festival ( shown on the website), Noah Baumbach's WHITE NOISE ( starring Adam Driver). But Erik Anderson of Awards Watch is having fun by the slip of the tongue of the Festival Director ( about Laura & Vanessa being confirmed to attend). We'll see PS: I am hoping though that if THE SON gets any screening schedule, that it be close to August 31. The AMPAS delegation ( the new president of the Board of Governors and others) are attending Opening Night. I am hopeful they can stay long enough to see THE SON and be able to give the movie some good feeback to other AMPAS members? Jo

Why is Venice important - because the festival is considered one of the early harbingers of the awards season, primarily the Oscars. Given how Hugh Jackman is, at the moment, the leading Oscar contender at Gold Derby, it is curious to know if the early reactions at Venice will validate that sentiment to a great extent. Hopefully, it does! Re scheduling -- the problem is Telluride has a very short screening schedule...and Venice will have to schedule ahead of that time frame for The Son. Because Venice requires that it is a world premiere site, The Son will have to screen ahead of any Telluride plans ( if any). Lol - why am I trying to fix the schedule of THE SON? Just excited - for all I know - it will all go awry Jo
