Hugh has said that he was interested when he was asked a few times to return but schedule-wise he could not work it out.
He was very busy in 2012 ( he was filming Prisoners while campaigning for his LesMis effort), in 2016 ( he had the finale workshop for TGS in February...and he was simultaneously preparing ( he was involved in pre-prod) for the filming of Logan, which was to take place a few months later. In 2017 - he was doing major promo for Logan (which premiered at the Berlinale in mid February, but was released wide on March 3). He was also still filming TGS at that time. In 2015 ( was that when he was in Eddie The Eagle) - he was doing major promo for that movie ( the fighter plane experience, the football field clip, the many appearances in Europe and some in the USA), including a surprise premiere at Sundance Film Festival ( February?)… I don't know if those were some of the years he was invited back... but it seems there were quite a bit of work pressure which coincided with the preparations for the Oscars. Also, prior to the finale workshop, he was heavily involved in the development of the musical score for TGS by testing the music every now and then ( see the Special Features on The Songs on BluRay edition). He was also looking at musicals/plays for his return to the stage possibly within the same time frames. He was in Back on Broadway in late 2011/early 2012 and in The River in the same time frame in 2014/2016)…
So, it was very likely he was quite busy at the time he may have been asked to host the Oscars again.

After Hugh, of course, my favorite Oscar hosts are Johnny Carson (OK, more than 30 years ago) and Billy Crystal. Yes, I love all that old-time shtick.

Very insightful comment - re the love for movies oozing out from the performance!
These days, the movies are viewed by some as more of vehicles to express social or cultural issues... and only occasionally focused on entertaining or absorbing story-telling!

The Oscars are this weekend! Here's a look back on the decision to invite Hugh Jackman to host the Oscars -- www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2008-dec-13-et-hughbig13-story.html*Little did Larry Mark know that Hugh would be regarded as one of the best, if not the best, Oscars hosts ever! The clip of the 2009 Oscars opening number is still viewed up to this day on YouTube ( 17.4 million hits to-date). Little did he know that the famous Opening Number would win an EMMY for its writers. And had the EMMYs not dropped the award for Host of Special Events, it was very likely that Hugh would have won an EMMY for his hosting duties as well! *Little did Larry Mark know that while watching Hugh in rehearsals for the 2009 Oscars that it would give him an idea for a joint project on a future biomusical featuring PTBarnum. He did suggest it to Hugh and they would collaborate for the next 8 years on a movie musical that will defy box office records and recording albums charts worldwide. It is up to now a well-loved musical called THE GREATEST SHOWMAN! Not such a bad decision to invite Hugh Jackman to host the Oscars, eh Mr Mark Jo

The Oscar winner for COSTUME DESIGN ( for LITTLE WOMEN), Jacqueline Duran, also designed the Costumes for PAN.

Is it just Jackman fans simply being jealous ?
But the tweeter has a point -- that the storyline of LOGAN gave us a real & dramatic story and characterization... and that ultimately it is a story of redemption!

Major decline ( 20% fall from previous year, with an even worse 31% decline in the desired demos) for Oscar viewing numbers! collider.com/2020-oscars-ratings/Maybe if they omitted the Red Carpet part ( or edit it) - people would not be so tired watching TV for one event for so long! It's nothing but a fashion show with mostly inane questions being asked by the media. Also, the host-less ceremonies felt rudder-less - per many social media comments. Why try to make it a spectacle when it is supposed to be an event honoring the best of films? Putting in pop stars has no relevance -- do they think those who tuned in to watch them would stay - their interest may not be on movies? Jo

Interestingly, here are candid comments from a REDDIT conversation on the topic -- https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/f1uxf8/oscars_ratings_hit_alltime_low/ And another point of view - from Deadline.com Had it been Kirk Douglas's time, the Oscars would have featured "Hollywood" and "its actors" and "in a big way"! "Most of all he would have liked an Oscar show that featured Hollywood." deadline.com/2020/02/2020-oscars-hollywood-kirk-douglas-parasite-1202856412/

Was this the rehearsal which Larry Mark and Bill Condon were both watching and which led to Larry Mark pitching the idea of a Barnum musical biopic to Hugh? Or was it the rehearsals for the Opening number? Could be! Because the top hat is more symbolic of the circus than what he did for the much applauded opening number...and must have also triggered suggestions of a circus movie? Jo

I could not reprint the above article from Vulture then ( BEHIND-THE-SCENES story on the 2009 Oscars Opening Number) -- but this time, I was able to reproduce it. Fairly lengthy but very interesting and amusing.
The writers were surprised by some of Hugh's reactions/initiatives when they were putting the act together. They were not too aware that Hugh is a theatre performer, where he thinks nothing of breaking the 4th wall to liven up the show. Also, being theatre-trained, Hugh is adept at improvisations...and together with his triple-threat talent... would ensure that the show would be very good. People also remember that it was not just his singing and dancing talent which were shown here -- his ability to deliver the lines and sing the songs the way he did... was because his triple threat talent includes his ACTING talent.
Hugh should have won an EMMY for hosting - but that was the year when the EMMYs stopped giving an award for hosting a special event show. The writers won for WRITING. But if Hugh had not delivered it perfectly, maybe that writers award would not have been given?
To this day, people still watch the Opening Number from 2009! Close to 20 million clicks to-date. And do read the comments!
No offense meant -- but the Opening Number did outclass ( or at least win the Dolby and TV audience's hearts) the elaborate Luhrmann spectacle called The Musical Is Back!

Scott Feinberg is a longtime Oscar forecaster. He is currently doing the Oscar forecasting for The Hollywood Reporter.

HA!
Scott Feinberg liked your reply
HughJackman totally deserved the ensuing standing ovation. Rare to find an actor/performer w/ such skills -film&theatre. Maybe @theacademy shouldn't take too long to recognize his talent and complete his EGOT? Hollywood will lose him in the near future to B'way in @musicmanbway
Hope he helps push Hugh's chances for REMINISCENCE!
